New Delhi: Famous entrepreneur and philanthropist Bill Gates visited IIT Delhi to interact with students on February 29, 2024. Gates delivered a keynote address to over 1000 attendees on the topic ‘Innovation for Public Good’. His inspiring speech was followed by an interactive Q & A Session, moderated by Co-Founder of Rivigo and IIT Delhi alumna Gazal Kalra.

In his keynote address at IIT Delhi, Gates highlighted the essential role that emerging technologies play in the challenges faced by the development, health, and welfare sectors of society. Innovative, cost-effective solutions that can be scaled to India’s large population are a pressing need today. He lauded the work that India has done in implementing AI for education, vaccine manufacturing, and digital public infrastructure.

Encouraging students to use technology for social good, he also spoke about the importance of collaborations between the government, the private sector, and educational institutions like IITs.

“You’re all lucky to be here and have gotten an incredible education. The complexity of how we take technology and shape it - you’ll get an opportunity to play a big role there,” he told the audience during the interaction.

Noting the rapid development of AI technologies, he also remarked, “If I was a student today, the mysteries of AI would draw me in. It is kind of weird that even the systems that are working so well, we don’t really understand them. I would definitely be drawn to that.”

Giving his young crowd hope and motivation, he told them, “I think you have a very bright future. No matter what your specialty is - whether it is engineering, discovering new drugs, or policy work - the AI advances will give you opportunities and force you to think through these new systems in very deep ways.”

He also shared words of optimism about what he expects to see at IIT Delhi in the next five years, saying: “I’ll bet when I come back here, say it’s 5 years from now, some of you will be able to tell me about new technologies you have created - to inspire students, to help farmers, to solve healthcare problems, and to help us with climate.”

In other news, Bill Gates has also recently done a collaboration with a tea-seller from Nagpur by the name of “Dolly” to announce “Chai pe Charcha”.
