New Delhi: The IIT Bombay has consistently been the primary choice for over 1,000 top-ranked JEE Advanced candidates for more than five years. IIT Delhi follows as the second preference by a significant margin.
According to the recently released Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) Report for 2023, the top 1,000 candidates have consistently favored 10 IITs since 2019, with IIT Bombay standing out as their top choice.
IIT Delhi holds the second position, attracting 208 toppers in 2023, while IIT Kanpur secures the third spot with 120. This year, 113 candidates opted for IIT Madras, and 81 successfully gained admission to IIT Kharagpur.
However, the emerging IITs and converts like IIT Roorkee appear to be closing in on the established counterparts. While still ranking within the top five choices, the preference for IIT Kharagpur and India's leading engineering institution, IIT Madras, has experienced a decline since 2019.
Further, the interest in IIT Guwahati and the relatively newer IIT Hyderabad has witnessed an increase. However, this trend doesn't apply universally to all new-generation institutes as IIT Indore attracted 18 toppers in 2019 but has not repeated this achievement since.
Admission to the IITs is done through two nationwide examinations – JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Aspirants qualifying in JEE Main proceed to JEE Advanced, primarily designed for securing admission in the IITs. The National Testing Agency (NTA) administers JEE Main, while one of the seven zonal IITs conducts JEE Advanced.
The Joint Admission Board (JAB) was headed by two chairmen, TG Sitharam, former director of IIT Guwahati, and Parameswar K. Iyer, then officiating director. The year 2020 witnessed the lowest number of JEE Advanced toppers securing seats in IITs, attributed to the shift to online classes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

JEE Advanced Outcome: Consistent Trends Across 5 IITs
Since 2019, IIT Bombay has consistently been the top choice for the highest number of JEE Advanced Toppers each year. Concurrently, five IITs have consistently attracted the majority of the top 1,000 JEE Advanced rank-holders.
While there has been an increase in the number of seats allocated to toppers at a few IITs over the years, IIT Bombay has experienced a decline. The peak was in 2021, with 265 of the top 1,000 JEE Advanced rankers selecting IIT Bombay. Subsequently, the institute had 246 top rank-holders in 2022 and 245 in 2023. Notably, in 2020, only 188 toppers opted for IIT Bombay, marking its lowest count during that period.
IIT Delhi, the second most favored choice among JEE Advanced toppers, achieved its highest count of top-rank holders for the institute in 2022, with a total of 210. In 2023, IIT Kanpur recorded the highest number of toppers at 120.
IIT Madras saw the highest number in 2019 when the institute witnessed its peak with 145 JEE Advanced toppers opting for it. A similar pattern is observed in admissions at IIT Kharagpur.
Further, the institute experienced its highest number of JEE Advanced toppers in 2019, with 100 opting for it. The lowest count was in 2020, prompting IIT Kharagpur to announce a fee waiver for the top 100 rankers joining the institute the following year.

Trends Among Newer IITs
- Among the more recent IITs, there appears to be a significant decline in the popularity of IIT Indore, while IIT Hyderabad, established just a year earlier in 2008, has witnessed an upward trend.
- Notably, IIT Roorkee and IIT (BHU) Varanasi, both older engineering colleges converted into IITs, exhibit a distinct contrast, with IIT Roorkee gaining increased favor among top scorers over the past five years.
- However, IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Ropar, both founded in 2008, along with IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad, which acquired the IIT status in 2016, had only one topper each opting for these institutes in 2020, 2021, and 2022, respectively.
