New Delhi: Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIITD) Delhi has partnered with Erasmus+ program of the European Union (EU) to advance robotics education and research in India. IIIT will be leading the project IRAS-HUB initiated in collaboration with EU. The project is aimed at addressing the lack of skilled talent in robotics technology in India.

Principal Investigator Dr. Jainendra Shukla, PhD, an Assistant Professor at IIIT Delhi will be leading the project. It will also bring together nine distinguished faculty members from IIIT Delhi, IIIT Allahabad, and IIIT Hyderabad for an intensive two-week training program in robotics.

The EU has sanctioned funding of 800,000 EUROS for three years, which involves ten partners from 5 different countries, including four HEIs from India. As the lead institute, IIIT-Delhi will collaborate with other partners to achieve the goals.

To overcome the scarcity of skilled talent in robotics technology in India, the project IRAS-HUB will also establish three hubs in Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) in India. The hubs will be equipped with prototyping equipment and robotics software and will train researchers from Indian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in RAS with reputable researchers and experts from EU HEIs.

The first phase of training under the project was conducted at the University of Genoa (UNIGE) and was coordinated by Prof. Fulvio Mastrogiovanni and Prof. Enrico Simetti. It focused on crucial aspects of robotics such as the modelling of manipulation, kinematics, dynamics, and control. The training also included gesture-based robot control and task motion planning.

The participating faculty from IIIT-Delhi consisted of Dr Sanat K. Biswas and Dr Kalpana Shankhwar, who joined their colleagues for specialised training sessions at Università degli Studi di Genova, Italy, and Warsaw University of Technology, Poland, from June 10 to 21, 2024.

The second phase of the training at Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) was hosted by Prof. Teresa Zielinska and Prof. Cezary Zieliński. This session emphasised mobile robotics and robot programming methods, which are pivotal for creating autonomous robots that can operate effectively in dynamic environments.

What do IIIT Delhi Professors Say About the Project?

Prof. Ranjan Bose, Director of IIIT-Delhi, highlighted the promising future of robotics in India, stating, "Robotics holds immense potential for driving innovation and solving real-world challenges in India. This event has been incredibly beneficial in equipping our faculty with the necessary skills and knowledge to lead this transformative journey. We are grateful to our European partners for their support and collaboration in making this training programme a success."

Dr. Jainendra Shukla stated, "It was an amazing experience to witness the wonderful training facilities and infrastructure available at both partner universities. This exposure has motivated us to develop cutting-edge robotics training programmes in India, leveraging the insights and methodologies we have gained from our esteemed European counterparts. I invite stakeholders from various domains across India to collaborate with us in making India a global leader in robotics "
