IIT Madras Launches IITM Research Foundation to Expand Global Presence

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the IIT Madras Research Foundation on April 8, 2024, to achieve global ambitions. The institute has selected Mr. Thirumalai Madhavnarayan as the inaugural CEO of the IITM Research Foundation. He was a business management and technology professional.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “IITMRF is a strategic initiative aligned with India’s vision to become the Vishwaguru and to be a creator of global startups. We are delighted to have Mr. Narayan, an industry veteran, lead this initiative as its CEO.”

Key Objective of the IIT Madras Research Foundation

This foundation will catalyse startups emerging from the institute's advanced technology ecosystem, enabling them to sustain global markets, secure capital and funding for research and innovation, and enhance the reach of its Academic Master's and Doctoral Programs through strategic collaborations with universities and industry partnerships.

Establishing the 'IIT Madras Research Foundation aims to expand international presence, boost innovation and entrepreneurship, and enhance the involvement with industry and research and development collaborations.

Other objectives of the IIT Madras Research Foundation are:

  • Ready-to-commercialize patents and technologies.
  • Explorations aligned with market theses (e.g., sustainable growth).
  • Facilitating global exposure and access for start-ups from the IIT Madras ecosystem, including access to new markets, capital, and technological opportunities.
  • Start-up ventures founded by IITM faculty, students, and researchers.
  • Offering alumni access to technologies developed by IIT Madras.
  • Expansion of international academic programs through strategic collaborations and industry partnerships.

Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (Alumni and Corporate Relations), IIT Madras, spoke on this launch event that, “We believe that IITMRF will be a gamechanger not just for IIT Madras, but for the country because it would have demonstrated a model for an academic institution to take its innovation to the global stage.”
