IIT Madras Celebrates 65th Institute Day; Crosses 400 Patents in One Year

IIT Madras celebrated its 65th Institute Day on April 20, 2024. During the President’s Address, IIT Madras Director Prof. V Kamakoti announced a target of 50,000 enrollments in the next couple of years and the achievement of 400 patents.

IIT Madras Celebrates 65th Institute Day; Crosses 400 Patents in One Year

New Delhi: IIT Madras held its 65th Institute Day ceremony on April 20, 2024. On this occasion, IIT Madras honoured its faculty members, students and alumni with awards for their achievements and shared the milestones achieved by the institutes.

The Chief Guest of IIT Madras 65th Institute Day was Dr. V. Sumantran, Chairman of Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd. (IndiGo Airlines) and Chairman of Celeris Technologies. Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, delivered the Presidential Address.

Dr. V. Sumantran also spoke about the possibilities of India’s aviation and travel-related future at the event. He said, "India is really moving forward with a lot more speed. We have about 140 operating airports now which will be 220 by the year 2030…Last year at the Paris Air Show, we placed an order for 500 aircraft, which is the single largest aircraft order in aviation history. This was built based on the confidence we have in the Indian Market.”

Dr. V. Sumantran, Chairman of Board of Directors of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd said, “We [also] have the largest number of women pilots for any airline in the world, not based on women pilots per aircraft. The message is that India offers us a phenomenal platform. For a sustainable world, India can offer lessons on how to grow with responsibility - Achieve more with less." 

Delivering the Presidential Address, Prof. V. Kamakoti said, "The IIT Madras BS Data Science and Electronic Systems programs have crossed more than 26,000 students who are part of the 'Multiple-Entry, Multiple-Exit' program. This year, we aspire to reach 30,000 [and] within the next two to three years, IIT Madras should have a total of 50,000 students enrolled as part of our higher education system. This will include 12,500 students in the campus and more than 37,000 in the online mode."

Prof. V. Kamakoti also talked about the patents filed by IIT Madras, saying, "This year our Target No. 1 was 'Patent a Day'...I am happy to state that the number of patents granted crossed 400. It is the innovation and protection of our IPs that are going to make India a superpower."

Prof. Kamakoti also talked about IIT Madras’s plans to increase the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in India. He said “Today, India's GER is around 28%...It is time that we all work towards increasing the GER to 50%, as envisaged in NEP 2020. In this direction, we have started 250+ Rural Interaction Centres across India [and] the Northern part of Sri Lanka."
