How is IIT Ropar?
I am a student at IIT Ropar and thus I am qualified to answer this question-
- Location- Ropar is just an hour’s drive from Chandigarh. It is well-connected to major cities like Jalandhar, Shimla, Delhi, and Chandigarh. The Tricity area is
quite developed and Mohali has its international airport. Ropar itself is a very calm and peaceful city. The campus is located at the foothills of Shivalik on the banks of the Sutlej River.
- Academics- The academics at IIT Ropar is at par with the old IITs, but it has been designed by experts to lay greater emphasis on practical learning and labs than the old IITs. One of the major highlights of the IIT Ropar curriculum is the provision of allowing Minors, Honors or Concentration alongside the main B.Tech degree. This provision is not present in the old IITs. An example is that you can do a B.Tech in Mechanical with a Minor in CS.
- Faculty- The faculty at IIT Ropar is well qualified and the selection procedure is at par with the old IITs. The professors are alums of IITs and other institutions in the US. The teacher-student ratio is 1:10, which is quite good. IIT Ropar organizes workshops, guest lectures by experienced professors from prestigious institutions.
In terms of research citations, IIT Ropar ranks higher than most IITs, including the old ones.
- Placements- For 2023 B.Tech placements, the highest package stood at INR 55 LPA for CSE, 55 LPA for Electrical, and 42 LPA for Mechanical. Core companies visit less for placements in comparison to non core companies. Google, Amazon and Ericsson were the top recruiters for the 2023 B.Tech placements.
- Campus and Student Life- IIT Ropar now has its own permanent campus with state-of-the-art infrastructure. The Lecture Halls, Hostels (both boys and girls), Dining Hall, Utility Block, and Sports fields are all newly built. The campus is beautiful and spread across 500 acres. Student life is eventful and there are numerous clubs and societies through which you can enhance your personality.
I chose IIT Ropar Electrical branch over mediocre branches at old IITs and CSE at newer ones. I am quite happy with my decision and do not regret it in the least.
How did IIT Ropar suddenly beat the top 7 IITs and came to the first position?
The former Director of IIT Ropar, Mr. SK Das is very visionary. Sir had hired during his time, very qualified faculty for IIT Ropar. In this institution, the student-teacher ratio 9:1 is appropriate for a healthy teaching environment and ample class interaction. Also, the research facilities and focus on research is truly unbeatable.
IIT Ropar has signed numerous MoUs with foreign universities for faculty, research collaboration, and student exchange. It has a state-of-the-art infrastructure.
The older IITs have a strong alumni network, however, that is not taken into consideration for rankings.
There are numerous rankings and each uses different parameters to rank institutions. One should be accepted if a newer institution ranks higher than an old established one.
The older IITs are mentors to the newer ones and thus, the success of IIT Ropar should be celebrated as an achievement for all.
How is the new IIT Ropar permanent campus?
Some of my friends are studying at IIT Ropar. According to them, the location used to be an ancient Harappan civilization site. This became the major influence of the infrastructure. Here are some things that make it stand out among others.
- Each department has its own lecture halls, faculty offices, labs, and seminar halls.
- The lecture hall has a seating capacity of around 150 students.
- The labs of the CSE department are open 24/7.
- Currently, the campus has 4 boys and 1 girls hostel and the campus is fully residential. Each hostel has a common room with a table tennis table, a reading room, and a gym.
- 1st and 2nd-year students get a double occupancy room while all others get a single occupancy room.
- Sports facilities on campus include a badminton court, a football, a cricket, and a hockey ground.
- The campus also has an auditorium of around 850 people seating capacity and a central library.
- IIT Ropar hosts an annual cultural festival called Zeitgeist which is considered one of the biggest college cultural festivals in the Punjab-Haryana region. It sees a footfall of around 15,000 people all across the country.
You will have the best four years of your life here and the permanent campus of IIT Ropar is a very good place to be.
What is the average package of the IIT Ropar CSE? Is it a good choice at an AIR of 2145 in the JEE Advanced?

However, judging an institute's worth on the basis of its placements is a wise thing to do. It's best to analyze your own preferences and also consider going through the course structure of the courses.
Coming to the second part of your question, yes, IIT Ropar CSE is a great option for those at the mentioned rank. The department has a highly learned faculty and provides a plethora of opportunities to its students. So go for it!
What was your experience in placement season at IIT Ropar?
I am sharing the collective experiences of those who have witnessed IIT Ropar placements over the last few years. IIT Ropar, like any other institute, offers internship opportunities on the basis of your CGPA score but for placements, CGPA is just a cut-off criterion. Candidates are evaluated on a number of parameters by the companies that visit for placements. Some of them are
- Analytical Abilities
- Practical skills acquired
- Behavior and attitude
Moreover, IT giants like Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Paypal give the least preference to your CGPA. I asked my friends what they learn from their interview experiences and these are the inferences
- "Positive Behavior and Attitude" is very important.
- Before appearing for an interview with your dream company always give lots of mock interviews or interviews in companies you are least interested
- Adopt a ‘Come what may" preparation in your core area and you will procure the maximum benefits.
- Apart from preparing technically, it's very important to work on your communication skills.
- Adopt confidence and calm countenance, it will help you during strenuous situations.
Interviews are generally very unpredictable. So if you fail to crack a particular company, let that take the better of you. Your talents and persistence matter more than anything. Don’t let interviews be the only determining criteria of your worth!
Which one is better, IIT Ropar or Thapar University?
It’s beyond my understanding why you would consider joining Thapar University when you have such a good option of IIT Ropar to choose from. I can say with certainty that IIT Ropar is a much better choice than Thapar University. IIT Ropar is considered among the top 3 IITs among the ones that are newly established,
- IIT Ropar has a high cutoff and accepts only the top JEE rankers so the quality of the crowd is not compensated. Thapar does not attract a very good crowd and has many average students as well thus bringing down the quality of the institute.
- Addressing the elephant in the room, even the placement scenario at IIT Ropar is better than Thapar University. Thapar University's average package 2022 stood at INR 10.97 LPA while IIT Ropar's average package 2022 stood at INR 28.54 LPA.
- IIT Ropar is well-known for its cutting-edge research and has a top-notch research facility. It also has many MoUs and ties with foreign universities and organizations.
- The exposure offered here is great and every year many students go for internships, jobs, and studies in foreign universities.
- The faculty pool comprises highly experienced professors that are Ph.D. holders from top overseas universities.
Overall, IIT Ropar is definitely better than Thapar University and you shouldn’t have any second thoughts.
Which one is better, IIT Ropar or Thapar University?
Both the institutes hold their own importance and cannot be compared as both are reputed colleges and the only thing that sets them apart is the term ‘IIT’. Having known some people studying in both these institutes, I can say that IIT Ropar is much better than Thapar.
- IIT Ropar has been ranked in the top 3 among new IITs for the past 2 years.
- IIT Ropar would give you a greater opportunity and a better peer group since the students studying here have secured a rank under 5000 in JEE Advanced.
- The placement status of IIT Ropar is amazing. The percentage in the CSE department has been more than 90% with an average of around 16 LPA.
- Mechanical and electrical remain around 80-85% with an average of around 8-9 LPA in mechanical and 12 LPA in electrical.
- Also, IIT Ropar has enormous research labs compared to any other new IIT. And also, it has deep collaboration with foreign universities.
- The students going for internships, jobs, and studies in foreign universities are relatively high at IIT Ropar as compared to any other new IIT.
- The faculty in IIT Ropar is qualified well enough. Most of them are done with their Ph.D. from top Universities across the world.

IIT Ropar beats even the other IITs in terms of infrastructure, faculty, and placements. And hence, Private Universities are no parallel to IIT Ropar.
What is the position of IIT Ropar among other IITs?
IIT Ropar started in the year 2008 and since then it has shown tremendous growth. Among its contemporaries, IIT Ropar lags behind only IIT Indore and IIT Hyderabad. Here are the different aspects on which it is performing extremely well:
- Faculty- The professors are a little strict, but they are very learned at the same time. They teach really well. Make sure to be attentive during the lectures.
- Curriculum and Labs- The curriculum and labs are both up to date and are improving further with time. The labs are well equipped and the lab staff is very supportive.
- Seniors- The seniors are very helpful and put in a lot of effort for cultural and academic activities.
- Placements- The placement scenario is quite promising. For the B.Tech students during 2023 placements, the highest salary stood at INR 55 LPA ( for CSE and EE branches). The average salary stood at INR 22.49 LPA and the median salary stood at INR 16.62 LPA. 80.85% of students were placed in the B.Tech courses during placements.
- Major/Minor- At IIT Ropar, you will get the choice of selecting a minor alongside your major. If for example, you are studying Electrical Engineering, you can choose CSE as your minor to also study CSE courses alongside.
- Students- You will find some of India’s best brains in every field over here. The competitive spirit and coding culture are great in this institution.
- NIRF Rankings- IIT Ropar (Rupnagar) stands at the 22nd spot in the NIRF India Rankings 2023 for Engineering colleges category. It stands at the 33rd spot in the NIRF 2023 Rankings for the overall category.
Thus, IIT Ropar is doing quite well as an IIT and is showing continuous and rapid growth.
Who are some of the best professors at IIT Ropar?
As some of my friends studied at IIT Ropar, and also after reading some reviews online, I can say that the best professor is Dr. Dhiraj K. Mahajan.
He values knowledge above marks and he takes his own open time exam for students to understand their potential.
He has guided 5-6 students personally for a year and with his efforts. He helped students in securing a job opportunity in Germany for international exposure.
Apart from him, here are some of the other good professors - Dr. Narayanan C. Krishnan, Dr. Nitin Auluck, Dr. Balwinder Sodhi, Dr. Deepti Bathula, Dr. Apoorva Mudgal, Dr. Yashveer Singh, and Dr. M. Prabhakar.
Which one's better for mechanical/electrical engineering, IIT Ropar or IIT Bhubaneswar?
According to media reports, the highest package offered during IIT Ropar placements was INR 50 LPA. Previously, the median package offered during IIT Ropar BTech placements 2021 was INR 12.4 LPA, according to the IIT Ropar NIRF report 2022. Furthermore, the placement rate for IIT Ropar placements in 2021 was 74%. ISRO, DRDO, ONGC, Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum, Bharat Petroleum, Tata Steels, Tata Motors, General Motors, Larsen and Toubro, Indian Navy, Coal India, SAIL, Hyundai, and many others are previous mechanical department recruiters.
In terms of location, IIT Ropar is well-connected to cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Mohali, Shimla, Jalandhar, and almost all of northern India. It is close to Chandigarh, a well-developed city with an international airport.
It has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with foreign universities and formed collaborations with several industries and universities to promote the development of research at IIT Ropar. Ropar is a calm and peaceful location that provides a beautiful setting for an institute like IIT.
Many students from the electrical/mechanical department have been chosen for the GSoC. (Google Summer Of Code). The institute covers the entire cost of the student's projects. The hostels are fully managed by students and have separate labs for robotics, coding, and other purposes. Regular workshops and guest lectures by experienced professors from various prestigious institutes are organized by the institute. Regular industrial visits are held to give students appropriate exposure to a practical working environment.
According to data, the undergraduate placement rate exceeds 94%. A total of 293 B. Tech students were offered positions. Six students will receive the highest domestic CTC of 44.10 Lakhs per year.
The average salary for a B.Tech is 18.95 lakh per year, and an M.Tech salary is 10.34 lakh per year.
PSUs such as Oil India Limited, BEL, IOCL, GAIL, Tatagarh Wagon Ltd, and C-DAC took part in the campus placements.
