IIM Shillong was established in 2007 as the 7th Indian Institute of Management, located in the North-East region of India. The programs offered at this institute include postgraduate diplomas, executive diplomas, and doctoral programs. The admission process at IIM Shillong is similar to other IIMs, with applicants being evaluated based on their scores on exams such as the CAT, GMAT, GATE, and GRE. Candidates for doctoral programs are also shortlisted based on their performance in the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

Tier 1 MBA colleges in India are among the highest-ranked management institutes in the country, and many of their students secure positions at top companies. These colleges are highly competitive and have a strong brand value, which can be beneficial for students as they begin their careers. Although IIM Shillong is considered a tier 1 b-school, it does not rank among the top 10 in India. The top 10 tier 1 MBA colleges in India typically include IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, FMS Delhi, XLRI, IIM Kozhikode, SP Jain, Jamnalal Bajaj, and IIM Indore. Some people may also consider the Indian School of Business (ISB) to be a top tier 1 MBA college due to its one-year program.

Which IIM is better, IIM Shillong, IIM Ranchi or IIM Rohtak? Why?

HS

MBA from Indian Institute of Management Rohtak (2020)

Every MBA aspirant faces the duration of multiple converts which leaves him in a dilemma for choosing the right Institute. Several points need to be considered before choosing the right Institute.

  • Location: For MBA students, exposure is very crucial. IIM Rohtak being situated in NCR, has the location advantage of providing industrial exposure, thereby enabling students to learn and grow. Such a locational advantage also allows many eminent industry experts to visit the campus and conduct guest lectures which maximize exposure.
  • Peer: One of the major highlights of an MBA program is the social bonds you develop with your peers and seniors that stay with you throughout your career. IIM Rohtak has the best peer pool one could ask for.
  • Placements: Most of the new IIMs have similar placement statistics. But the uniqueness of IIM Rohtak lies in the fact that it is one of those very few colleges across the country, which follow IPRS standards and is audited by CRISIL, thus the authenticity of the report cannot be questioned.
  • Newly appointed director: The new director Prof Dheeraj Sharma has made fast-paced changes right from the beginning. He has sped up the construction work, hired new faculties, and launched a few new courses.
  • Infrastructure: The campus is large and enthralling spread across 650 acres MDU campus with facilities such as a sports complex, swimming pool, Bloomberg lab etc.
  • Extracurriculars: Yearly events and summits are held to keep the students active and immersed in various co-curricular activities.

Overall, the ambiance at IIM Rohtak is very promising and I would choose it over any new IIM.

MDI will be a better option for all specializations, except Operations. If you are interested in Operations, IIT Bombay is much better. MDI Gurgaon placements are excellent. Big names such as Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and BCG have visited the campus placements. The 2022 placement drive had an average CTC of INR 26.65 LPA.

MDI offers the best placement in the finance domain after IIM A, B, C, FMS, and XLRI. JP, HSBC, Nomura, Stanchart, etc. are some of the major recruiters from the finance sector.

MDI placement records for Marketing are good as well. HUL, Coke, Pepsi, and P&G are some significant recruiters from the marketing sector.

My sister received a call from IIM Shillong at 91.5 percentile, a few years back. But she had other things working for her like gender diversity, academic diversity, and a work experience of 2 years. Don’t lose hope, and prepare for the interview. If it doesn’t work, try again next year. But if the opportunity does knock on your door, be prepared to receive it. You can check out the basic overall and sectional cutoffs for CAT 2023 at IIM Shillong.

What is it like to be a student at IIM Shillong?

JT
Jayant Thakur Posted On : January 27th, 2023
Studied at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong

An average student's daily itinerary looks something like this:

8:00 am - You may find yourself regretting not getting enough sleep the night before. The sound of alarms fills the corridors as everyone wakes up. One person usually gets up first and makes sure the rest of the group is also up.

8:30 - Breakfast is not optional. The classes are tough and the weather is cold, so it's important to have energy. You'll probably eat Idlis, parathas, upma, or whatever else is on the menu for the day.

8:59 - You may find yourself running at top speed towards class, as the door closes at exactly 9:00 and the attendance sheet will have a sad blank space where your name should be. Attendance is very important in MBA colleges.

Each class is 1.5 hours long. There is a 15-minute break between classes, which is the perfect time to discuss college gossip, have a cup of tea, go through pre-reads, or work on PowerPoint presentations.

6:00 pm - By this time, you'll be exhausted and would probably give anything for a bed. Luckily, it's tea time, so you can forget your troubles for a little while and enjoy some snacks. The rest of the evening will be spent working on club committee tasks. There is always something that needs to be taken care of, whether it's an upcoming event or an article that needs to be written. However, most days you don't mind the work because it helps bring everyone together.

The "M" in MBA could stand for "meetings." There are so many of them - study group meetings, club meetings, competition meetings, and more. On the plus side, you get to know everyone very well.

By 12:00 am, you'll be tired but determined. The night canteen will help fuel you through the rest of the night. You'll have assignments to submit and pre-reads to get through. Many students use notebooks or apps to make to-do lists to stay organized. It's a great feeling to check off everything on your list.

On the weekends, things are a little more relaxed. You'll still have work to do, but you can choose your own pace. If you've worked hard during the week, the weekend is a good time to go on trips.

There will also be various events organized by the different clubs, such as Marketing, Operations, Finance, HR, and Environment. These clubs work hard to come up with fun and creative versions of concepts. Together, students make everything run smoothly. Committees help make your MBA experience as comfortable as possible. The Hostel Committee might organize surprise events like Sunday Biryani, while the Cultural Committee ensures that no festival goes uncelebrated. The Sports Committee also finds ways to engage even those who are not particularly interested in sports.

IIM Shillong is always buzzing with activity. Everyone is always busy doing something, and it is these little things that help make them the amazing managers they want to be. A day at IIM Shillong is filled with a sense of belonging and a longing to be in Shillong.

How good is IIM Shillong's PGPEX programme and how good are its placements?

RS
Rishabh Singh Posted On : February 12th, 2024
Lives in banglore

My brother received an interview call from IIM Shillong for their PGPEX program. This was a few years back. He wanted to join the course because he felt it would be beneficial for his corporate career. The teaching model at IIM Shillong focuses on developing Asian economies like China.

The PGPEX is comparatively affordable at IIM Shillong, compared to other management schools. But the top management schools host international teachers as visiting faculty for their courses.

Now here is the catch. The placements of IIM Shillong are entirely student driven. My brother reached out to a faculty member who was clear that the college offers its students a platform, but it can’t guarantee placements. During placements your entire profile will get you an offer, not just your ‘IIM Shillong’ tag.

After careful consideration, my brother decided to not opt for PGPEX at IIM Shillong.
