What is your review of SVNIT Surat?

YG
Yogita Goswami Posted On : January 3rd, 2024
B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at SVNIT

My review of SVNIT is a mixed one. It is a good choice in almost every aspect other than sports.

For sports enthusiasts, SVNIT is not the right choice. The condition of sports facilities at our college is not good. The sports grounds are not in a good shape. The cricket/football ground becomes a grassland from July to December.

The indoor badminton courts, which are two in number, are immensely insufficient to cater to around 4000 students. Each one has to wait a long time for their turn, and is given around 10 minutes to play the sport. Such a huge number of students can not access the badminton courts for sufficient durations. MMNCT is the best sports event of the year. It is an inter-year cricket tournament that takes place at night. The gym is well designed and has all the modern equipment.

Many classes are boring. But a lot of the professors, especially in the Civil department, teach really well. The marking system is very transparent, and after 15-30 days post the exams, answer sheets are made available for students to have a look. The classrooms are also very school-like in appearance. The rules are lenient, and most teachers are satisfied with a 60% student attendance.

The location is quite good, and malls, theaters, etc. are easily accessible. The campus is located in a posh area of Surat. Places like Mumbai, Daman, etc. are easily accessible for getaways. The placements are top notch, the clubs are plenty and quite decent. The mess food is quite good as well.

Unless you are very serious about getting the best sports facilities, SVNIT is a good college. But for sports facilities, I would recommend you try for MNIT Jaipur.

How is SVNIT Surat as compared to other NITs?

AA
Aarti Ahuja Posted On : January 3rd, 2024
Lives in Ahmedabad

SVNIT is not among the top NITs overall, but it is considered among the top 10 NITs for its Mechanical Engineering branch.

Infrastructure-wise, it has one of the best hostel facilities among premiere technical institutions. The new classroom complex is well-built, and it offers a great learning experience. The central library has been re-built, replacing the older building, and it is really good. Some of the departments have been shifted to new buildings with state of the art facilities. The college cafeteria serves affordable fast food, and the campus has decent sports facilities.

The campus is situated at a prime location of Surat city, very close to the airport. The Athwalines area is one of the poshest localities of Surat. The area houses good food joints, and Surat is quite a popular destination for foodies. The city is located close to Mumbai, Pune, Baroda and Ahmedabad, and has its own industries as well. Thus, the location of SVNIT greatly aids its placements.

The faculty is helpful and friendly, but the effort will have to come from your side. You can expect to score well in the exams with decent efforts. The environment is positive, and research facilities are decent.

Based on these factors, one can assess that SVNIT is a good college. It beats the other NITs in many aspects.

How is the SVNIT Campus?

SVNIT is one of the few NITs with a campus in the city center. Malls, shops, and movie theaters are all located within a 2 km radius.

The campus is covered in greenery, and the CRC lawns are perfect to sit and relax. The lake and its adjacent garden are on the side, separated by a wall. The campus roads are well constructed.

The infrastructure has been recently renewed and provided with top-notch facilities. Fresher classes are conducted in the huge new CRC building that has glass walls. The senior students study in their respective departments. The hostel facility is average. The sports facilities are also average, but the gym is quite good. Freshers can't access the gym facility.

The campus of SVNIT is good, though there’s always room for improvement. I would recommend you go through some online pictures to get a better idea.

Unlike other NIT campuses, the SVNIT campus is located in the main city. Other NITs are generally located on the outskirts of the main cities. Here are some details about SVNIT.

  • Any basic requirement that concerns your stationary or entertainment can promptly be fulfilled as everything is covered within 2 kilometers of radius.
  • The campus will never disappoint you as, like any other IIT/NIT, the SVNIT campus is adorned with greenery all around
  • Previously, the lake present near the campus used to be a part of the campus too, but now the authorities have constructed a wall dividing the lake and the campus.
  • There are no bus or shuttle services inside the campus as it is relatively smaller. But the roads are pretty decent. Several people come inside the campus for morning walks.
  • New CRC buildings are where classes are conducted for the first years. The infrastructure is excellent.
  • Old classes carry on in the old departments as it is.
  • Old and new hostels are present on the campus. Third and fourth-year students stay in the new hostels.
  • A ground is present on the campus too where students prefer to play cricket and football. But since it is not maintained that often. Also, two basketball and tennis courts are present on the campus.
  • As far as indoor games are concerned, there are two table tennis and badminton courts. A gym is also present, but it is restricted for the first years.
  • Staff bungalows are appealing. Behind that, there is the girl's hostel.
  • For financial services, there is a post-office and SBI branch present on the campus too.

This should give you an idea about the SVNIT campus. You can find the photos of the campus on the official website.

NIT Surathkal is better than Delhi engineering colleges like NSIT, DTU and IIIT Delhi because it offers a more diverse experience. Here are a few aspects to consider

  • Reputation : NIT Surathkal enjoys the status of being an Institute of National importance and is fully funded by the Central government whereas DTU, NSIT, and IIITD are state government universities
  • Research culture: NIT Surathkal has a rich research culture and facilities and is one of the institutes which is selected for funding from HEFA
  • Academics : NIT Surathkal is a clear winner as its academic environment and curriculum are way better than Delhi colleges. Every year many students win International awards.
  • Campus life: NIT Surathkal has a private beach with a lush green campus of 300 acres. Moreover, its crowd is much more diverse than Delhi colleges which have 85% quota for Delhites.
  • Location : Situated near the IT hub, Bangalore NIT Surathkal students are exposed to more opportunities and a better IT environment. Many Bangalore IT companies give preference to NITK Surathkal students.
  • Placements : NIT Surathkal achieves 100% placement and has a better variety of recruiters than Delhi colleges.
  • Coding Culture: NIT Surathkal has received good rankings in the ICPC Asia Contest and every year many students are selected for Google Summer of Code.
  • ROI : NIT Surathkal offers a better ROI because it charges lesser fees than NSIT, DTU, and IIIT Delhi.

So, it's safe to say NIT Surathkal is a much better option than Delhi colleges.

Is there any Ragging in SVNIT?

AS
Amit Sharma Posted On : January 4th, 2024
Studied at NIT Surat

Ragging has practically disappeared from the SVNIT campus. This is because of strict rules and regulations against ragging, made by the college authorities and the country’s lawmakers.

It is beneficial to reach out to your seniors and seek their advice in various matters related to the hostel and college. Being a new student means that you’ll need someone for advice on books, notes, and even the best places to hangout.

It is important to keep in mind that your seniors are no beasts, rather they are students just like you. The seniors might ask for your name, school, and other details. But this is in no way ragging. They do that to know you better and develop a friendly bond with you. There are some seniors who’ll be friendly with you, while others won’t bother at all.

So don’t worry about ragging, and try to develop a healthy bond with your seniors. They’ll be of great help to you in navigating through your engineering degree.

Shrinivas Arkatar sir from the Civil Engineering department is quite famous among students. He has in-depth knowledge about transportation. He has a unique way of setting questions. The questions usually have all the required formulas but it's so mindful that most students get confused.

Amit Solanki sir is also quite reputed among the Civil students. His teaching style is unique. He has a way of connecting things from day-to-day life to the subjects he teaches.

Students also love attending the lectures of YD Patil Sir, C.D. Modhera Sir, Praveen Rathod Sir.

B.Tech Mechanical Engineering at SVNIT

The following facilities are available for students at the SVNIT hostels-

  • Basic Facilities- Every student is given a bed, a mattress, a bedsheet, a chair, a study table, a cupboard with door lock and a pillow with a cover.

The hostels have proper WiFi and LAN Connectivity. There are common washrooms with geysers in the hostels. Every hostel room has a fan, a light bulb  and electricity ports. Unfortunately, there is no facility for coolers or air  conditioners. Moreover, the installation of coolers inside hostel rooms is not permitted as well.

  • Other Facilities- Other than the hostel mess, there are night canteens. There is a laundry service as well. There is a Volleyball court and a TT room within the boys’ hostel premise. The hostels have a reading room along with a library.

There is a TV room, and one can easily access newspapers and magazines. The premises have a parking for bicycles and a Computer room (CCF). The entire hostel area is covered with CCTV surveillance. Hair salons are available inside the hostel area.

These are the facilities available at the SVNIT hostels. Although there aren’t any cooler/ AC facilities, you’ll enjoy your stay at this institution.

What is the meaning of back semester, back log etc. at SVNIT? What are its consequences?

JS
Jay Shah Posted On : January 3rd, 2024
studied at Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat

Semester back and backlog are two different things. Here is the detailed information on this topic-

  • Semester back- A semester back implies that the person is not allowed to enter the next semester. There are a few reasons for semester back. These are-
  1. The person failed to fulfill the minimum 75% attendance criteria. Medical is accepted only for 60% and above attendance category students.
  2. A person with a backlog from 1st year can’t enter his/her 3rd year, and someone with a backlog in the 2nd year can’t enter his/her 4th year.
  3. Someone with 3 or more backlogs can not enter the next year.

The criteria changes from year to year, so make sure to keep a check on that.

Everyone is given a chance to clear their backlogs during the summer semester.

The rules keep changing with time, so it is better to keep yourself updated on the

latest rules regarding backlogs.

  • Backlog- A subject backlog means having failed in that subject in the end semester exams. In this case, two mark sheets are issued for that semester, the second one mentions the total number of attempts.

In case you are trapped in any of these situations, do not panic. Try to clear your backlogs. Do not be disheartened and remember that things will eventually get better.
