IIT Bombay, Hyderabad and 17 Leading NITs Discontinued Branch Change Option for Students; Check Details Here

New Delhi: The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jammu, and 17 leading National Institutes of Technology (NITs) have decided to discontinue the branch change option for students.

According to the reports, NIT Delhi, Rourkela, Tiruchi, Warangal, Kurukshetra, Jaipur, Surat, Nagaland, Jamshedpur, Pondicherry, Suratkal and Calicut are the top NITs that discontinued the option for students.

Now the students will not be able to upgrade from lower branches to higher which leads to the admission cut-off in the lower branch of IITs starting to increase. The qualifying All India Rank has now been increased to 3 to 4 thousand compared to last year.

Before when IITs allowed branch upgradation in lower branches, the cutoff for IITs used to be lower than that of other branches. Now, with the branch change option closed by leading IITs like IIT Bombay and IIT Hyderabad, students are opting for lower branches in other top IITs which results in an increase in cutoff of Energy, Chemical, Civil, Metallurgy, Environmental Science, Aerospace, and Chemical Engineering branches of IIT Bombay.

A career counseling coach from Allen Institute, Amit Aujha has said that a lot of students every year get admission to core branches of IITs but he watched a lot of students get admitted to lower branches which were started in the year 2012 to 2017. And in the second year, they upgraded their branch. This actually helped students to get admission at their desired branches on the basis of their CGPA by the end of the first year. Now it won’t be possible in core campuses.

Since the discontinue the upgrade process, aspirants will now choose the other IIT Institutes like IIT Indore, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Patna, IIT Ropar, IIT Mandi, which opened in 2012 and IIT Palakkad, IIT Dharwad, IIT Tirupati, IIT Goa, and IIT Bhilai which opened in 2017 as these institutes will still provide this option for students.
