How good is NIT Jamshedpur? Why is its ranking poor?

SD
Sumona Dasgupta Posted On : April 13th, 2023
Bachelors of technology at National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur

While NIT Jamshedpur has not scored well in the ranking criteria set by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), there are several factors that make it a good choice for students. Here's what you need to know:

  • Ranking criteria: MHRD uses various parameters such as research paper publications, students to teachers ratio, infrastructure, and other factors to rank engineering colleges. Unfortunately, NIT Jamshedpur lags behind in most of these areas. However, it's important to note that rankings are not the only indicator of a good college.
  • Infrastructure: Despite its low ranking, NIT Jamshedpur is improving its infrastructure day by day. It currently has two mega hostels with a mega mess that is well-maintained. The construction of a new lecture hall complex is ongoing, and the renovation of the Computer Science and Engineering department is also underway.
  • Placement: One of the best things about NIT Jamshedpur is its placement scenario. The placement percentage is excellent, and almost every student gets placed in their final year, except for those who choose to prepare for other competitive exams such as GATE or CAT. Being situated in an industrial city like Jamshedpur, the institute has an edge over its peers in terms of placement opportunities. If you work hard during your time at NIT Jamshedpur, you can land your dream job with a good salary package.
  • Average package: The average salary package of NIT Jamshedpur graduates does not justify its low MHRD ranking. This means that even though the college has not scored well in the ranking criteria, it still produces highly skilled and employable engineers who get placed in well-reputed companies.

While NIT Jamshedpur may not have a good MHRD ranking, it still offers a lot of benefits to its students, such as improving infrastructure, excellent placement opportunities, and high salary packages. If you are ready to put in the hard work, you can make the most of the opportunities that NIT Jamshedpur has to offer and build a successful career in engineering.

Does ragging happen at NIT Jamshedpur?

SR
Sabarajit Roy Posted On : April 20th, 2021
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur (2019)

No, there is no ragging happening at NIT Jamshedpur. I have one of my cousins study at NIT Jamshedpur. I can tell you the ragging scenario there.

Seniors of NIT Jamshedpur are very helpful. But you must not misbehave with your seniors. They only visit freshers class when there is some important information to convey.

As a fresher, you may face a little difficulty while sports meet. You have to be in the parade group if you are not participating in games seriously. It turns out to be tough for students who cannot get up early in the cold morning. Seniors will call you for exercising on a cold morning. However, sports practice should not skip as they are as important as your academics.

You can have fun with seniors without getting rude. It is okay to have fun with them.

Therefore, you can join NIT Jamshedpur without any worries as no ragging has taken place till now.

What are some of craziest stories that you have heard of NIT Jamshedpur?

TD

Studied at NIT Jamshedpur (2019)

Here are some of the craziest stories of NIT Jamshedpur.

  1. Prof. Akhilesh Kumar used to be the HOD of the ECE department. My friend went to his chamber for some work. He was tensed about something on his desktop and replied that he is unable to log in to his email ID as there is no option of password entering. The HOD didn’t know how to reload the page so my friend asked him if he could help. When he came near the PC, he saw that the HOD was trying to enter his email in the Google search field, not Gmail.
  2. Once there was a HOD of a department who didn’t come to class and on being asked he stated some lines of a saint that he can’t teach people who know more than him, thus making the students speechless. He although took a class in the last semester. He just took a piece of paper out of his pocket and started writing on the blackboard. He drew an incident ray getting reflected off the surface and the angle at which the ray was incident at the surface (not the perpendicular) was marked angle-i (and same for angle-r). Some students pointed out the mistake but he did not care and walked out of class with glory.

There many more such crazy stories about NIT Jamshedpur.

Which is best: NIT Durapur, NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Raipur, IIIT Jabalpur and IIIT Kancheepuram? I'm interested in electrical, electronics and computer science.

All the aforementioned institutes namely NIT Jamshedpur, NIT Raipur, IIIT Jabalpur, and IIIT Kancheepuram are good in their own way. They have their own strengths and weaknesses. The choice between these will thereby depend on personal preferences like distance from your home, the placements-branch-wise, and internship opportunities.

Now choosing the branch can be a bit tricky as BTech students have no idea of what exactly they are going to study. Choosing the branch is a blind bet and often many regret their choice later. That being said, if you are confused between electrical, electronics, and computer science then consider the following points

  • Go for CSE if your goal is to secure a high package in software and don’t want to spend much time studying.
  • Go for EEE if you want to work less and secure a stable average job.
  • Go for ECE if are interested in electronics and want to pursue a career in the same.

Out of these ECE is the most challenging with the least opportunities while CSE is the easiest with a plethora of opportunities.

How is M.Tech in CSE from NIT Jamshedpur?

AC
Aryaa Chatterjee Posted On : April 20th, 2021

NIT Jamshedpur, for any student, can be a good choice. However, it can be a good choice only if there is no further option left. In all the options that you have, the first try you should ever have is to enroll in IITs. On the other hand, if not IITs, then your second try should at least be for absolutely any tier-I NITs, such as the ones in the South.

Although, when you run out of your choices between institutions like IITs and tier-I NITs, then choosing NIT Jamshedpur as your last option is not considered overall a very bad choice.

NIT Jamshedpur is an institute that comes with brand value, which mainly is its USP. It is fundamentally well renowned across everyone for the CSE department, which has rather earned its name for being the most sought branch in the whole institution.

However, when speaking of the placement reports, it speaks otherwise. This means the overall placement record for almost all the branches in the institution is not highly praised. But, the improvement in the placement reports is somehow seen to climb the upper side recently.

Companies like INTEl have recently been known to select 25 students from M.Tech for certain internship opportunities, among which 12 students already belong to the CSE specializations.

After dropping 2 years I got an admission in NIT Jamshedpur in the CSE branch. Will it affect the placements?

KC
Kasturi Chatterjee Posted On : April 20th, 2021
Studied CSE at NIT Jamshedpur (2019)

When it comes down to whether or not a decision affects your placement, it, first of all, depends on how you have prepared and put effort into your studies. If you have not put much effort into your studies and have rather studied in an unresponsive and impassive manner, then a bulk of companies actually rejecting you is more obvious.

If you want to pursue your goal and more often than not, have prepared to not let any individual material affect you, then these are ways you can aim with:

  1. Aim for your Academia: You should have a checklist of several professors from various other universities who can lend a hand in providing you research-oriented topics to further work on during your summer breaks. This is one way by which you can aim at greater selection, only if you stand out in the project.
  2. Aim for a Lucrative Job: You should always aim to participate in different algorithmic contests and contribute to your open source. It will help build a reputation and can gain you exposure in the industrial side. It also will help see the capability to sit through various contests or examinations and stand out with solving numerous demanding questions. This is another way recruiters will find you as a great asset to their company.

Other than that, you can always go up for management and courses other than the one stated above. It however depends completely on you.

Which is better, NIT Jamshedpur or NIT Silchar?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : September 4th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

NIT Silchar is definitely better than NIT Jamshedpur in all possible aspects. I am not saying this just because it's ranked much higher than NIT Jamshedpur, but NIT Silchar's research culture and placement statistics are way better than NIT Jamshedpur. Despite operating from a place where there are issues related to communication, transportation, and development, it has become one of the top NITs. The students are left in awe of the beauty of the campus.

I will suggest never comparing colleges on the basis of placements alone. N that case many private colleges have better placements yet people run after IITs and NITs because of the brand value, the crowd, the legacy, and the research activities. It's a well-known institute among the faculty and students of top IITs. The Director Prof. S. Bandyopadhyay is working on improving the institute's reputation by holding many national and international events.

Refer to the table below for a brief comparison
