IIT Madras Dismisses Claim of Over 45 percent of Students Going Unplaced

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) has refuted reports of more than 45 % of students remaining unplaced so far. The reports came from the Global IIT Alumni Support Group, which also detailed the amount of students unplaced in other IITs.

IIT Madras has also stated that the IIT Madras 2024 placement data will be published in July 2024, after the convocation ceremony. The IIT Madras placements have been under scrutiny after a report by Dheeraj Singh, the Founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group. Singh filed an RTI and released data about the increase in the number of unplaced IIT students in past IIT placements. According to the data on IIT placements, Singh has predicted that around 45.2% of IIT students up for placements may not get placed this year.

The Hindustan Times had also released a report stating that 36% of IIT Bombay students went unplaced last year. However, IIT Bombay also refuted these claims, saying on Twitter that “only 6.1%” of the graduating students remain unplaced from the 2023 placements. Similarly, IIT Madras also made an official statement about the speculations around the IIT Madras 2024 placements.

In the statement, they said, "Placements are still ongoing at IIT Madras. Students have varied interests - some aim for higher studies, others aspire to start their own ventures and explore entrepreneurship, while some plan to appear for competitive exams like civil services. They take time to make these decisions.” They also added, “The placement data will be available at the end of July 2024, after the convocation." How many students will remain unplaced at the end of the placement season remains to be seen.
