New Delhi: Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) has announced that it will soon submit a proposal to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the launching of its first student satellite 'Thaparsat' to monitor pollution in north India.

The satellite has been constructed under the ‘Thaparsat Satellite Program’ by TIET and is in the final stages of testing. ‘Thaparsat’ has been built to monitor real-time pollution caused by greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide and to measure soil moisture content in Punjab and other northern regions of India. A team of 25 students and six faculty members from different engineering backgrounds at TIET have built the satellite.

The ‘Thaparsat’ program was launched four years ago to offer experiential education to students, focusing on engineering and technological development in satellite construction and space missions.

To celebrate the achievement, TIET recently organised a half-day symposium on “ThaparSAT: An Initiative of TIET towards Future of Space Program in Punjab State” at its campus.

RR Vaderah, TIET chairman, and other officials congratulated the Thapar Satellite Programme team led by Professor Mamata Gulati. The symposium discussed the importance of Thaparsat in future policy-making for agricultural development in the state, the need for start-ups in the space technology sector in the Punjab region, and capacity building in colleges.

The symposium also saw the participation of several dignitaries of Punjab, including GS Majithia, member secretary, Punjab Pollution Control Board; Dapinder Bakshi, joint director, Punjab State Council for Science and Technology; Brijendra Pateria, director, Punjab Remote Sensing Center and Jaswinder Singh, CAO, Department of Agriculture, among other officials.
