NIT Durgapur is superior to NIT Jalandhar. NIT Durgapur is older than NITJ and thus has a larger alumni base. NIT Jalandhar was founded later to provide better infrastructure, but NITD is currently undergoing massive infrastructure modernization. Because it is in Bengal, and Bengal has produced well-known scientists and scholars, the environment for research is favorable. Mechanical engineering is one of the best fields here.
The CSIR CMERI (Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute) is located directly across the street from the NITD main campus and has an MOU with the university. NITD has one of the best coding cultures in the world. The rankings of institutes can be found on international coding competition websites.
I completed my B.Tech ECE from NIT Durgapur a few years back. Thus, I can tell you about the ECE department of my college-
The placements for ECE are quite poor. Barely any core companies visit the campus for recruitments. As a result, ECE students try for IT companies during the placement season. The curriculum is also not up to the mark. It needs to be updated and aligned with present day needs of the semiconductor industry. Scoring good CGPAs is easy but one has to stay updated on the industry standards on our own.
IIIT Allahabad has a research oriented environment, and its attendance policy is quite lenient. It offers good placements in the IT department. Try to approach some seniors from IIITA to find out the condition of its ECE branch.
If the B.Tech ECE at IIIT Allahabad is as good as its B.Tech IT, consider joining this college over NIT Durgapur.
Yes, NIT Durgapur has amazing hostel facilities. The accommodation facilities are amazing for girls who are allotted the HALL-13. Students are given huge double occupancy rooms. Other hostel facilities include common rooms with indoor game facilities and a big LED television. Students also get 24×7 high-speed internet connection in hostels. Most importantly you will be making some amazing friends for life!
All three colleges namely JU, NIT Durgapur, and IIEST are the premier institutions of the country. Each one of them had their own strengths and weaknesses. Let’s go through each of them individually to understand better.
Jadavpur University:
IIEST Shibpur
NIT Durgapur
Overall, I feel JU has a certain edge over the other two colleges in terms of crowd diversity. However, if you want the NIT tag then NIT Durgapur is also a good option.
The placements for B.Tech Chemical Engineering are good at NIT Durgapur. For core placements, companies like RIL, JSW Cement, Vedanta, Linde, Tata Tinplate, Haldia Petrochemical, and HPCL visit the campus. Students are also offered placements in Finance, Software, and startup companies like Grofers, Analytics Quotient, Verity, Oracle FSS, Infosys, IBM, and Wipro.
Some students choose to pursue a Ph.D.. or Master’s in renowned universities/colleges like IIT Kgp, IIT Bombay, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Haldia institute of technology, and BITS Goa.
During 2023, B.Tech Chemical Engineering recorded 83.33% placements. The average salary stood at INR 8.87 LPA for this course.
Thus, placement prospects are quite good for the B.Tech Chemical Engineering students of NIT Durgapur.
NIT Durgapur is older than 60 years and most of its infrastructure is in ruins. The condition of hostels and laboratories is pathetic but the overall situation is in control and no major obstacle is experienced in academics. NIT Durgapur has a relatively smaller campus than other colleges. So it's better organized too. Currently, new hostels are being constructed and academic buildings are being renovated. The campus still is lacking in terms of high-tech amenities. For example most colleges have an e-library, and NIT Durgapur has an old and small library. There are two playgrounds that are hardly functional.
NIT Durgapur has a visually pleasing campus surrounded by lush greenery. The campus has its pros and cons. In the end, the size of the campus does not determine your career but your passion does!
The best way to choose the right college for you is to give preference to the branch and not just the tag. As a NIT pass out my friend claims that the opportunities NIT provides, and the freedom it gives you to grow is unmatched. The institute does give you a high level of freedom that might break or make your career. It’s you who decides the choices you make.
The best part about NIT Durgapur is its active club culture, which ensures a good bond between like-minded people. Also, being a government college, NIT charges very low fees in comparison to MIT, a private college.

Here are some key points about both colleges which will help you in your decision-making-
According to me, a CSE from Jadavpur University is a better option.
You can take a drop year if you are confident that you will get IIT. But if you want to have options, it will be better to join IIIT Gwalior and prepare for JEE Advanced. The curriculum isn’t too demanding, you will have ample time for preparation. Also, this way you will have a backup.
IIIT Gwalior has an excellent coding culture. If you are interested in coding and have skills, you can get good placement offers.
The central location of NIT Durgapur gives its students access to a number of places to hang out and explore. Here are a few fun things you can do on weekends
Hope you enjoy your weekends!
