IIT Madras's new MInT collaboration is all set to unite industries, government entities, and academic pioneers to jointly develop the mobility digital infrastructure (known as the Bharat Multi-Modal Mobility Stack or BM3S).

IITM Launches 'Mobility and Intelligent Transportation'

New Delhi: IIT Madras has launched Mobility and Intelligent Transportation (MInT) to build a global digital infrastructure for mobility (known as the Bharat Multi-Modal Mobility Stack or BM3S).

As per IIT Madras, this initiative aims to unite industries, government entities, and academic pioneers to collaborate on development, operating on the principle of "collaborate and compete.” IIT Madras's MInT collaboration will provide complete system solutions.

Congratulating the faculty from the Transportation Group and the Department of Civil Engineering, Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean at IIT Madras, described MInT as a first step in understanding the complex world of mobility.

He highlighted the need for action, stating India's rapid growth and the increasing demands for mobility, both in terms of cargo and people's desire to travel, as well as the significant number of vehicles being added to the roads daily.

Key Highlights of IIT Madras Mobility and Intelligent Transportation

MInT is a worldwide effort focused on building a digital infrastructure for mobility and a research and development (R&D) portfolio, along with nurturing a talented workforce for creating innovative mobility solutions.

Further, this initiative will also achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, including

  • Sustainable Transport (11.2): 50% reduction in total transport emissions
  • Accident Prevention (3.6): 50% reduction in fatalities
  • Energy Efficiency (7.3): 50% of all transport from net zero modes

The Chief Guest Neeraj Mittal IAS, Secretary, Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, addressed the launch event virtually, saying that this initiative is important for the well-being and sustainable future of India.

Neeraj Mittal IAS also added, “Telecommunication is a basic infrastructure which will support all these innovations. You can see the improvement in speed in many areas. Our median speed, which used to be 1.8 Mbps in 2014, has reached somewhere around 50 Mbps. The cost of data is 1/10th to 1/20th of most advanced nations”.

“The density of smartphones has also increased significantly. The upcoming 6G technologies, which are going to integrate sensing, and quantum computing will open this opportunity for all of us to work and hand over this world and India to the future generations in a sustainable manner”, he further added.
