How is life at IIT Delhi? Is it tougher than the preparation days or easier?

SG
Sushmita Gupta Posted On : April 5th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Unlike everyone else, I think that life after joining IIT Delhi becomes more challenging than it was while preparing for JEE. Some reasons for the same are

  • Your peers are mostly JEE toppers and you will find an unexplainable competitive tension among your batchmates as everyone is struggling to remain at the top. The relative grading system makes it difficult to score more than 7 CGPA while the cutoff for most companies is 8-9. This leads to immense pressure and competition sometimes with a negative impact.
  • The hectic class schedule makes it impossible to spare time for extra activities like extracurricular activities, assignments, lab reports, and internship preparations.
  • The overall routine is quite imbalanced considering the academic pressure at one end and huge parties and entertainment during your leisure time. There is no time to relax and complete your sleep.
  • The students who target non-core jobs, focus less on academics and more on becoming dominant and attaining power. This creates a toxic political environment within the campus.
  • The workload for the CS branch is exceptionally high with no time left for extracurricular activities. The huge number of assignments keeps the students holed in the library for hours and they become frustrated.

Life at IIT Delhi is fast-paced, packed with challenges, and very lively so know what you have signed up for before joining!

Is it wise to leave IIT Delhi for CSE in IIIT Hyderabad?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 3rd, 2023

I am assuming that you got CSE at IIT Delhi. As per my research, for CSE, IIIT Hyderabad is at par with the top 5 IITs in this field (Madras, Delhi, Bombay, Kanpur, and Kharagpur). According to the three possibilities listed below, choose the right college for your B.Tech CSE-

  • You are passionate about CSE and care in the least for brand name and course fee- In this case, choose IIIT Hyderabad. Its coding culture is one of the best in India and is praised by even the IITians. The results of ACM-ICPC and GSoC selections from IIIT Hyderabad are a proof of the same.
  • You are not as passionate about CSE, and course fee and brand name are more important for you- In this case, choose one among the top 5 IITs because they have a smaller course fee for CSE and carry the IIT tag.
  • You love CSE but are also worried about the fee and brand name- In this case too, I would suggest you choose one among the top 5 IITs, not because of quality education, placements and research opportunities, all of which you will also get at IIIT H, but for the IIT tag.

As far as CSE placements are concerned, they are as good at IIIT H, as any IIT. At IIIT H, you are sure to get placed in a tech profile. A good number of tech companies visit the IIIT H campus for placements, at par with the top IITs.

Thus, based on your personal preference you can choose between IIT Delhi and IIIT Hyderabad for your CSE.

How's an MTech in industrial engineering from IIT Delhi?

KS
Kunal Sharma Posted On : April 5th, 2023
B.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

IIT Delhi M.Tech program in Industrial Engineering covers a wide range of topics such as statistics, probability, optimization, simulation, etc thus attracting more and more recruiters every year.

Of all the fields, a major part of the batch prefers Analytics mainly because of the packages offered and the kind of companies visiting for jobs related to Analytics. Analytics companies arrive way before supply chains and other companies and most students prefer going for Analytics only.

However, the IE branch has much better scope in other Institutes like NITIE, IITB, and IITK. IIT Delhi also isn’t very lacking and its placement statistics are a testament to the same.

Around 80% of the entire batch was placed this year with the major recruiters include

  • Accenture
  • Barclays Bank
  • Capgemini
  • Deloitte
  • Flipkart
  • Hindustan Unilever
  • ICICI
  • JP Morgan Chase

Coursework: The coursework lacks diversity in comparison to the IEOR at Bombay or IEM at Kanpur. But the best part is the rigorous projects part of the curriculum that begins right from the first year itself. These projects are based on real-life problems in society covering fields such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, and public policy while using modern programming tools such as Python, Matlab, Java, C, etc.

Some major courses offered in the program are

  • Probability and statistics
  • Linear and Non-linear optimization
  • Industrial Engineering Systems
  • Supply Chain Management
  • MPC (Maintenance Planning and Control)
  • Project Management
  • OPC (operations Planning and Control)
  • SMS (Stochastic Modeling and Simulation)
  • Value Engineering and life cycle costing
  • RAM (Reliability, Availability, and Maintainability)

Considering decent placements and rigorous coursework, MTech in Industrial Engineering at IIT Delhi is not a bad idea.

Should I opt for CSE at IIIT Bangalore or EE at IIT Madras, Delhi, Kanpur, KGP, or Roorkee?

SK
Sanjana Kapoor Posted On : October 9th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

The number and standard of companies visiting IIT Bangalore is as good as the top IITs. With an amazing research culture and a strong alumni network too, its reputation is almost at par with top engineering colleges in India. However, IIIT Bangalore students lack the choice for higher studies. Moreover, there are exclusive interviews from companies like JPMorgan Chase.

Both have their unique strengths and weaknesses. The IIIT curriculum is very challenging while if you join IIT, you would have to manage 2 subjects at the same time.

I will suggest you go for IITs inky if you have no interest in CSE and want to pursue higher studies. But if you are interested in research work, IIIT Bangalore is the best option for you. As for the IITs, you can refer to the following preference order if you have no specific preference over location

Delhi> Madras> Kanpur>KGP> Roorkee

Hope this helps you!

How are the placements for communication engineering from IIT Delhi?

AS
Ashmita Sinha Posted On : April 3rd, 2023
Masters from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

There are no specific placements for VLSI, Communication, or Signal Processing and companies offer job profiles generally under the Electrical Engineering department. For instance, a company like Intel comes for placements, it will seek MTech and Dual Degree students from the Electrical branch generally and not Communication Engineering specifically.

For getting profiles in the Semiconductor domain, you should be proficient in at least one coding language and must have completed related courses such as Digital IC design, DSP Architecture, Embedded systems, DSP Mapping algorithms, etc.

A huge number of companies offering roles in various profiles visit the campus some major being

  • INTEL
  • Qualcomm
  • Samsung
  • Analog Devices
  • AMD
  • Micron Semiconductor
  • Cisco systems
  • Huawei
  • Sony Japan

Most of these companies offer packages ranging from 10-42 LPA. Most Electrical Engineering students get placed with packages above 15 LPA with the placement percentage at around 90%.

How is M.Tech in Atmospheric-Oceanic Science and Technology at IIT Delhi?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : April 5th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

To be brutally honest, IIT Delhi M.Tech program of the Atmospheric-Oceanic Science and Technology branch has a very poor placement scenario. Core job opportunities are scarce and hardly any companies visit with core job offers.

Most students from this branch prefer choosing an elective from the branch that matches their preferences and try to use that knowledge during their placements. Sometimes companies don’t even shortlist this department for placements but you can approach them with the proof that you have studied the required subjects as electives although not as a core subject.

TG
Tripti Garg Posted On : August 13th, 2020
B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Varanasi (2020)

Both IITD Mechanical as well as IIT BHU CSE are good branches.
IIT BHU is 100 Years old Institution and offers a huge Alumni Network. The course curriculum of CSE is designed in a way that will give you enough Industry exposure. Coding Culture at IIT BHU is also very impressive with 10-12 GSOC Selections every year. The Department Club of Programmers (COPS) conducts Codefest which is the annual Department Fest which witnesses the participation of students and programmers worldwide. Moreover, besides Technical things at IIT BHU you can build up other skills since there are many clubs for Extracurriculars like Aeromodelling Club, Robotics Club, Business Club, Cultural Societies, Film & Media Council, etc. Apart from this, the Life at IIT BHU campus and city life of Varanasi is amazing. The average placement package at this IIT is nearly around 8.19 Lakhs while the Highest was 1.54 Crore in 2019. All the top companies including top tech giants Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon offer jobs as well as other sectors where students get jobs are Consulting, Analytics, Education, Business, etc.

IITD is an old well-reputed IIT. Faculties of the Mechanical Department at IITD are very good and experienced. Also, Peer Group at IITD is very competitive since many top rankers join this college. Mechanical Engineering course curriculum is good and one which provides industry skills. Besides Academics IITD too has many Clubs, Societies where students can join to develop different skills. Also, Campus life of IITD and the City life that Delhi offers is quite amazing. Placements too at IITD are good. In 2019 Mechanical Engineering was the brunch with the highest placement records. Many top Mechanical Core companies visit campus such as HUL, ITC, WIPRO, CBS, HONDA, etc. There are also other job profiles available such as Data Analytics, Software, Consulting, Finance, Education, etc.

You should choose the branch depending on your Interest. Choose Mechanical only if you have keen interest otherwise choose CSE to get more opportunities.

Should opt for CS in IIT Roorkee or Electrical in IIT Delhi?

MA
Madhav Aneja Posted On : April 5th, 2023
Lived in Chandigarh, India

My brother is a CS student at IIT Roorkee, yet he suggests everyone should go for Electrical at IIT Delhi instead. Here are a few reasons why:

  • CS coursework is suitable only for those genuinely passionate about Computer Science as its curriculum is very demanding.
  • A few Finance giants are offering huge packages that don’t visit IIT Roorkee but visit only a few IITs like Delhi, Bombay, and Kanpur. Some of these include Tower Research, Morgan Stanley, CSFB, McKinsey, etc.
  • Roorkee lacks many urban facilities available at other IITs making it difficult for the students to explore outside campus or prepare for higher exams.
  • The CS faculty pool of IIT Roorkee is very limited with most eminent professors retiring or leaving the Institute.

All these reasons are more than enough to convince someone to choose IIT Delhi over IIT Roorkee.
