What is the average package at IIT, Kharagpur for applied geology?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

The average packages of “Applied Geology” or any other branch apart from CS, ECE, EE, and MnC are highly misleading as they include both core and non-core jobs with non-core jobs forming the majority.

In reality, IIT campus placements offer very few core jobs in certain departments and Applied Geology Is one of them. So most of the students tend to go for Non-Core jobs related to their field of interest like Coding, Finance, Data Analysis, etc. The number of companies offering core jobs in departments such as Mechanical or Chemical is very low. So out of the entire batch, only toppers are offered core jobs while the rest go for non-core jobs. The placement percentage is a combination of both these jobs and thus cannot tell you specifically about the placements of that particular department.

On an average batch size of 25-30 students, only 4-5 get core jobs in Applied Geology while the rest get non-core jobs. So your skills and abilities matter a lot during such branch placements. The median salary of Applied Geology is around INR 15 LPA and some top recruiters include Capgemini, Cipla, Cognizant, Genpact, IBM, ICICI, Just dial, Oil India Limited, YesBank, and more.

How is it to opt for Agriculture and Food engineering in IIT Kharagpur? What is the scope for non core jobs?

AC
Anumita Chatterjee Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK)

Agriculture and Food Engineering faces no competition in the Indian market and thus its students usually target higher studies from foreign universities. Basically, no other IIT has had this branch till now.

The course curriculum includes basic principles of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and civil engineering, but each of these is taught in agricultural aspects.

Since the students of this course do not specialize in any branch, the placement scenario of this branch is very poor. Agricultural Engineering companies might have a special interest in you but the main problem is this branch is not known to many top companies. Eventually, there are only a very few core companies that offer placements.

The worst part is that even companies offering non-core jobs that are open for students of all branches don’t consider students of this specific branch. So it all depends on your individual performance and your profile.

Hence the scope of non-core jobs in this department is decent and depends mostly on your individual profile and performance.

  • It has a sprawling 2200+ lush green campus
  • It is built over a detention camp used by the British Raj to mark the triumph of Indian Technical Education
  • It has the largest student base and the most number of departments.

What is something that I'll benefit from most in IIT Kharagpur compared to other IITs?

AC
Anumita Chatterjee Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK)

One thing that you will benefit from the most by studying at IIT Kharagpur is that you will learn to survive despite all the challenges thrown at you.

Firstly, its location disadvantage poses many problems like traveling long distances for food, shopping or AC hostel rooms. However, all this will seem meaningless once to develop deep bonds with your peers and end up making friends for life. You will start finding happiness in just Maggie and chai and won’t need lavish food dates to make you happy. Moreover, your personal and communication skills will develop considerably. Befriend your seniors and join societies that promote extracurriculars and you will experience a fun-filled campus life.

All this will prepare you for real-life challenges and you will be ready to face the world without the armor of the Institute.

Another distinguishing feature of IIT Kharagpur is no restrictions on data usage, LAN bans, or hostel curfew, unlike other IITs.

As a final year student with very limited coding skills studying at IIT Kharagpur, how should I prepare for the upcoming placements?

NG
Nikhil Goal Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

If you are someone with a low CGPA and no coding skills, here are a few ways to prepare for your placements

Apply off-campus: This will give you a push and will make sure you prepare your CV way before others. You will also be able to upscale it better. Having prior interview experience will help you prepare for being confident, convince others, and handling rejections. Moreover, you will have a chance to pursue a career in a field of interest that is not possible in the hustle and bustle of on-campus placements. In fact, most students forget their passions in the journey of seeking a good job and getting placed.

  • Prepare for CAT: This is an obvious yet important step. Consider this as the turning point of your career. A lot of selection tests will ask questions based on CAT so you need to be prepared for it.
  • Gather information: Be aware of all the necessary procedures pertaining to placements by talking to alumni, and finding out how selection processes work. Attend pre-placement talks and find out about companies. Gather knowledge about current events and company histories so you can appear confident and well-informed during the interview.
  • Don’t lose hope: Placements are largely based on luck as very minor factors can work in your favor or against it during an interview. Also, interviews involve a number of uncontrollable factors such as your GD group, the panel you get selected for, and the interviewer's state of mind are some factors completely beyond your control.

So it’s very important to know that failure is not the end of the world and you can achieve much more even outside of placements.

What are the pros and cons of IIT Kharagpur?

NG
Nikhil Goal Posted On : March 23rd, 2023
Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

IIT Kharagpur is considered one of the premier engineering colleges of India and many engineering aspirants dream of joining this institute. Like every coin has two sides, this institute has a number of pros and cons that one must consider before making the final decision.

Pros

  • As an IITian at KGP, you will be privileged to attend the oldest and the largest IIT in the country which is spread across more than 2100 acres. It has the highest number of departments and intake of students.
  • IIT KGP is well-known for its excellent academic environment that is promoted by extremely learned professors who are experts in their own fields of research.
  • IIT Kharagpur has an extensive research-oriented approach that enables the students enthusiastic about research to pursue their passion here. They get to work under highly skilled professors or seniors in the form of mentors.
  • IIT Kharagpur also gives importance to international exposure in the form of foreign internships, PPOs, and job offers.
  • The placement scenario at IIT Kharagpur has been improving over the past few years and more students get domestic and international offers from MNCs, IT companies or companies, and Non-core companies. The average package of all the departments combined is around INR 15 to 18 LPA.
  • Students are guided and offered a number of opportunities by the career development Centre, CDC of IIT Kharagpur.
  • IIT Kharagpur also promotes extracurricular activities that are usually supervised by technology students, Gymkhana. These activities cover a wide area ranging from robotics club to social development club, music club to finance club, and everything one can look for.
  • Large number of opportunities are provided in sports, ranging from cricket, football, basketball, badminton, squash, tennis table, tennis athletics et cetera. Some sports facilities include sports fields and an Olympic size swimming pool.

Cons:

  • The only flaw that makes people hesitate to choose IITKGP is probably its rural and remote location with a lack of transport and other facilities. This also limits the opportunities for students to a considerable extent.
  • The girls-to-boys ratio is around 10:1 which is quite low for a coed college.
  • There are extreme monsoon conditions that might be a problem for many.

I am sure the cons are not strong enough to overshadow the pros and one should definitely consider joining this institute.

What is it like to study Physics at IIT Kharagpur?

AC
Anumita Chatterjee Posted On : March 22nd, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK)

A student at IIT Kharagpur can study Physics even without attending classes or going to labs. I think the m experience in any department depends mainly on 3 factors

  • Your own motivation
  • Professors
  • Peer group

Your own motivation: You either get inspired or are naturally motivated. The former does not need much external pressure. This means you can function well even without good facilities or professors. However, those who lack such inspiration need constant motivation to depend on good professors to develop an interest in the course and perform well. Physics is a difficult subject and one cannot solely depend upon self-study. So physics at IIT Kharagpur is not for those who lack inherited motivation.

Professors: Sadly, IIT Kharagpur has only a few professors that make it into the category of experienced and learned. Most professors are good at research but lack teaching skills. If the second and third-year subjects are not taught by good professors, you will face quite a bit of a downfall in this path.

Department:

Any particular department can be evaluated on the basis of labs, workload, grading, placements, and scope for higher studies.

  • Labs: The labs are neither too good nor too bad and are just considered average at IIT Kharagpur.
  • Workload: The workload is huge with 5 subjects every semester till the 4th year and 4 labs every week.
  • Grading: Absolute Grading system is followed which is quite challenging.
  • Placements: No core companies visit the campus for placements for the Physics department. So the only option left is to sit for non-core companies like IT, Analytics, Finance, Operations, and Management. However, you can get into these companies with your own set of skills provided that you stand out among recruiters.
  • Scope for higher studies: There is a lot of scope for higher studies provided that you have good internships, projects, and grades.

Peer group:

Having passionate people in your batch adds to the overall learning experience. The peer group in KGP comprises usually hostel friends or friends from societies or clubs.
