Why does IIT Madras have 85% attendance criteria?

TB
Tithi Banerjee Posted On : March 28th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2021)

Because of the advent of Internet facilities, students tend to skip classes and spend time gaming or involving in other online activities.

Initially, there were no attendance criteria at IIT Madras because there were no distractions like the internet and the attendance rate thus was satisfactory. But with increasing internet facilities, students stay up late gaming and then miss classes. This affected the overall performance of the institute and thus these attendance policies came into the picture.

IIT Madras has a strict attendance policy of 85% which ensures that students are

  • Regularly attending classes and staying on track with their coursework.
  • Fully engaged with their studies and are taking advantage of the educational opportunities provided by the university.
  • Prepared for the future and to have a competitive edge in the job market
  • Able to keep up with the pace of classes and not fall behind.

The Institute despite providing 24/7 Internet facilities expects the students to attend classes regularly and stay aware of the coursework.

Tithi Banerjee Posted On : March 29th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2021)

IIT Madras is a highly competitive and prestigious institution, and the grading system used by the institute is stringent and based on a relative grading system.

In general, the grading system at IIT Madras is based on a 10-point scale, where grades are given in letter grades ranging from A to F, with A being the highest grade and F being the lowest. Additionally, IIT Madras uses a relative grading system, where the grades of students are evaluated based on the performance of the entire class.

It is important to note that grades in IIT Madras are not the sole indicator of academic performance. The institute places a lot of emphasis on research and innovation, and students are expected to excel in their respective fields of study. Additionally, students at IIT Madras are encouraged to participate in various extracurricular activities, such as sports, cultural events, and technical competitions, which provide a well-rounded education and contribute to their overall development.

Overall, while the average grade in IIT Madras may vary depending on the course and academic year, it is important to focus on learning and acquiring skills and knowledge that will help you succeed in your career, rather than just the grades you receive.

How will be the selection procedure for direct PhD in IIT Madras?

SG
Sudesna Gupta Posted On : July 20th, 2021
Former Senior Research Fellow at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

The selection procedure for a direct Ph.D. in IIT Madras varies as per the department. Usually, there is a primary election that is based on the CGPA that you obtain after clearing any national-level entrance exam like GATE.

After this, you need to give an interview and a written test round.

If you want to go for MS by research or Ph.D., you will have to appear for a written test which is followed by an interview. These tests are conducted twice a year, in May and in November. Check the IIT Madra website regularly. Once you apply for the Ph.D. position, and you get shortlisted, and then you can appear for the written exam. The written exam is similar to what the GATE exam is and there is no difference for MS and Ph.D. aspirants. Your interview will be conducted only if you clear the written test.

However, if you do not clear the written or the interview round, and you are interested in some particular work that is being carried out by any professor, you can approach them directly and ask for a research or project assistant’s position. If the professor is impressed by your work, they may convert you to a full-time Ph.D.

How are metallurgy placements at IIT Madras?

MR
Megha Rathi Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Studied at IIT Madras (2019)

The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering is one of the oldest having been started in the same year as the Institute. Its teaching, research, and consultancy activities spread across various fields ranging from conventional metallurgy to frontiers of materials science.

However, IIT Madras lacks core companies for every branch for placements. The same is the case with the Metallurgy department. Students should be encouraged from the beginning of their course for placements. In the worst-case scenario, only a single student gets placed in a core company.

The average salary package offered was barely INR 6 LPA

The placements for the core jobs are concerned, chances are rare as the number of roles offered is very less. However, there are numerous non-core job opportunities offered in Metallurgy.

How is the IIT Madras online course?

AS
Arati Sinha Posted On : March 30th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The online Programming and Data Science course offered by IIT Madras is an additional diploma that can be completed in 3-6 years. Despite the increasing demand, I think this course lacks the necessary rigor and is unnecessary.

  1. This course is usually undertaken by those who are already pursuing an offline engineering course alongside. Some even find it challenging to complete online assignments and give exams at their regular college.
  2. A major part of the curriculum is already available on NPTEL. The only additional benefits are the assignments, tests, and the diploma certificate at the end. Thus, if you are solely after the knowledge and content, many other better colleges and online portals offer the course at a much lower price.
  3. Most students choose this course for the IIT tag. But you don’t get to experience IIT campus life which is unique in itself. The students are always busy with some research work or learning new skills. You miss out on all these despite the high fees you are paying.

Ultimately you decide to make consider the pros and cons of the course. It’s advisable to talk to someone who has completed this course to get a better understanding of it.

IIT Madras electrical engineering or IIT Delhi electrical engineering, which is the best?

AB
Aarti Bora Posted On : March 30th, 2023
IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore

Unless you are considering IIT Delhi because of its location advantage, IIT Madras is the best option. No one ever leaves IIT Madras disappointed. Another factor people consider is the environment provided by the Institute. Most North Indians consider the culture at IIT Madras way different and thus end up losing focus and motivation. If you are affected by such elements, choose the Institute you think will have a culture and people similar to your tastes.

Many North Indians are settling well in IIT Madras and ending up in the top 5% of the batch. So what matters is that the Institute you are choosing should provide the kind of environment that motivates you to learn and excel.

You will face tremendous competition and thus you will have to stay focussed and motivated to do well in that kind of environment. It is extremely necessary to choose the right environment for you as you will be spending 4 years of your life there.

Thus if a certain Institute, for instance, IIT Madras has more facilities than IIT Delhi but you stay among average students in IIT Madras but among the top 5% in IIT Delhi, then the right option for you is IIT Delhi.

B.Tech. Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (2019)

The score required in GATE to get a seat in IIT Madras varies every year depending on various factors such as the number of applicants, the difficulty level of the exam, and the number of available seats in the institute.

Here is a general idea of the GATE score required to secure a seat at IIT Madras:

  • For M.Tech programs: Candidates need to score at least 600-700 marks (out of 1000) to have a good chance of getting into IIT Madras. However, the cutoff score may vary depending on the department, category (General/OBC/SC/ST), and the candidate's GATE score relative to other applicants.
  • For Ph.D. programs: GATE score for Ph.D. programs in IIT Madras is also department-specific and varies depending on the research area and the number of available seats. Generally, candidates with a GATE score above 650-700 have a good chance of being shortlisted for the Ph.D. program at IIT Madras. However, the cutoff score may vary depending on the department and the number of qualified applicants.

It is important to note that the GATE score is just one of the criteria for admission to IIT Madras, and the institute also considers other factors such as academic performance, work experience, research publications, and performance in the written test and/or interview. Candidates are advised to check the department-wise cutoff scores and the admission criteria on the IIT Madras website and prepare accordingly.

How should I prepare for MS Mechanical test at IIT Madras?

TB
Tushar Banerjee Posted On : March 29th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras

The written test for MS Mechanical has 3 major topics to choose from: Design; Thermal; and Manufacturing.

The section you chose has to be necessarily the same for both written and interview. There are a total of 12 questions in the written test - 10 questions from chosen section and 2 questions from Maths.

Every question carries equal marks (2 marks). Usually, 8 questions are numerical based while the rest 4 are theoretical. Numerical questions were based on engineering topics like SOM, Tom, and Mechanics while theoretical questions were highly conceptual. One has to answer around 8-9 questions to get shortlisted for the interview

Once the shortlisted candidates' list is released, you are required to go for document verification. You will be informed of your interview date as well. You might be asked to bring a copy of your first-year project along with you and will be asked questions related to it.

Once summoned, you will be asked to select 3 different projects out of 3 different specializations. (Thermal/design/manufacturing) for the MS course. You will be asked basic questions from the topic you have prepared beforehand and sometimes additional mathematics questions are also asked.

Overall, the interview is not as difficult as it seems and enough preparation will get you through.
