How is it possible that IIIT Bangalore's mTech CSE Average package (27.5LPA) is greater than IIT Guwahati CSE Average package (27.04LPA)?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : May 3rd, 2023

The difference in the packages is due to the inflated figures released by the institutes. For instance, Microsoft offers 42 LPA packages but the actual in-hand salary is only 13 LPA.

Also, IIIT Bangalore has no core job offers whereas, in IIT Guwahati, you can also explore other domains apart from IT like finance, consulting, analysis, data science, etc. It is exactly why Inthunk placements should never be the criteria to judge the credibility of an institute or program. Rather, we should start considering in-hand averages.

Another possible reason for IIIT Bangalore's better placements is the excellent research-focused culture that provides great knowledge and scope.

What do people think of IIT Guwahati?

SG
Srimona Gupta Posted On : April 28th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2020)

Owing to its unique location, IIT Guwahati is considered infamous among other IITs and there are many rumors regarding it.

  • Firstly, it’s located in the North-East part and thus parents of South India don’t deem it right to send their children here.
  • Being an earthquake zone, it’s considered a risky place to study.
  • Surrounded by mountains, lakes, and trees many people think that IIT Guwahati lacks the much-needed sports facility
  • People think it's not possible to hang out with friends in the city due to the construction of the new bridge across the Brahmaputra.
  • People think they won’t be able to enjoy their holidays within the campus though there are many tourist spots a few kilometers from campus like Shillong, Dawki, etc

Most of these assumptions are not true and IIT Guwahati is actually a very good option for Engineering.

Shubhangi Dutt Posted On : May 5th, 2023
B.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (2022)

When considering a certain program, there are 2 things to choose from; the institute and the branch. So my answer talks about both, IIT Guwahati in general and MTech in Computational Mechanics.

IIT Guwahati

  • IIT Guwahati is known for its extremely beautiful campus that encompasses natural beauty and offers a serene ambiance.
  • The accommodation facilities of IIT Guwahati are excellent with every student getting a single room irrespective of their branch and specialization.
  • IIT Guwahati gives equal importance to extracurricular activities and various clubs and societies help promote the same.

Computational Mechanics

This course is the perfect blend of Mechanics and programming. The key highlights pertaining to the course are

  • The theoretical part primarily comprises FEM (Finite Element Methods) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
  • Numerical analysis is also a significant part of this course. Maths lovers may find it interesting
  • C programming is also a part of the course
  • You will be taught ANSYS at a computational mechanics lab
  • A wide ocean of electives is available in the second semester wherein you can easily opt for subjects from the fluid, thermal, design, and manufacturing field.
  • CM students are eligible to sit for all core placements with some companies specifically asking for them. Most of the companies recruit M.Tech Mechanical students for their R&D sector.
  • If you invest a lot of effort and do your best, you can become a CAE (Computational Aided Engineering) engineer by the end of 2 years.

Overall staying and studying at IIT Guwahati will offer you a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you will cherish for the coming years.

How is IIT Guwahati in comparison to IIT Roorkee and NIT Trichy?

TA
Tithi Aggrawal Posted On : July 26th, 2023
Lives in New Delhi

According to me, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati are better choices than NIT Trichy. My preference is based on several reasons-

  1. The learning experience at IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati is richer as compared to NIT Trichy.
  2. As an IITian, you get to know a greater number of opportunities.
  3. The research environment at IITs is richer and you will get involved in research work at an early stage of your undergraduate studies. Thus, if you are aiming for higher studies, IITs are a better option.
  4. Placements depend on your stream. However, IITs offer better placement opportunities overall.
  5. IITR and IITG have a larger alumni network to provide support and assistance.

The above points are especially true for IITR and IITG as they are amongst the oldest and most renowned IITs. NIT Trichy is a well-renowned and excellent institution, however, IITR and IITG are better according to me.

Did you take admission in IIT Guwahati?

VT
Vikas Tripathi Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (2019)

Yes, my brother had taken admitted to IIT Guwahati as he was a nature lover and its campus suited him best. Life here is full of adventures and new discoveries. This is the best campus life you can explore.

Most academic centers and buildings are surrounded by hills that add to the scenic view. You can bring your family here and make them feel proud of you. Alcheringa is one of the best cultural fests in the country.

At IIT Guwahati, you will see every festival is celebrated with equal enthusiasm. Irrespective of your cultural background, you will get to explore every religion and culture. IIT Guwahati has a great appreciation culture and awards Ana’s recognitions are in plenty. The talents and skills of students are recognized by the institute and honored.

If you are feeling low and want a break from the rush hour, you can just sit and relax on the benches near these campus lakes.

Tea and coffee help you survive the difficult exam phase. The campus is home to many beautiful birds from far away. I will highly recommend you wake up early at least once and go for a morning walk. It will definitely be a life-changing experience!

What are the marks at which it was 10 CGPA in first year at IIT Guwahati?

NT
Nived Tripathi Posted On : May 4th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG)

It’s almost impossible to achieve a 10 CGPA after the first year at IIT Guwahati or any other IIT. So I will assume it’s the GP (Grade Point) you refer to. Well, the GP of every course varies throughout the year

  • The lab marks are normalized with your lab group. This means they are calculated relatively. For example, students might get 10 GP for getting 85+ marks.
  • In lectures, the relative grading is followed. Under this, every student is given a different grade point. Usually, the rank ranges are like this; Rank 1–35 get 10 GP, Rank 36–100 get 9, and so on. In the case of absolute grading, 75+ or 80+ get 10 GP, 65+ or 70+ get 9, and so on.

The grading system at IIT Guwahati can be seen changing every year depending on the student's performance and professors' overview of the batch.

What is the scope of a bachelor of design from IIT Guwahati?

SG
Sohini Ghose Posted On : May 4th, 2023
studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati

Bachelor of Design or B.Des is a great program offered by IIT Guwahati. Here are a few pros and cons to give you a better understanding of the course

Pros:

  • Excellent placements: The Bachelor of Design at IIT Guwahati has amazing placements. The placement percentage is around 85-90%. The highest CTC in 2021 was recorded at INR 35 LPA and the average is in the range of 12-15 LP.
  • Easier grading: IIT Guwahati follows a relative grading system which means you will be graded relative to the students of your branch. This system is very easy and I know a student who had a 7.3 CPI of 7.3 in his first year but managed to score 9.2 in his third semester. Many others have an SPI above 9.
  • Matter- The concepts taught are associated with the job roles you will be offered and the learning experience is great with very approachable professors. You will be given many projects to hone your skills.

Cons

  • Owing to the general assumption, people will consider you inferior for joining this branch. However, it’s much more than just art. It comprises web designing, app designing and other designing elements.

All in all, to make the most out of the program you will have to explore beyond academics and undertake challenging projects to broaden your knowledge base.
