IIT Madras will host hundreds of chess enthusiasts, including seasoned Grand Masters and International Masters, in the 6th edition of its rapid-fire chess tournament ‘Shaastra’. Check the key highlights here!

IIT Madras to Host its 6th Rapid-Fire Chess Tournament ‘Shaastra’ on March 30 and 31

New Delhi: IIT Madras is preparing to organize Shaastra, a rapid-fire-rated chess tournament, on March 30 and 31, 2024. The tournament will host over 500 players, including nine Grand Masters (GMs) and 17 International Masters (IMs).

“Shaastra” is IIT Madrass most unique event, mostly because only IIT Madras has the recognition to host a serious, rated rapid-fire chess tournament. The prize fund of ‘Shaastra’ totals to INR 5,00,000. The first prize is a whopping INR 65,000. 

Players from Australia, Singapore, UK, and the US will also be present at the 6th edition of ‘Shaastra’, IIT Madras. The event is recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

As ‘Shaastra’ is an open-for-all competition, chess enthusiasts from all over the world will converge at IIT Madras for the love of the game and the thrill of playing and winning. The age range of registered players is between six and 72 years. 

The top 15 boards of the tournament will be recorded with a live broadcast for those who want to watch the tournament from home. The event will see the presence of top-rated chess players such as the Captain of the 2022 Asian Games Chess Team GM Srinath NarayananGM R.R. Laxman, WGM Rakshitta Ravi, and WGM Srija Seshadri.

Prof. Sathyanarayana N Gummadi, Dean (Students) at IIT Madras, said about the event, "I believe this two-day chess tournament will bring people together, encourage collaboration, and inspire new ideas and strategies while fostering the spirit of the game. I extend my heartfelt wishes to all the players for a challenging yet rewarding experience."

Mr. Veera Phani Sai Teja, the Institute Chess Captain at IIT Madras, also spoke enthusiastically about the event. "As someone who loves chess, it is really exciting to put together a big tournament like this, especially with some of the best players from our country involved. We had such a great response from players that we reached our limit way before the tournament even commenced.”
