What is the most useless branch at NIT, Rourkela?

AK
Ashish Kumar Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2019)

I don't think there is a single useless branch at NIT Rourkela or at any institute. The diverse branches aim at catering to the needs of all kinds of students. So a branch that is useless for you might be useful for someone else and vice versa. Moreover, if a branch seems to be useless then it's because its students are not passionate enough to make the most out of it. Comparing branches can also result in this preconceived notion of a rank being inferior to the other.

It's always better to find solutions than to complain. Rather than declaring a specific branch to be useless, we should identify its weaknesses and work on them for instance, one of my friends found his branch to be below average and he along with his batchmates used to sit and single out companies that could hire them they even talked to the professors regarding the changes that coil be made in the curriculum to make the course more appealing and informative.

I believe once you start focusing on gaining knowledge rather than earning money, you won't find a single branch useless. Yes, a branch can provide lesser job opportunities than other branches but that does not make it useless.

Is NIT Rourkela worth being ranked as 2nd best NIT (as per MHRD Rankings 2017)?

SV
Sudeeksha Verma Posted On : August 14th, 2023
B.Tech from National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

Currently, NIT Rourkela is ranked as the 3rd best NIT after NIT Trichy and NIT Karnataka as per the MHRD rankings 2023. Now, before determining if NIT Rourkela is worth being ranked so highly, we need to know what criteria make up an MHRD ranking

  • Infrastructure : NIT Rourkela has a huge and serene campus with some of the best campus facilities. It’s said to have the best infrastructure among other engineering colleges.
  • Curriculum: Most national institutes have a similar curriculum where the branch-specific courses are introduced from the 2nd year. NIT Rourkela's curriculum may not be the best but is certainly well-structured.
  • Research papers : NIT Rourkela has an active research culture and has produced almost an equal number of papers and a thesis like IITKGP. This is one of the major reasons for its high rankings.
  • Numbers of courses: NIT Rourkela has a diverse range of courses from several BTech programs to PhD programs.
  • Placements: This is where NIT Rourkela has to step back because of its poor location.

So yes, NIT Rourkela very much deserves the high ranking it gets considering its excellent infrastructure, curriculum, and research opportunities.

How is ragging at NIT Rourkela?

SM
Saumita Mitra Posted On : January 21st, 2022
MA Development Studies, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2020)

Ragging is strictly prohibited at NIT Rourkela. The institute has a number of measures to eliminate ragging. Since ragging usually takes place at hostels, first-year boys are allotted exclusively in GDV/MV Halls of residence. Seniors aren’t allowed to enter the first-year hostels. Other than these, there are also a few other effective measures in place to curb ragging.

Which among BIT Mesra and NIT Rourkela is better?

AB
Akriti Banerjee Posted On : August 9th, 2023
lives in New Delhi

One of my friends is a student of BIT Mesra and yet claims that joining NIT Rourkela would have been a better decision. He regrets choosing BIT Mesra because

  • Very adamant and unapproachable administration that does not pay heed to students' complaints.
  • The campus has poor infrastructural facilities and students constantly face issues related to water, electricity, and network
  • The faculty pool comprises only a handful of qualified professors and most of them are not interested in teaching.
  • The institute has imposed illogical restrictions that affect the quality of campus life largely.
  • The institute charges exorbitantly high fees making it difficult for financially weak students to join.

Overall, I will say BIT Mesra offers a good academic environment but that is it. It lacks a vibrant college life so if you are looking for one, choose NIT Rourkela!

How is the chemical engineering department at NIT Rourkela?

AB
Ankita Bhattacharya Posted On : January 15th, 2022
B.Tech Chemical Engineering & American Chemical Society, National Institute of Technology, Rourkela (2021)

According to the student’s reviews online, you should not opt for chemical engineering at NIT Rourkela.

Here are some reasons as to why:

  • The faculty of the department is not good, they are mostly new at their jobs and have very little educational experience.
  • They focus more on theoretical learning than practicals.
  • They prefer when students mug up theories rather than understanding them in depth.
  • The teachers sometimes give so many assignments that it becomes impossible to complete them in time.
  • There is a lot of communication gap between students and teachers.

Lastly, the placement scenario of this department is bad. Most of the students are going into the IT sector and a very few got recruited in core industries and many students did not even receive placement offers.

So considering everything it is suggested you do not pursue chemical engineering at NIT Rourkela.

How is biotechnology at NIT Rourkela?

PJ
Prateek Jha Posted On : August 14th, 2023
NIT Rourkela (2016)

One of my friends recently completed Biotechnology at NIT Rourkela and shared his experience of the same.

  • The Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering is relatively new so you shouldn’t expect very high packages like other branches.
  • Companies like TCS, IBM, Infosys, and a few analytics companies make offers to students of this branch but the selection process is very challenging.
  • The curriculum of this branch is not at par with industry standards and is a major reason for poor demand. This limits the opportunities for the students to a great extent.
  • The professors are very rigid and adopt a very tough grading system. They don’t motivate you to try any creative stuff and only force you to mug up the theoretical concepts.
  • The professors are underqualified and some even lack a Bachelor's degree from top colleges like NITs, IITs, or other universities

Overall, the branch should be considered unless you are specifically inclined towards it and have no expectations of high packages.

How are the placements of the mechanical branch at NIT Rourkela?

NT
Nivedita Trivedi Posted On : August 14th, 2023
NIT Rourkela (2020)

The placement scenario of the Mechanical branch of NIT Rourkela is great. Many core companies like Tata Steel, Vedanta, Tata Motors, Maruti - Suzuki, Mahindra & Mahindra visit the campus to recruit talented students as Graduate engineer Trainees.

A few PSUs also visit NIT Rourkela to recruit students from one of the best NITs in the country. For instance, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL) visited the institute and recruited 4 Mechanical Engineering students. The core companies offer average packages of around INR 8 LPA.

Most students have to go for Analytics, Consultancy, and IT sectors due to limited opportunities in the Mechanical branch. Companies like TCS, Mu Sigma, Infosys, etc recruit such students.

Overall, the placement scenario of ME at NIT Rourkela might not be excellent but it is quite satisfactory.

Which is the best department of NIT Rourkela?

SB
Sriparna Banerjee Posted On : August 17th, 2023
Studied at National Institute of Technology, Rourkela

My brother is pursuing his B.Tech Electrical from NIT Rourkela. Sometimes he feels that he made a mistake by choosing Electrical over CSE because of the popularity of the latter.

However, he soon overcomes these thoughts. This is because Electrical has a really good scope on a global scale. Even if he doesn’t land a dream job through placements, the option of higher studies is always open for him. The curriculum of Electrical includes topics from allied branches- ECE and CSE. Unlike the popular belief among NIT Rourkela students, Electrical is not just about electrical machines and power systems. Microprocessors, Embedded Systems, Signal Processing, Communication Engineering, Measurements and Instrumentation are all included in the Electrical curriculum.

B.Tech Electrical has a very interdisciplinary nature wherein you will not learn about one specific arena, but, the curriculum will allow you to understand what really interests you. You can then pursue your higher studies in your field of interest. B.Tech Electrical is so flexible that it allows you to migrate to almost any other engineering field that you want.

I would highly recommend B.Tech Electrical if you have a passionate interest in Maths and Physics. Also, a PG in this branch will allow you to truly understand its nuances and become a specialist in this field. Thus, Electrical is the best department at NIT Rourkela according to me.
