IIT Madras Center for Innovation Unveils Cutting-Edge Tech at Annual Open House

New Delhi: During the 16th edition of Annual Open House at IIT Madras held on March 03, students from the Centre for Innovation (CFI) showcased a range of technologies to the public. The event aimed to showcase the groundbreaking innovations developed by IIT Madras students to industry professionals, investors, and alumni. 

With over 1,000 students presenting 76 projects, highlights included a solar-powered race car, a UAV for blood and medical item delivery, an ultrasonic sound-powered metal 3D printer, and a wearable tool aiding movement for paralysed fingers.

Prof. V. Kamakoti, IIT Madras Director, praised the CFI students and hailed CFI as one of the institute's most vibrant bodies. He emphasised CFI's transformative role as a game-changer in defining the future of education for India's next generation. 

Highlights of IIT Madras Annual Open House 2024

The Institute Open House 2024, part of the 'Anaivarukkum IITM' (IITM for all) initiatives, took place on March 2 and 3, 2024. Researchers from over 100 laboratories explained ongoing research to the public, with exhibits ranging from Robotics and Biomedical Engineering labs to Electric Vehicle Fun Events and 3D printing facilities.

Some projects showcased during CFI Open House 2024 included an assistive device for mobility for visually challenged persons, a reusable sounding rocket, a wearable tool aiding people with paralysed fingers, and a solar-powered race car.

CFI, which houses 14 clubs and seven competition teams, provides students with access to funding and facilities, including 3D printers, laser cutters, and electronics workstations. Notably, 100 patents and several student-led startups have originated from CFI.

Speaking on this occasion, IIT Madras Director Prof. Kamakoti stressed the importance of generating more ideas as India strives to become a technology superpower by 2047. Dean (Students) Prof. Sathyanarayana N Gummadi applauded CFI as a beacon of innovation and creativity, empowering students to harness entrepreneurial potential. 

Prof. Prabhu Rajagopal, Advisor (Innovation and Entrepreneurship) at IIT Madras, emphasised the pivotal role of CFI and the Nirmaan Pre-Incubator in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship among students. He highlighted how the CFI Open House encourages creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills among budding innovators.

Ashwani Muppasani, COO (India & Asia Pacific) at Stellantis, the Guest of Honour, expressed enthusiasm for Stellantis' participation in the CFI Open House 2024. A 3rd-year student, Madhav Nambi RV, shared his experience interacting with professionals from different sectors during the event.
