Tata Steel CEO TV Narendran Appointed as Chairperson of IIT Kharagpur

New Delhi: TV Narendran, the CEO and Managing Director of Tata Steel Limited, has been appointed for the role of Chairperson of the Board of Governors at IIT Kharagpur. 

With a wealth of more than three decades (34 years of experience) of expertise in the mining and metals sector, TV Narendran holds a degree in mechanical engineering from NIT Trichy and an MBA from IIM Calcutta. 

Virendra K Tewari, the director of IIT Kharagpur, extended a warm welcome to Narendran upon his appointment. He expressed that he looks forward to Mr. Narendran's capable guidance, valuable ideas, and supportive motivation in the process of shaping the institute to meet its future aspirations.

Noting Narendran's strong technical and industrial background, he acknowledged his comprehension of societal needs and the practical implications of integrating industry and academia within a technical institution. 

Tewari conveyed an expectation for Narendran's skillful guidance, positive ideas, and supportive motivation in the institute's efforts to reshape itself according to its future goals.

About TV Narendran; the New Chairperson of Board of Governors at IIT Kharagpur 

Following his completion of an MBA from IIM Calcutta in 1988, Mr. Narendran promptly joined Tata Steel. He commenced his journey in the International Trading Division, where he remained until 1997. 

During this period, he dedicated five years in Dubai, overseeing Tata Steel's exports to the Middle East. Between 1997 and 2001, he shifted his focus to Tata Steel's marketing and sales division, contributing to market development initiatives for projects like the Cold Rolling Mill, Supply Chain Management, and Sales Planning. 

The years spanning 2001 to 2003 recorded him hold the position of Chief of Marketing & Sales (Long Products), a role instrumental in shaping the 'Tata Tiscon' brand and its distribution network. 

From 2003 to 2005, he operated as the Principal Executive Officer to B. Muthuraman, the then Managing Director of Tata Steel. Subsequently, on 1 November 2013, he ascended to the role of Managing Director for Tata Steel India and South East Asia.

Having previously held the position of Vice President for the Safety & Flat Products Divisions of Tata Steel, Narendran currently holds board memberships at Tata Steel Limited, Tata Steel Europe, CEDEP, XLRI, and the World Steel Association. He was bestowed with the Life Fellow Award in 2022 during the 68th Convocation of the Institute, which took place on December 24, 2022.

Mr. Narendran holds positions within the Executive Committee and the Board of the World Steel Association. He fulfilled the role of co-chair for the Mining & Metals Governor Council of the World Economic Forum from 2016 to 2018. 

Moreover, he assumed the presidency of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) from 2021 to 2022. Having received Distinguished Alumnus Awards from both NIT Trichy and IIM Calcutta, he boasts the title of a Chevening Scholar and has also completed the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD, France.

The institute expressesd its gratitude for the exceptional contributions made by Dr. R P Singh, the outgoing Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Kharagpur. 

Dr. Singh highlighted the importance of research that advances community outreach and fosters societal development through strong industry partnerships. His valuable insights, guidance, and practicality will be held in the highest esteem.
