How did IIT Indore become so good in competitive programming?
Asking how IIT Indore became good in programming is as lame as asking why Indians are good at cricket. The only reason is that it’s the first thing IIT Indore did big and succeeded.
There are a number of students who started the legacy one of them being Archit Karandikar, an IOI Bronze medal winner. Many followed the footsteps of this genius of them being Sanjeev Shenoy and Gaurav Agarwal who too gained fame in competitive programming. IIT Indore had the honor to even make it to the World Finals. In the World Finals of 2013-14, the trio went to Ekaterinburg and again achieved a milestone.
It was after this that IIT Indore picked pace in competitive programming and then competitive programming and many coding lovers started coming in flocks to IIT Indore CS.
Sadly, the faculties are rarely involved and make no major contributions. It’s the students who are left on their own to give shape to their dreams and talents.
Which IIT is better for civil, IIT Indore or IIT Patna?
IIT Indore is one of the leading new IITs that has made its name because of its multiple achievements. Here is exactly why you should give more preference to IIT Indore than IIT Patna.
- The faculties are very approachable and cooperative. They guide you to do projects and even motivate you for research work. Additionally, they teach you tactics to clear GRE and GATE for top universities and PSU respectively. Such kind of guidance isn’t available at every institute.
- The faculty-to-student ratio is great around 12 - 13 faculties for 40 students. This helps the students to get individual attention from faculty who track the personal and individual growth of every student.
- IIT Indore has ties with the University of Stuttgart, Germany enabling students to do internships in the second year.
- The students' demands are given due importance and the HODs bring all necessary changes demanded by the students to make things easy.
- IIT Indore being new has top-notch labs with all modern equipment and instruments.
In all, IIT Indore is a great choice for Civil Engineering.
What should I take, Metallurgy and Material Science Engineering at IIT Indore or Electrical Engineering at IIT Bhilai?
In general, it is better to choose the branch of your choice. Given below are a few trade-offs of the two choices given on the question which may help you in making the decision.
MEMS - IIT Indore:
- Administration: IIT Indore belongs to the 2008-09 batch of IITs. Although it can’t be compared with older IITs but it has made remarkable progress in this short span of time. The administration and departments are well-settled. Extra-curricular at the institute are also developing with time. In 4-5 years, the institute is expected to have a great future.
- Course: BTech MEMS at IIT Indore is fairly new and the duration of the existence of the course is the same as the B Tech Electrical course at IIT Bhilai. However, the MEMS department has been functioning for a while at IIT Indore. As a department it has experience. The faculties are great.
- Placements: MEMS has a lower placement rate as compared to other core branches of engineering. Metallurgy and Material Science is a niche field of study and the degree outcome is more research-oriented.
- Change of Branch: However, you can change your branch to Electrical or Mechanical from MEMES at IIT I, if you work hard in your 1st year. Changing to CS is always difficult because of the competition.
Electrical at IIT Bhilai:
- Facilities: IIT Bhilai was established back in 2016. It is only 4 years old. Electrical is a core Engineering discipline with better career prospects. But the disadvantage of this choice is the institute. You will have a few seniors in your branch and temporary faculties.
- Extracurricular: You will have good opportunities to start events, clubs, in the institute. On the other hand, the future at this institute is a bit uncertain.
- Campus Life: The institute also does not have a proper campus. You will not have a proper campus life for the next 4 years.

One of my friends had an option between Mechanical at IIT Indore and CS at a new IIT. He chose Mechanical at IIT Indore. Judging by his experience it is safe to say that he made the right decision at least for 2-3 more years.
The choice is up to you if you would rather trade off on the branch or on the institution. If you are confident you can secure a good future from the limited opportunities a new IIT can offer, you should go for it.
Is MSc in astronomy preferable at IIT Indore?
The MSc in Astronomy at IIT Indore is a recently launched program and it’s difficult to determine its worth and credibility just yet. IIT Indore is the only IIT to offer such a unique program. The entrance to this program is through the JAM (physics) examination. Here is why it should be preferred
- Job opportunities for this program are present both in academia and industry
- Research work positions are present in universities, observatories, and research institutes.
- Teaching positions at various colleges and universities in India are also a good option for the students of this program.
However, IIT Indore MSc Astronomy will restrict your research area to astronomy only. So, this program should be taken only if you are certain of doing full-time research in Astronomy. If you want to explore other fields of Physics then go for MSc Physics from any other IIT.
I was surprised to see IIT Indore on a list of top universities in the world for coders. How good is this institution?
IIT Indore is one of the leading new IITs that has proved itself in every aspect be it sports, culture, or academics. IIT Indore has made big achievements in T v/s M, GSoC, ICPC, start-ups, projects, and Inter-IIT Meet. The following points further prove IIT Indore’s versatility.
- The small batch size makes IIT Indore look like a close-knitted family. The relationship between seniors and juniors is great. Here, you will get a chance to discover yourself by exposing yourself to versatile things like calling companies for sponsorship and working on new start-ups and projects.
- Big changes are visible in the OR/CR of the Electrical and Mechanical branches proving the credibility of the new IITs further.
- IIT Indore had the honor to make it to the ACM-ICPC finals thrice. In fact, it has been the highest-ranked team from India for the past 2-3 years making it the first new IIT to participate in such a mega contest.
- Spread across 520 acres of land, IIT Indore has a newly built campus that has modern infrastructure and facilities. The accommodation facilities are top notch and students enjoy single seater rooms.
- Yearly, T v/s M is held between IITI and IIMI wherein students of both institutes showcase their talents in singing, dancing, dramatics, quiz, writing, photography, etc
- IIT Indore has active student-driven cultural and technical clubs. Many events are organized by these clubs like RoboRace by the Robotics Club and the Programming League by the Programming Club.
- The SESC or the Student Entrepreneurship Support Cell is extremely active and has even organized the first-ever TEDx Event at IIT Indore.
New IIts aren't established yet but are in the beautiful process of establishing themselves. The students take an active part in this process and discover themselves amongst this. So, IIT Indore is rightly famous for its coding culture and is indeed a good institute.
Which branch is better to join, CSE at IIT Indore or MNC (mathematics and computing) at IIT Guwahati?
My brother was in a similar dilemma last year when he had to choose between MnC IIT Guwahati and CSE IIT Indore. Eventually, he went for IIT Indore CSE. The main reason he decided against going for the MnC program was his lack of interest in Math. And when we talk about Math at IIT, trust me when I say it’s at another level. It’s purely proof-based and high-level Math that can be handled only by true Math lovers. The academic workload is also high with 60% Math and 40% CS courses.
Now, here are a few points that might convince you to join IIT Indore instead
- IIT Indore qualified for ACM-ICPC World Finals thrice. This in itself is quite an achievement considering this event's importance.
- As per HackerRank, IIT Indore is said to have the best coders in the whole country. Additionally, it’s at the 8th position globally for the best coders
- IIT Indore has an extensive alumni base who completed their Master's from top foreign universities like Stanford, Caltech, University of Columbia. Many talented alumni also increase the credibility of the institute by working at reputed firms like Google and Facebook.
- This year, the CS department recorded 100% placements with the highest and average packages standing at INR 48.5 LPA and INR 30.32 LPA respectively.
Overall, IIT Indore CSE is a much better choice than MnC IIT Guwahati considering the work of and job opportunities.
Do only toppers get hostels in IIT Indore?
No, everyone gets a hostel accommodation at IIT Indore and it's not only the toppers who get hostels here. However, there is a kind of distinction in the facilities offered to them. The normal students get facilities such as

Is it worth it to complete an M.Tech. from IIT Indore?
Here, your hard work matters more if you are highly determined and strive enough in your studies by utilizing the facilities offered at IIT Indore. Then it is worth completing an M.Tech. with high grades. In most colleges, post-graduation is a self-learning process, and the professors from IIT Indore will support you with effective guidance. They also have the best placement support, and IITI is advancing every year.

IIT Indore CSE placements are great and this year too the branch managed to secure 100% placements. The average package stood at INR 30.32 LPA while the highest stood at INR 48.5 LPA which was the second highest after Electrical. The top companies visiting the campus are

What should I choose: IIT Indore CSE or BITS Pilani EEE?
When faced with a similar situation different people make different choices. There is no right choice as it’s a matter of personal preference. IIT Indore CSE and BITS Pilani EEE are both lucrative options and thus only your personal choices can determine the right one.
There are some who wish to grab the IIT tag and want to take CS because the branch is a major crowd-puller. While some want to experience the brand and prestige of the old BITS Pilani.
I would suggest you go for IIT Indore as the small batch size has its own benefits and moreover, IIT Indore has been growing quickly and seems to give more promising results in the future. The small batch size gives the vibe of a small family and you will love the bond here. BITS Pilani on the other hand has its own aura with Meritocracy as the mantra but its high fees are a major issue.
Both the institutes are equally good and choosing one of the other wouldn’t be a regretful decision.
