How is IIT Mandi for CS or Mechanical?

TM
Tithi Mukherjee Posted On : May 23rd, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi

IT Mandi is considered to be a highly reputable institution for both Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering programs. According to NIRF, IIT Mandi was ranked 43rd in 2022 and has consistently been ranked among the top engineering institutes in India.

One of my close friends was a student of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Mandi and shared his experience at the institute for 4 years. He told me that engineers should never choose a branch just because it’s better than the other and only be driven by their passions and inclinations.

IIT Mandi CS branch has been growing at a fast pace. This branch guarantees good salary packages, a very dynamic peer group, research-oriented culture, and a very found and zealous faculty pool. Additionally, the Computer Science and Engineering program at IIT Mandi has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and is considered to be of high quality.

The Mechanical Department on the other hand is yet to reach the IIT standards and it still falls behind in terms of faculty base, infrastructure, and quality course curriculum. However, you will find quite a few PSUs like BPCL, ISRO, and Coal India offering good opportunities to BTech students that speak of the general credibility of the institute.

Ultimately, it is important to choose a program that is the best fit for you and that will allow you to reach your goals.

You can go with the option of IIT Mandi. The recruiters from CSE offer high job packages every year to the students. IIT Mandi is the best place to change your branch to CSE, as it is one of the most competitive fields. You will be placed in a good company with high packages as a fresher in your favorite CSE field. When compared with the semi-new IITs, the best option would be Mandi. For other IITs, branch change might be a difficult task. Over the last three years, about 167 students got enrolled for placements; among them, 156 were placed. So IIT Mandi is a good choice.

Every coin has 2 sides and so does every decision you make. Joining IIT Mandi is one such decision that will bring many advantages and disadvantages. It’s up to you to weigh them and decide.

Pros

  • IIT Mandi campus is one of the most beautiful and surreal places to study at.
  • You get access to a plethora of interdisciplinary subjects apart from your core courses, thus enabling you to explore various fields.
  • The small batch size in turn results in a better faculty-student ratio. One can easily approach the faculties and discuss anything regarding ideas, projects, etc.
  • Branch change policy is very lenient thereby increasing your opportunities to change your branch in case you later find out you have no interest in the field.
  • IIT Mandi has ties with world-famous technical institutes.
  • The student exchange program enables a lot of students from IIT Mandi to go to countries such as Germany, Sweden, etc. every year. One such university is the Technical University Munich.

Cons

  • IIT Mandi is still in its development phase and thus its infrastructure is way behind that of old IITs.
  • IIT Mandi is 15 km away from the main Mandi city. Students have to travel 45 minutes on the bus just to go out to eat at a good place or party.
  • IIT Mandi inter-college fests are not of the same level as that of old IITs so you will be missing out on a lot.

Overall, it’s necessary to contact the current students and make a decision only after weighing the pros and cons.

How convenient are the branch change options at the IIT, Mandi?

SG
Sonam Gupta Posted On : May 24th, 2023
Studied B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (2021)

You will be glad to know that IIT Mandi has a very easy branch change policy. The procedure is simple and many engineering aspirants flock to IIT Mandi with branch change in mind.

  • A maximum of 50% of the batch can opt for a branch change
  • Consequently, the capacity of a certain branch can be increased by 50% after a branch change.
  • For example, if there are 40 students in CSE then 20 more can join CSE while 20 can change their branch to another department.
  • The capacity of a certain branch should not fall below 50% after a branch change.
  • IIT Mandi has no fixed criteria for branch change. Rather, it's based on priority. Usually, students with more scores are given preference.

The branch change process of IIT Mandi varies every year depending on the batch strength and the CGPA level of students. For a safe call, a CGPA of 9+ will help you secure a branch change.

What should I choose considering the branch change opportunities, electrical at IIT Mandi or electrical at IIT Ropar?

PD
Prerona Dasgupta Posted On : March 31st, 2021
B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi (2020)

There is a branch change provision at IIT Mandi which is very lenient too. So if you are confused with your branch and you wish to change your branch in the future, then you should choose IIT Mandi.

One of my friends was in a similar situation a few years back and he opted for IIT Mandi for its flexible branch change policies. He was able to change his branch to CSE. To change your branch to CSE, you will need a CGPA of around 8.6.

IIT Mandi has a 50% branch change allowance whereas at IIT Roper it is 10%. To know more about the branch change rules you can visit the official website.
