Which is better for an M.Tech in thermal, NIT Warangal or IIT Guwahati?

NT
Nived Tripathi Posted On : May 6th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG)

MTech in Thermal is equally decent at NIT Warangal and IIT Guwahati. Both institutes give an edge to each other in most aspects and thus it leaves us only with a few parameters to evaluate IIT Guwahati and NIT Warangal.

  • Ranking: IIT Guwahati Overall ranking by NIRF is 8 out of 200 colleges in India in 2022 whereas NIT Warangal, Warangal Overall ranking by NIRF is 45 out of 200 colleges in India in 2022.
  • Location: Locations-wise, IIT Guwahati is the clear winner considering its low average temperature and splendid natural beauty.
  • Alumni: NIT Warangal has an upper hand here because of its early establishment. The extensive alumni network helps the students to secure placements, internships, fundraising, and many more.
  • Hostel: IIT Guwahati has excellent accommodation facilities with single rooms for every student irrespective of your college year. NIT Warangal may or may not have twin sharing.
  • Placements: Placements of both institutes are similar with IIT Guwahati having a slight advantage over NIT Warangal due to its higher average package.
  • Value: For those planning to pursue a Ph.D., IIT Guwahati is a better choice because of the IIT tag. However, if you just want to pursue MTech and prepare for competence exams, then NIT will be a decent choice.
  • Fees: NIT Warangal MTech fees is ?1.34 Lakhs )1st Year Fees) whereas IIT Guwahati MTech fees are ? 67,350/Yr

Sparing the alumni network, everything speaks in favor of IIT Guwahati and makes it a better choice than NIT Warangal.

Is there any scope of doing an M.Tech in Applied Mechanics from MNNIT Allahabad?

PM
Prachi Manas Posted On : April 29th, 2021
M.Tech. Applied Mechanics & Gate & IES Mentor, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology, Allahabad

I have a few friends pursuing MTech Applied Mechanics from MNNIT Allahabad. According to their review, the Department of Applied Mechanics at MNNIT is known for its rigid and research-oriented teachers.

If you plan to complete a Ph.D. and further studies after M.tech then this course is a good option.

Course Fee

INR 18,000 to 2 Lacs

Average Salary

11.8 LPA

Highest Salary

29.16 LPA

Placement Percentage

31.26%

Top Recruiters

ATK, Boeing, ExxonMobil, Ford Motor Company, FM Global,

However, if you are opting for MTech just to prepare for BTech level competitive examinations, then it will be better not to choose this department.

MTech students do get placement offers in the on-campus placement drive. If you work hard and maintain good grades, you are likely to secure a placement offer. Many private companies visit the campus for placement drives. Securing a placement offer depends more on your effort.

PB
Pushpita Bose Posted On : August 14th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar (2019)

Being an IIT, it has some excellent professors in the mechanical department, hence academically one needs not worry. Moreover, many students look for thermal science specialization in IITs so that it can be a great choice. Talking about the mechanical engineering department at IIT BBS, it has some excellent, well-experienced professors, so academically, it’s reliable. The thermal engineering professors are working on various research projects so students also can assist them with a useful contribution and takeout some best experiences. Moreover, IITs provide many opportunities when it comes to Ph.D. or research assistantship from foreign universities if students want to go. As per the data, the placements of Thermal engineering is nearly 100% with 70% of them in industries and 30% in academic. However, if you are getting the same course in old/top 5 IITs or 3 NITs, then nothing like that.

Which one is better for the MTech: fluid and energy system in IIT Hyderabad or thermal in NIT Trichy?

BG
Bidita Ghose Posted On : May 16th, 2023
Lives in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India

The better institute for MTech out of IIT Hyderabad and NIT Trichy depends on what you want to do after MTech.

For those inclined towards research work and are willing to go for higher education like Ph.D. from a foreign university, IIT Hyderabad is the most suitable option. This is because it is a new IIT and thus has the best research and lab facilities in comparison to older IITs and NITs. The MTech program here will bring about a drastic change in your overall personality.

For those who want to get employed as soon as possible, then NIT Trichy is a preferable choice. This is because

  • The sole purpose of students coming here is to get placed with lucrative packages
  • The initial days witness top firms after which only average companies pay a visit to the campus
  • The placement percentage is almost 100% every year
  • The teachers do it encourage research culture at all.

This does not mean that IIT Hyderabad does not have placement opportunities. It’s just that for placements specifically, NIT is better but overall IIT Hyderabad is the best option.

How is the interview at IIT Bhubaneswar for an M.Tech thermal? What are the chances that a general category guy with 3061 rank and 704 score get a seat?

MR
Mohona Roy Posted On : August 13th, 2020
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology Dhanbad (2018)

Chances are not much good as the number of seats in the thermal specialization are less (only 18) and IIT Bhubaneswar conducts a rigorous interview (half an hour to 45 minutes per candidate), within that duration you need to explain the topics on the board to the interviewers. Some of the interview questions asked in the previous year were boundary layer theory, transient heat conduction, the significance of Prandtl, Nusselt, etc.

The process for admission in the course is based on marks secured in graduation. The student must have 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA in a 10-point scale in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (with a valid GATE score).

The final selection of regular candidates will be based on the combined scores of the candidates in GATE (70%) and the written test (30%). The Written Test and Interview shall be given equal weightage of 15% each.

Students in the unreserved category will be eligible to sit in the interview subject to scoring a minimum of 40% marks in the written test and for final selection a minimum of 50% marks in the interview.

Hence, an interview becomes a very crucial factor in securing admission. It is completely technical in nature as explained above it judges the in-depth knowledge of the applicant in the subject. NPTEL lectures can be useful in preparing for the interview so as to enhance the understanding of the in-depth concepts of the subject in detail. Since the analysis part of some concepts as mentioned above can also be asked. The project report is also required there so one can expect questions from there also.

Finally, the cut off of the course is around 600 hence you can expect to have a fair chance if you have good understanding and command over your subjects.
