IIT Jodhpur Researchers Developed Smartphone-Based Glucose Testing System

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the researchers at IIT Jodhpur have developed a one-of-a-kind system which uses smartphones to test glucose levels in patients. This development will aim to provide an easy-to-access glucose testing system with efficient results.

As per IIT Jodhpur, the system developed by the researchers includes a paper-based analytical device which is connected to a smartphone with the help of an Android application With this, the device detects the sample of glucose with a concentration range of 10−40 mM.

Informing about the research, Dr. Ankur Gupta, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Jodhpur shared, “Smartphones offer seamless integration with other technologies and platforms. The ability to connect the smartphone-based spot detection framework to a larger network or database can facilitate remote monitoring, data storage, and sharing of results. This connectivity can be crucial for healthcare professionals or researchers”.

Key Features of IIT Jodhpur Smartphone Glucose Testing System

With the help of this device, patients can easily check their glucose testing results without any technical or advanced laboratory setting. The device is cost-effective as well as biodegradable with a lab cost of approximately INR 10. Moving forward, the research team aims to make this device more accessible and affordable for all, with a cost of INR 5.

Talking about the scope of the glucose testing system, Dr Ankur Gupta shared, “This study demonstrates that this developed system is equipped for initial disease screening at the user end. By incorporating machine learning techniques, the platform can provide reliable and accurate results, thus paving the way for estimating the accuracy of the results for improved initial healthcare screening and diagnosis of any disease.”
