Which is better- Electronics engineering at IIT BHU or ECE at IIT Guwahati?
Both IIT Guwahati and IIT BHU are highly comparable to each other in terms of academic and professional excellence. However, both have their own unique strengths and weaknesses and my answer will guide you to make the most appropriate choice
Course structure: The course structure of both EE at IIT BHU and ECE at IIT Guwahati is similar and has very few differences.
Infrastructure: IIT Guwahati has better infrastructure because of its later establishment. IIT Guwahati is known for its extremely beautiful campus with rich natural beauty.
Alumni: Being older, IIT BHU has a longstanding legacy of excellence. This has a positive effect on the placements.
Culture: IIT BHU has a rich and dynamic work culture that is generally not found in engineering colleges.
Faculty and peer pool: Both IIT BHU and IIT Guwahati have excellent faculty and peer pool being reputed institutions.
Ultimately, it’s all about personal inclinations and there is no fixed right or better choice.
Are we allowed to go outside the hostels at night in IIT Guwahati?
By ‘outside the hostel’ you can mean two things; inside the campus or outside the campus. Well, I am here to talk about both scenarios:
Inside campus
For boys, there is no deadline and they can stroll through the campus even after midnight. Many boys like taking a walk at night and listening to their favorite music. However, girls are expected to return to their hostels before midnight, or else they have to do a late entry. The warden may or may not take action against this.
Outside the campus
Students are not allowed to stay outside the campus later than 10 30. The faculty in charge may be informed in case of any rules not being followed.
How is IIT Guwahati for an MTech in mechanical?
IIT Guwahati is one of the premier institutes in India for engineering and its MTech program in mechanical engineering is considered to be of high quality, with a strong faculty, good infrastructure, and a well-rounded curriculum. The program is also known for its research-oriented approach, which allows students to work on cutting-edge projects and gain hands-on experience.
MTech Mechanical has 5 specializations, namely
- Fluid-Thermal
- Machine Design
- CAM
- Aerodynamics
- Computational mechanics
My knowledge is only limited to Fluid and Thermal although all other specializations have similar scenarios.
- Placements: The placement scenario is decent with 60-70% placements and an average package of around INR 8 to 9 LPA in the core field.
- Higher Education: For those interested in research or higher education an MTech from an old IIT is better. The older the IIT, the stronger connections its professors will have. Ph.D. is all about connections. IIT Guwahati is a perfect choice with extensive research going on in the CFD area.
- Preparing for ESE/ UPSC Exams: Irrespective of the IIT you belong to, you will have very less time to prepare for entrance exams.
Overall, IT Guwahati is a great choice for those interested in pursuing an MTech in mechanical engineering.
Should I attend counselling at IIT Guwahati for an MTech in mechanical admission?
MTech in Mechanical Engineering comprises various specializations. The cutoff for each specialization varies. Usually, the highest cut-off is for machine design then fluid and thermal science followed by CAM and computational mechanics. If you are attending the counseling you have to specify the preference order among these four. So depending on your rank, you might get admission to a specialization you did not want to study.
I recommend that you attend the counseling and don’t make assumptions beforehand. Sometimes the wrong train leads you to the right destination. It’s better to explore all options to determine what’s best for you.
Which is better, IIT BHU electronic or IIT Guwahati mechanical?
For most students, the end goal of getting admission to a college is to secure a job in a good company. So most of the time placements become the basis for evaluating the worth and credibility of an institute. Here are some points pertaining to the placements in IIT BHU and IIT Guwahati
- Very few core jobs are offered with only 20–25% of people from a branch securing a job in their core companies. This is because very few core companies visit and the package offered by them is less than non-core companies. Thus students flock to non-core companies. IITG is much better than IIT BHU in core placements as at IIT BHU, some faculties and labs are not up to the mark.
- There are multiple non-core companies that offer jobs to the IITians in various profiles such as software development, business analysis, operations executive, and Finance management. IT-BHU offers the best non-core opportunities as the workload is less and placements are great.
- You can easily change your branch at IIT BHU with very less effort. All you need to do is maintain a good SPI and then change your branch after the first semester.
- Located in the prime area, IIT BHU will give you a feel of Varanasi, BHU Vishwanath temple.

- The program is not all about creativity, unlike the general assumption, although may need average-level creativity.
- The coursework is demanding and analytical. You need to focus well on your assignments to score well
- You require genuine passion and a desire to improve things around you in order to pursue this field genuinely.
- It’s easy to secure good internships and placements as job opportunities are plentiful. My brother was able to get an internship in the 3rd despite having no lucrative CV with projects.
- The workload is considerably light and you can focus on other things like preparing for MBA or Civil Services, etc
However, to become successful in this field, the primary requirement is your genuine commitment, passion, and tremendous hard work.

Written Test: It is taken to evaluate your accuracy and grasp of concepts. The written test is usually very easy with questions covering basic concepts both numerical and theoretical. Enough time is given and all you need to do is focus on writing accurately.
Interview
The interviewer asks you basic questions regarding your

- Final year project (his project was on sullage treatment using wetlands)
- Water treatment process
- Surface Overflow rate
- Coagulation theories
One suggestion from my side is that always go for the field that intrigues you in MTech else you will end up suffering for 2 years.

I don’t believe there aren’t any alumni from IIT Guwahati that are as successful as alumni from other IITs. In fact, there are many who have made a strong impact on the socio-economic situation of the nation and have global recognition too
Some of the famous alumni at IIT Guwahati are:
- Shekhar Singh Dalal: He belongs to the 2005-2009 batch. Shekhar finished his MS from the University of California, Berkeley, and came back to India to serve the nation. Surprisingly, he got 71st rank in his first attempt in Civil Services Examination - 2011 and is now an IAS.
- Ankit Nagori - He was one of the founders of Flipkart although he is no more a part of it.
- Sanjay Dhar: He is the co-founder of the semiconductor company, Sankalp Semiconductor
- Abhinav Tiwari: He is the co-founder and CEO of the education technology company,
