IIT Jodhpur Incorporates AI and ML Principles into Engineering Disciplines

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur (IIT Jodhpur) has taken a pioneering step by integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) principles into its traditional engineering disciplines.

With the establishment of the Inter-disciplinary Research Division in 2019-20, IIT Jodhpur has undergone a comprehensive curriculum review, leading to the development of specialized, interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and transdisciplinary courses/programs with a flexible curriculum.

This initiative aims to foster a holistic approach among researchers, bridging the gap between various academic disciplines, and equipping them to address complex challenges effectively.

IIT Jodhpur's Seven Verticals of IDPRs

IIT Jodhpur's Inter-disciplinary Research Division (IDRP) consists of seven verticals known as Inter-disciplinary Research Programmes (IDRPs). These verticals are Digital Humanities (DH), IoT and Applications (IoT), Quantum Information and Computation (QIC), Robotics and Mobility (RM), Science of Intelligence (SoI), Smart Health Care (SHC), and Space Science Technology (SST).

IIT Jodhpur Digital Humanities Program

Among these, the Digital Humanities program (DH program) encompasses student projects on diverse topics like e-governance, ICT, app design, AI-based design, digital banking, VR-based e-learning, digital healthcare, human-computer interaction, digital social reading, archiving, digital heritage, documentation of traditional art, and algorithmic accountability, among others.

IIT Jodhpur, JCKIF, and the Rajasthan Government have signed an MoU to bring this initiative into practice. The IoT Applications Vertical, a part of this collaboration, is dedicated to advancing IoT technologies in various sectors such as water, wildlife, medical devices, energy, and transport.

Their work includes fabless chip design and the development and analysis of cutting-edge communication technologies for IoT applications. The partnership has led to the establishment of the AIOT (Artificial Intelligence of Other Things) Fab.

The Robotics and Mobility group at IIT Jodhpur is dedicated to advancing the fields of robotics and mobility systems. Their research focuses on various aspects, including modeling, control, multimodal perception, communication, AI/ML, and energy management systems.

By addressing technological challenges in the civil and military sectors, they aim to develop state-of-the-art applications, particularly in electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and drones.

In the domain of smart healthcare solutions, IIT Jodhpur aims to emerge as an interdisciplinary platform. Through multidisciplinary research and teaching, they seek to bring disruption to the conventional healthcare regime.

The joint Medical Technology program (MMT) with AIIMS, Jodhpur, is a unique collaboration between IIT and a medical institute. The program has successfully graduated its first batch of M. Sc (DH) and MMT students in 2022.

Further, the Space Science Technology group at IIT Jodhpur has an objective to become a Center of Excellence for Research and Learning in Space Science & Technology. This group comprises four distinct research subgroups, each specializing in specific areas.

The first subgroup is dedicated to space propulsion, working on rocket propulsion for heavy space vehicles and electric propulsion for micro satellites. The second subgroup focuses on space sensors, including those for space missions, space environment measurements, and health monitoring for astronauts using 2D materials.

The third subgroup is actively involved in space sensors, environment measurements, and space observations. Lastly, the fourth subgroup's primary focus is on the development of space deployable mini-satellites. Through the endeavors of these research subgroups, IIT Jodhpur aims to contribute significantly to the advancements in Space Science & Technology.

Apart from the PhD program, the Interdisciplinary Research Division at IIT Jodhpur offers a Master's program in Digital Humanities (M.Sc in DH), as well as Master, Master-PhD, and PhD programs in Medical Technology (MMT) as part of IDRP-SHC, which commenced in 2020.

Moreover, the division introduced the M.Tech program in Robotics and Mobility in 2022, and the M.Tech program in Quantum Technologies is scheduled to begin in the academic year 2023-24.

The division collaborates with approximately 120 faculties from various primary departments, supporting and encouraging them to engage in interdisciplinary projects with both internal and external financial backing.
