Which is a better place to pursue MPH: Manipal University or IIPH?

NS
Nishtha Sharma Posted On : July 28th, 2021
B.V.Sc & A.H. from G.B Pant University of Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand (2018)

My sister is pursuing MPH from IIPH and the University of Hyderabad. She is going to graduate in April of 2022. MPH in both Manipal and IIPH is structured in the same manner.

Here are the advantages of IIPH though:

  • IIPH has is a public health organization and it aims towards public health only.
  • Most of the IIPH professors are serving as guest faculty of Manipal too. You can assume the quality of education these professors offer.
  • IIPH courses are cost-effective too when you compare them to Manipal's.
  • You will discover brilliant Faculty members at IIPH like the esteemed epidemiologist Dr. Raghupathy Achla; Dr. Rajan Shukla of Health Policy and Dr. Nand Kishore Kannuri.
  • If you compare IIPH's faculty with any other institute's, then only TISS gets the upper hand.

As for working abroad, there are good chances but if you plan to work for India, then be aware of the ground realities because it's very different. The placement rate is about 80% but if you have the requisite skills then you should not worry at all.

Here are some important points to consider if you are going to choose JIPMER for your MPH:

  1. INR 12,000 is the course fee for each year and the admission fee is INR 3000. The total fee comes to INR 14,910 for the first year and INR 8,760 for the second year. The fee is quite affordable, especially when compared with other private institutions in India.
  2. The course duration is 2 years. In the first year, the candidates have to involve in core research- Epidemiology and Biostatistics (quantitative/qualitative),

National Health Programs, and Health Management. The second year includes the advancement of all the first-year subjects. The subject of Health Promotion is also studied in the second year. There is no focus area or specialized study.

  1. Health Economics is taught superficially, and candidates may encounter problems in its application part
  2. The faculty of MPH at JIPMER is one of the best in the country and the professors have an in-depth knowledge of their field. The students are guided in every possible way
  3. The campus is good and the classrooms are air-conditioned. Pondicherry is a beautiful and peaceful place
  4. There is no fully functional placement cell in place in JIPMER.  IIHMR, TISS, and PGIMER have a fully dedicated placement cell
  5. JIPMER has a dedicated building for the School of Public Health

Studied MPH at MIT-WPU (2018)

Unlike Other Social Science Programs, an MPH degree offers a theoretical foundation with field exposure towards practical aspects of health and well being. The program develops understanding among students about the need for understanding health from a non-medical perspective to address complex social determinants of health. The study focuses on the experiential, facilitative and case study method of learning whereby the students have an opportunity to experience a participative mode of learning.
