President Murmu Launches India’s First CAR-T Cell Therapy for Cancer Treatment at IIT Bombay

New Delhi: The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu launched India’s first homegrown new gene therapy for cancer on April 04, 2024. The new treatment, which is IIT Bombay’s own version of CAR-T cell therapy, is a pathbreaking addition to the fight against cancer. The treatment was created jointly by IIT Bombay, Tata Memorial Hospital, and ImmunoACT.

President Murmu praised IIT Bombay’s CAR-T cell therapy for its “accessible and affordable” nature and its ability to save lives through homegrown therapy. A launch event was held for the discovery, in which President Murmu spoke about the new treatment created by IIT Bombay.

Although CAR-T cell therapy itself is not a new phenomenon, IIT Bombay’s development of their own indigenous treatment certainly brings down the cost of the treatment, as opposed to the cost of getting the treatment in other countries.
