IIT Bombay Students Reddit Rant Goes Viral Says IIT No Golden Gateway to Supreme Education

New Delhi: A Reddit post by a first-year IIT Bombay student on the grading and teaching system of IITs has recently become viral. User ‘dengo302005’ made a post on the subreddit “BTechtards”, criticizing various aspects of the system and expressing their disappointment. “People outside of this college think of it as a "golden gateway to supreme education", but it is exactly the opposite,” said the user.

The user went on to say, "I feel lost and do not have the enthusiasm in the same manner that I had during my JEE days. The grading system here is so heavily dependent on the subjectivity of the TAs (Teaching Assistants) that it defeats the whole purpose of education." They also compared IIT Bombay to a school, saying, “The college feels like "a school more than a school…O just don't know what to make of myself in these four years.”

The post was made in March 2024 and gathered quite a lot of attention. With news about IIT placements making the rounds everywhere, the post allowed IIT students to discuss their woes on public forums. The post has since gathered over 250 upvotes and over 100 comments, with other students chiming in with their own perspectives.

One user commented. “IITs were never about this…it is a place that gives you a chance to display your talent and hard work to the world and potential recruiters. Professors here are not supposed to be teachers. Their existence is there to put you through ordeals...The whole concept of IITians is that they are able to work through whatever tough situations they are given and produce the best results possible.”

Another user gave some advice from an industry perspective: “If you are not inclined to higher studies then do the bare minimum to keep your CGPA above 7.5 and you should be fine for placements. Not a single company cares about your grades in college,” they said.
