New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad's attempts to cultivate a new generation of entrepreneurs have gradually paid off. It has already generated enormous profits for 130 enterprises, roughly Rs 1,200. In the last eight years, the institute has invested Rs 8 crore in these start-ups.

Currently, 50 of them are working out of the IITH campus in Kandi in the Sangareddy neighborhood. IITH director BS Murty told TOI, "We have built a strong environment within the institute to support entrepreneurship.” The institute now permits BTech students to double major in entrepreneurship and MTech in Techno Entrepreneurship, whereas previously students could select to minor in entrepreneurship.

A department of entrepreneurship and management, a course centred on prototypes, and a PhD focused on products are all present. Additionally, it has launched a number of programmes, including Bold & Unique Ideas Leading to Development (BUILD) and Nidhi Prayas, which promote hardware-based deep tech ideas with prototype grants of up to Rs 10 lakh.

BUILD supports hundreds of people, including undergraduate students and recent graduates, to give life to their creative ideas and ultimately turn them into startups. “Removing the requirement that students obtain a 9 CGPS in the first year in order to transfer to the course of their choice is one of the significant changes we have made.

Today, all BTech students have the option. After that restriction was lifted, students began considering how they could improve. Even first-year students are displaying an interest in entrepreneurship, and some of our students are now at a point where they can make a living even before they graduate,” he added. The institute has also made many of its capabilities available to outside businesses through a number of incubation schemes.

According to some of the entrepreneurs based at IITH, the university is the finest location for them to advance their products. "When we first launched our company. We had some money because we had received grants totaling $40,000, but we were still using our co-founder's home as our office. At that time, we learned about the IITH and received advanced incubation. The finest location for developing hardware products is there”, according to Bharavi Butta, founder and CEO of Persist Energy.

He claimed that at IITH, they could develop a product that was ready for production and received support for obtaining the necessary certification.
