New Delhi: In the last 5 years, IITs are getting PhD applications largely from all social categories. The Centre in Parliament has shown records that amongst the aspirants, applications from candidates from disadvantaged communities have risen a bit more than others.

As per reports, in the years 2017-18 and 2021-22, applications from Scheduled Caste (SC) backgrounds have risen for the PhD applications. In the 23 IITs, the digit rose from 12,476 to 17,814. The number of applications has also risen from the Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities from 2,132 to 3,461. 

Applications from OBC categories have risen from 27,734 to 40,418, and for the general category, the figure has increased from 68,663 to 74,343. 

When CPI(M) member Sivadasan raised a question on July 20, the Ministry of Education shared these records in the Rajya Sabha. 

But the report has also stated that the acceptance rate has shown no major changes. In 2017-18, the acceptance rate for the SC community was 3.2% and in 2021-22 it is 4.4%. The acceptance rate for ST candidates in 2017-18 was 4.2% and in 2021-22 it is 4.01%. 

The acceptance rate for OBC was 4.2% in 2017-18 and in 2021-22 it is 3.3%, and the general category acceptance rate has been the same at 4.5%

Hence, in the period between 2017-18 and 2021-22, IITs have accepted 17,044 PhD applications where SC, ST, OBC and general category students stood at 9.3%, 2.2% and 23.3% and 61.6%, respectively. 

On July 18, responding to a question raised by CPI(M) member S Venkatesan, according to a written response, the biases against these communities were deeper than the overall average in 2021. IIT Bhilai , for instance, received 207 applications from the SC community in 2021 and accepted none. 

In 2021, IIT Mandi , IIT Goa, and IIT Tirupati have received 140, 30, and 93 applications were received from ST communities. Non was selected. In IIT Jodhpur and IIT Bhubaneswar, 107 and 149 ST applications were received. Only one out of the total was selected in each.
