Course Curriculum

8

  • For embedded systems program, the difficult level is very high and coursework is very demanding. It is a mix of both practical and theoretical curriculum.
  • Maximum 2 classes a day and that also depends on how many courses one registers for a quarter. Each class is for 2 hours. There is also a separate practical session if the course has one.
  • Around 40 students
  • Around 8-10 Indian students

Admission Experience

  • 1. KTH Royal Institute of Technology - waitlisted, TU/e - admitted, Twente - rejected, Hochschule Bremerhaven - admitted, FAU Erlangen - rejected, Darmstadt university of applied sciences - rejected, University of Stuttgart - rejected, ASU - admitted, Northeastern university - admitted, University of Windsor - admitted, UIC - admitted
    2. TU/e, Hochschule Bremerhaven, ASU, Northeastern University, University of Windsor, UIC
    3. University of Twente, FAU Erlangen, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, University of Stuttgart
    4. For the German universities, my CGPA was not competitive i.e. above 8.5. For Twente they gave a clear reason that my coursework not up to the expected mark (no of credits earned and hours per credits) as it is a research institute. They maybe needed a research publication from my side is my guess. I also think that university NIRF ranking also plays an important role because quite a lot of VIT students were accepted in Twente.
  • I wanted to choose a European university. I was targeting Germany first but seeing the rejection rate and the APS certificate waiting list was too long, I didn't choose Germany. For Swiss universities like EPFL and ETH Zurich my CGPA was too less. I would have chosen KTH had thy admitted me. But TU/e gave me an admit and the program was also what I wanted.
  • I applied for September intake. I have already discussed the influencing factors before. Admission process starts in March and goes on till June. The acceptance is given from Feb-April. I am not entirely aware of this timeline. The detailed timeline is available on website. The guarantee fee payment which includes tuition fees is done around April - May. The university housing lottery happens in June. Academic year starts in September.

Faculty

6

  •  It is 1 faculty for each batch of 30-40 students. This doesn't influence much in the quality of teaching. This certainly influences interaction with the faculty. But even then the faculty member makes sure that every students question is answered
  • We shouldn't directly compare the teaching methodology of a faculty with preparing one for securing a job. Each faculty member has their own methodology but the subjects do prepare your basics of the field.
  • This depends on the department of your program. Electrical debt does not help much unless you have a high grade. Mechanical dept helps the students with this.
  • I have admired Geoffrey Nelissen and Tanir Ozcelebi because of their teaching methodology and their clarity of thoughts while explaining certain concepts.

Campus Life

8

  • There is only one campus and in this campus each department has its own building. The list is available on website
  • There is a library, students sports center and emergency medical services.
  • Each year in March. carnival is celebrated by all people living in Noord-Brabant and Limburg provinces. Other details are available on website
  • All these details are available on website and I am not aware of all of them in detail

Part Time Jobs

  • 1. These vary from dept to dept. Mechanical and industrial engineering dept have more TA positions available.
    2. The pay range differs. 14 euros per hour is the min wage
    3. The students have the option to work in the supermarket or a bar and the min wage is he same as before
    4. 16 hours is the max in most case but it maybe 20 as well.
    5. It is difficult to secure on campus part time jobs.
  • Most Indian students must be working off-campus. In other cases they also do a TA if it is available. Indian students find the curriculum challenging so in most cases they do not do a part time job unless really necessary. This differs from to job and can be found online. For TA positions a student has to approach the professor of the course for which TA is required and for off-campus jobs you have to go to the place and inquire.

Placement

6

  • Currently the job market is not so good here in Netherlands due to budget cuts, hiring freeze,  financial crunch, etc. There is also no campus placement available and one has to search for a job on his own.
  • The average salary range can be found online. Internships, doing your thesis in a company is a good way to network with people and look for a potential job. ASML, Philips, NXP, Accenture, VDL, Alten, TNO, etc. are some places where graduates are hired.

Accommodation

Off Campus
6

  • I found accommodation through the university lottery. I also used online platforms. My accommodation is off-campus
  • My monthly rent is 650 euros which includes basic rent plus gas, water, electricity and internet, service cost
  • It is very difficult to find accommodation in the Netherlands due to housing crisis. So the landlord has more power here than the tenant.
  • Start looking for accommodation through online platforms, facebook groups (beware of scammers but some are genuine) even though there is a university lottery. One is not guaranteed housing through the lottery.
  • It is 3.5 km away and it takes 20 min by bicycle. Quite a lot of students live on campus. Majority of Indian students live off-campus.

Exams

  •  IELTS or TOEFL, GRE for some programs of TU Delft only
  • 2 letters of recommendation (if one is from workplace it helps) but not mandatory, Statement of purpose, CV, Transcript of all courses undertaken in the under-graduate program, Degree certificate or proof that you have passed under-graduate program from the college on letterhead, passport
  • No interview is required

Fees

  • TU/e increase the fees yearly by 1000-1500 euros for non-eu students. They take fees yearly and a lump sum amount for the first year. I paid a total of 18,500 euros as a guarantee fee which included 17,800 euros tuition fee and, 210 euros visa fee. The remaining amount was returned back to me. As a non-eu student, I also paid 11,500 euros as proof of financial means to prove that I can support my finances for first year. After admission, this full amount was returned back to me. For the second year, students have the option of paying lumpsum amount or a monthly debit for 10 months.
  • The tuition fee was 19,300 euros. My monthly expenses include 150-200 euros groceries (food, drinks, etc.), 100 euros miscellaneous expenses (you travel with or friends), around 600 euros rent if it is a student housing but if not then 900-1000 euros. Students above 23 years get a subsidy from the government as housing allowance. 60 euros insurance, 10 euros mobile plan. I have a bicycle which is kind of unsaid rule that one should own a second hand bike so travelling expenses ae not applicable to me. But train and buses are there if required.

Scholarship

  • ALSP scholarship is the one which everyone applies for. If you apply to TU/e before 1st Feb, then you are considered for it but the competition is too much. I did not get any scholarship. You need to have a high CGPA for this. Out of 2500 applicants, only 50 are awarded the scholarship.
  • There is a scholarship from ASML and the amount is 5000 euros for a year. It does not cover the entire amount but it is still helps. The criteria is any student having CGPA above 7.5 is eligible. I was aware of this so didn't apply.
  • There are India based scholarships (interest free loans) as well which help students cover some part of their tuition fee. I think Mahindra and TATA give them, I was not aware of this as well so couldn't apply.
