New Delhi: Professor Ankit Agarwal, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Hydrology, IIT Roorkee has become the first Indian to receive the Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award by the European Geosciences Union (EGU).

As per IIT Roorkee, Ankit Agarwal received this award for his contribution to the field of hydroclimatic extremes from EGU president Irina M Artemieva during the EGU General Assembly 2023 held in Vienna, Austria from April 23 to April 28, 2023

EGU has recognised Ankit Agarwal for his research in complexity science which aims to better understand, measure and forecast hydroclimatic extremes. His research has enhanced the forecast of climate-related extremes by fusing hydrometeorology and nonlinear dynamics.

Speaking on this occasion, Prof Ankit Agarwal said, “I am obliged and like to express my gratitude towards the EGU, my mentors, colleagues and students and dedicate the award to the Department of Hydrology, IIT Roorkee”.

“The importance of collaborative research on how to prepare against such hazards before they become disasters and how lives and property can be protected is the motive behind predicting hydroclimatic extremes and contributing to society by educating people”, he further added.

European Geosciences Union presents the Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award to skilled scientists who have shown remarkable scientific achievements in the areas of earth, planetary, and space sciences and inspired the next generation of geoscientists.

Those who are nominated for each division's Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award are evaluated by the division president. After this, the outstanding candidates are further suggested to the Chair of EGU's Awards Committee to be considered for the award.
