New Delhi: Approximately 200 students petitioned the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) Faculty vice-chancellor for menstrual leaves on International Women's Day. Despite this, the institution's administration stated adherence to government holiday policies due to its central funding, precluding a decision at the institutional level.
A year prior, TISS students proposed relaxing attendance requirements for those advocating period leave through the Progressive Students' Forum (PSF). A poll afterwards revealed that over 91% of students favoured the introduction of period leaves. The TISS student union supported this demand and communicated it to the administration.
In a statement, PSF President Anagha A and General Secretary Lagan Mangla urged the administration to establish an expert committee to review attendance policies and institute period leave, fostering a gender-sensitive and inclusive campus environment. They highlighted that over 15 universities across India have already embraced period leave policies.
In the third phase of the campaign this February, a week-long letter initiative took place, with numerous students participating to advocate for period leaves on the TISS campus. A senior official from the TISS administration explained, "As a centrally-funded institute, we adhere to government policies concerning holidays.
