This new campus spans 225 acres. Additionally, the institute will reuse the current land to create a student innovation hub, she added.

IIT Madras started operating its Zanzibar campus in October 2023. With this step, IIT Madras has changed its academic curricula to focus more on student selection procedures, admission structure, faculty recruitment methods, and teaching methodologies.

The institute has incorporated the knowledge gained over 65 years of operation to uphold its academic excellence, adapt to dynamic societal needs, and ensure graduates remain impactful members of society.

IIT Madras Zanzibar Campus to Provide Scholarships

IIT Madras aims to help meritorious students with financial constraints. The government of the Zanziar campus has aided such students by paying half tuition fees. IIT Madras alumni have created a scholarship fund from which scholarships are granted to non-Zanzibari students as well. The scholarships are also granted to students who are pursuing a Master’s degree in the institute.

Talking about scholarships, Preeti Aghalayam, Director of IIT Madras Zanzibar and First Female Woman Leader of an IIT shared, "If a student is meritorious and high-performing, we don't want them to be excluded from the programme because of financial constraints. In the current cohort, students have received various kinds of support. The government of Zanzibar has supported all Zanzibari students by paying partial tuition.

“Further, IIT Madras alumni have put together a fund for scholarships and some non-Zanzibari students were supported by that. The master's students also get various kinds of support. Many master's students from Africa are supported by IIT M alumni”, she further added.

The institution aims to provide stipends to Masters and PhD students who help with teaching. IIT Madras is also looking for various sponsorships and scholarships to help students. The institute will also organise various new courses which are interdisciplinary.
