My friend studied at IIEST Shibpur but it was a long time ago. The quality of pedagogy back then was good, however now one can't say much of it. Also personally, CS does not have the best faculty in AMU.

If you wish to compare the state of teaching in the institutions, just log in to the official website and go through the qualifications of the faculty members. Check both the academic achievements of the faculty in general, as well as that of the departments.

If you live near Shibpur then it'll be easier to commute, however, if you live far away then you can choose AMU. You must note that IIEST Shibpur's IT department might have to shut down and you may regret your decision during placements.

Without a doubt, IIEST Shibpur is the definite better choice among the two institutes for Civil Engineering and is indeed one of the best Civil Engineering departments in the country. My friends who study at IIEST Shibpur boast about their college, that it is great in so many ways.

• The Civil Engineering department of IIEST Shibpur is the best department among all engineering institutes in India.
• IIEST is a national government-controlled institute, and its curriculum and structure are mostly managed by the central board.
• In IIEST, candidates can switch departments at the end of the first year through the stream change process. For this shift, they need a good GPA score in exams.
• Civil Engineers of IIEST Shibpur have excelled in their field everywhere, and have excellent worldwide recognition.
• Some of the alumni are among the world leaders of engineering. Ex- Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan, who was the designer of the Willis Tower in the USA, Dr. Kajal Gupta, Chief Scientist and Technologist of NASA, USA.

Therefore, Civil Engineering in IIEST Shibpur is at its best among almost all the Civil Engineering departments in India and so is definitely a great choice.

It is critical to understand the market's demands, you have to examine every aspect properly.

• Faculty: Hire the best in the market who have good credentials and have good experience in particular fields.
• Placement coordinator: A placement coordinator serves as the link between the college and the industry.

Yes, you can change your branch from metallurgy to ECE after the 1st year. At IIEST Shibpur only 20% of students in each branch are given that choice except the architecture branch. There are the following conditions for changing branches:

1. You should not have past records of failure supplementary or re-admission.
2. You should not have any record of disciplinary action in the college.
3. Your dues should be clear to date.
4. This scheme is restricted to 5% of the total seats available in the various branches.
5. The reduction in the number of students in each branch should not go below 10% after the relocation.
6. You should have a good CGPA in the last semester. It should be above 8.4 points in the metallurgical department.

Allocations are given on the basis of the above conditions and if there is a tie between two students then the tie is broken through the CGPA marks in physics, chemistry, and math. One who has the highest marks gets the seat.

The B.Tech course offered by IIIT Jabalpur in Computer Science and Engineering is not good. The placement report is not that impressive. There are very few faculty members available for CSE at present in that institute according to one of my friends who recently graduated from this college.

On the other hand, IT in IIEST can be a pretty good option if you want to make it big. The infrastructure of the college is quite good. Students get the option to grab good internships. Microsoft hires from the campus. The diversity of students and faculty members present at the College is also good.

Earlier IIEST Shibpur used to be the best Civil and Structural Engineering Institute in Asia including the IITs. Here are some of the things that you should know about the institute.

• The World Famous Professor of Applied Mechanics, Dr.Young of Stanford University in the USA taught on this campus for 5 years.

• The previous graduates of IIEST are some of the big achievers. The world's greatest Structural Engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan USA studied in Shibpur Campus.
• Dr. Kajal Gupta, Chief Technologist at NASA, USA is another brilliant Engineer from the same college.
• Large numbers of eminent Civil & Structural Engineers are spread all over the World in the USA/ UK/ Canada/ UAE from this college.

IIEST Shibpur is definitely a good choice for M.Tech in Civil.

I have some friends at IIEST Shibpur and NIT Rourkela and based on what I heard from them, I will suggest that you choose the former. Here is why.

• NIT Rourkela offers placement opportunities. Also, the companies that visit NIT R are more reputed.
• Very few companies offer pre-placement offers to IIEST as compared to NIT R.
• Many reputed companies have blacklisted IIEST Shibpur. Job opportunities available at the campus are quite low. Only a few mass recruiters like TCS, Accenture, Infosys visit the placement drive.
• Also, securing a placement through off-campus placement will be quite challenging. You will have to have impressive coding skills to get recruited through off-campus placements.

Go for IIEST, only if you are interested in doing research further, you can make some good contact there which will be helpful. But from a placement point of view, NIT R will be better for a CSE course.

One of my friends attends IIEST and here is his insight regarding cutoffs.

Your rank in JEE mains seems to be 5-6k more than the cutoff borderline for receiving admission into Metallurgy and Materials Engineering. According to the recent cutoff trends, the required cutoff for Metallurgy and Material Engineering are as follows.

• Home State- 26837-29720
• Outer State- 19784-28592

It would be difficult to get in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering with your rank. Your admissions in any branch are never guaranteed solely on the basis of cutoffs as the cutoffs drastically change in the case of JEE. The cutoffs provided are an approximation of your field of choice.

There are various events and activities occasionally held right from the time you join IIEST Shibpur. I have some idea about the events since I have a few friends studying there. Here are some of the events of IIEST.

• The first year typically focuses on quiz sessions at the beginning of the academic year. It is mainly, as many consider, a process for enlisting in the quiz club.
• In the first year, the students enjoy one cultural program, known as the Novus Initium.
• If you are anyhow interested in sports, then you can try enlisting in the sports society at the athletic department.
• There is the inclusion of another society, known as the Robodarshan Society which apparently is a Robotics Club.
• If you are interested in music or relevant branches of it, then you can join the society named, Euphony.
• For anything related to dramas and plays, then the courtesy goes mainly to Les Thespians.
• There are regular programming sessions conducted and opened to all. It is hosted by CodeIIEST.
• Alongside these, the annual techno-management fest, namely Instruo, conducts various sorts of competitions as well.
• The cultural fest mainly held in the campus is called “Rebeca.”

These are to name a few of them. There are several more, like Gyandhara which is a quiz festival hosted by Quizmania Beings, where you do not necessarily have to be part of the institute to participate. Udbhabani (Civil), Metallum (Metallurgy), Initium (Mining) are various of the departmental fests of IIEST, Shibpur.
