Here are some details about VLSI from IIT Dhanbad-
Unlike before, VLSI students study only the subjects relevant to their specialization. The faculty is mostly good. Some of the teachers aren’t up to the mark. But you can make up for that through self study. You’ll get plenty of internship opportunities. For placements, more companies have been visiting in recent years. The absence of an airport in Dhanbad may contribute to many HRs hesitating to visit the campus.
Since becoming an IIT, the college has witnessed rapid improvement in curriculum and infrastructure. You may consult some seniors from VLSI to get a clearer perspective of the current conditions.

As a former student of Mineral Engineering at IIT Dhanbad, I will offer some insight into my department-
Advantages
- The number of lectures and syllabus of Mineral Engineering are quite manageable. With some effort, you’ll easily score a good CGPA in all your semesters.
- The course will give you free time to study for CAT/GRE/UPSC, or to practice coding.
- The department allows more freedom to enjoy campus life and perform other activities on the side.
Disadvantages
- You can’t write the GATE exam.
- Very few core companies visit the campus, and the placement scenario is in a poor state for Mineral students. However, with good communication skills and an 8+ CGPA, you can hope to get placed in a good organization.
- The curriculum is light, so you’ll severely lag behind foreign university students.
- The package offered to Mineral students stands nowhere compared to that grabbed by CSE students.
But despite the disadvantages, you’ll have to make peace with the fact that your rank isn’t enough for CSE. Also, not everyone in CSE performs exceptionally.
Mineral Engineering (especially at IIT Dhanbad) has very limited scope, but it offers you ample freedom and time to work on your skills and build your future.
How is IIT Dhanbad in terms of living conditions as it is a Naxal-prone area?
Dhanbad is not a Naxal prone area. Let me give you some insight into this city-
- It is the second most populated city in Jharkhand and the coal capital of India.
- Dhanbad Rail Division is the 2nd biggest in revenue generation after Mumbai division.
- Dhanbad generates huge revenue for the government, and international industries are set up in its outskirts.
- The literacy rate of Dhanbad is 81% higher than the national average.
- It is selected under the Smart India Project.
The city isn’t as clean as Bangalore, Mysore, etc. But IIT Dhanbad has one of the cleanest campuses among all IITs.
IIT Dhanbad is a well renowned college with top class infrastructure and facilities. You’ll get a healthy and safe environment within its campus.
Which college is best for CSE- IIT Patna, MNNIT Allahabad or ISM Dhanbad?
I will refrain from giving you a detailed answer because others have already done so. Rather my explanation will be simple yet impactful
- IIT Patna is a new IIT so you can avail the benefits of the IIT tag only and the institute in itself is just average.
- MNNIT Allahabad on the other hand has a rich legacy as it’s an old college. It has extensive alumni and is one of the top NITs.
- ISM, now an IIT, has the combined features of both aforementioned institutes. It’s old and also has an IIT tag attached to it.
That being said, my preference order among these institutes is, ISM>IIT Patna>MNNIT
Should I take cse at ISM Dhanbad or civil at IIT Hyderabad?
I would never recommend you to go for any core branch at new IITs. With the new IIT tag, ISM Dhanbad is a far better option as it was established in 1926 and enjoys global recognition in contrast to IIT Hyderabad, which is still under development. Both the colleges are poles apart in terms of infrastructure, facilities, etc.

How much CGPA is required for branch change to CSE at IIT Dhanbad?
Last year IIT Dhanbad's cutoff for branch change to CSE was 9.3. However, I will suggest you not consider joining any colleges solely based on your branch change.
One of my friends was about to make a similar decision when he got Vil at IIT Kanpur. However, seniors dissuaded him from joining the college just for branch change. This is because branch change is very unpredictable and might ruin your future. It's advisable to check the first-year course before considering branch change.
Branch change might be easy for some while very challenging for others.So, I will suggest you never be fully dependent on department change. Always check the content of the branch before making the final choice.
Which is better, IIT Dhanbad or MNNIT Allahabad for an M.Tech in CSE in terms of placement?
Both IIT Dhanbad and MNNIT Allahabad are at the same level when it comes to MTech placements in CSE. Most companies visiting IIT Dhanbad for placements also visit and offer similar profiles to students of MNNIT Allahabad. However, the kind of roles you receive depends more on individual skills and profiles.
Nevertheless, IIT Dhanbad has a slight edge over MNNIT Allahabad because of its IIT tag which proves to be beneficial in shaping your career and opening multiple doors for you. As for the placements,
- MNIT MTech CSE placements recorded a total of 42-43 students getting placed. The CS placements were third highest after Mechanical and Electronics.
- IIT Dhanbad only had 5 students in its MTech program last year out of which 2 opted out and the median package was INR 14 LPA
Ultimately make the decision on the basis of your personal inclinations and preferences like location, proximity to home, and brand value.
Does IIT Dhanbad conduct a spot round during MTECH admissions?
Yes, IIT Dhanbad conducts a spot round during MTech admissions thereby increasing your chances of getting a seat. Even if you have taken admission in another branch, you can still change it on a spot round if you have filled in the form of another branch you want.
Which one should I choose for CSE, BITS Pilani, NIT Trichy or ISM Dhanbad?
It is always better not to choose IIT Patna if you are looking for a good academic life. As we know, IIT Patna is one of the leading institutes in advancement and infrastructure, but they are weak in academics, good faculty, and placement support. Here are some points that substantiate my statement about IIT Patna
Faculty – IIT Patna has only less qualified faculties who do not have sufficient knowledge about the subjects and are not interested in teaching. Other IITs have far better faculties when compared with Patna Placement Support – IIT Patna is not up to the mark when it comes to placement support. Only 40% of students get placement here, and it varies based on the batches. Other Branches – They are more struggling than the students from the CSE department as they are not satisfied with the internship programs and only a few got placement So it is better to choose other IITs, BITS, or NITs for CSE other than IIT Patna.Which is better: Civil at IIT Madras or CSE at IIT Dhanbad?
If you are facing a dilemma between choosing computer science at ISM Dhanbad and civil engineering at IIT Madras, here are some points to consider:
