IIT Madras NPTEL Launches 174 Translated Technical Courses in 11 Vernacular Languages

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) NPTEL(National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning) has translated about 174 technical courses into regional languages like ‘Programming, Data Structures, and Algorithms using Python in South Indian languages’. This will help to provide technical education to students from 11 vernacular languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada in their mother tongue. 

IIT Madras NPTEL Translation Coordinator Prof. Rajesh Kumar highlighted the initiative's goal of breaking language barriers and expanding access to technical education. Prof. Abhijit P Deshpande emphasized on innovative translation methods, including subtitles, transcripts, and audio tracks.

IIT Madras NPTEL Translated Technical Courses Highlights

NPTEL has made 199 e-books in Hindi available. Candidates can get them from the institute’s official website, which helps students access various resources. About 1200 hours of video content are also available in Hindi for students from Hindi backgrounds.

A team of 682 translators and 51 Quality Control (QC) experts were engaged for the Tamil translation project, focusing on various disciplines. In addition to courses, 159 Tamil language e-books have been published on the NPTEL website, enhancing resources for Tamil-speaking learners.

Audio embeds for 906 hours of video content in Tamil have been provided, with positive feedback on accessibility and comprehension. NPTEL has translated its courses into 11 languages, aiming to aid learners transitioning from regional languages to English for technical education.

Translated materials undergo rigorous review by NPTEL Quality Control (QC) experts and are accessible in various formats free of charge. Over 20,000 hours of video content of 244 courses, including 163 engineering courses, have been translated, retaining technical terminology in English for accuracy.

Translated transcripts are compiled into books, with 980 available in regional languages on NPTEL's website and other portals.
