IIT-Hyderabad Pioneers Driverless Cars, Opening the Path for Smart Mobility Solutions; Check Details Here

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-Hyderabad) has successfully developed driverless cars. The institute is currently offering rides to students and professors within its campus. Using the sensor technologies from the TiHAN center, India's inaugural Autonomous Navigation Testbed facility, autonomous shuttle cars effortlessly navigate the IIT-H campus.

Utilizing a LiDAR-based navigation system, the shuttle cars were tested and deployed on campus, while the center is simultaneously developing a range of autonomous vehicles, including aerial and ground-based options, all of which provide advanced, eco-friendly, and secure mobility solutions. Furthermore, the center is actively engaged in shaping the nation's regulations for autonomous vehicles and standardizing procedures for automated vehicle operations. These self-driving cars hold promise for applications in controlled environments like warehouses, university campuses, and airports.

The TiHAN at IIT Hyderabad is a collaborative effort by various departments such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Design, and Entrepreneurship at IITH.

Under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, the government of India entered into an MoU with TiHAN, IIT Hyderabad on June 7, 2023. This agreement aims to promote collaboration in the field of autonomous navigation testing facilities, with a primary focus on strengthening workforce skills in automated driving through the utilization of TiHAN's technical expertise and infrastructure.
