- Likes:
- I chose this program because of its low tuition cost and high research output in a unique combination of linguistics and Computer Science, not found in many other universities around the world. It should be noted that, although Natural Language Processing is one aspect of the program, there are other aspects likely Psycholinguistics, Language Acquisition etc which you also get to learn about through this program. Such a unique offering of courses is what drew me to this program.,
- Many Research Opportunities, Fantastic Faculty, Extremely International cohort, Many Social Events, Good location and so a lot of places to travel to during breaks.
- Dislikes:
- I don't really dislike anything about the College, as I aware of what I was getting into. Something that people should be wary about is that, knowing German in Germany is extremely important. Although the program is international, a lot of the administrative stuff at the beginning of your program needs to be completed in German. Therefore knowledge of the language would be a massive bonus to anyone joining.
Placement:
High Research opportunities, no "Placement program" as such, need to apply for jobs on your own, or through the job fair.
Internship:
Not an internship, but a Research Assistant Position in a Lab in the university called LaCoCo. The way to get any assistantship in the university is by cold emailing the person in charge of the lab, and trying to find common research interests with them. The final round is generally a technical interview which one needs to do well in.
- Likes:
- My university is public university, meaning there is no tuition fees (just semester fees). The program itself is very interesting and my university is the most popular amongst all the European countries for this program. It gives more emphasis on research and aligns well with my goals.,
- I liked the program, the department, the faculty, the options available for research and most importantly the diverse culture because of the international students.,
- I have got the chance to be admitted into one of the competitive programs and also the chance to meet people across various parts of the world. Talented and motivated faculty has given me great exposure to the career opportunities available and also at the same time, captured my attention towards the systematic research.
- Dislikes:
- Saarbruecken is a medium-sized city and this makes it hard to get the jobs easily or even get the industrial exposure so easily. That is the only problem with the university. The rest of the aspects are totally fine by me.
Placement:
There are no placement options available via university and the students have to keep an eye for job fairs, networking and looking for openings through the advertisements. But the research options tend to be much better as most programs also have a PhD options and it becomes easier to enter into research in the same university.
Internship:
Although there are student research assistant options available, I haven't applied for any of it yet. These roles are available only if the PhD program has the opening. The process usually involves the basic interview and understanding the research interest of the candidate. The openings are usually communicated over emails but it is advised to speak with professors.
- Likes:
- The German infrastructure for research in one of the best, and the lab I went for my postdoc is doing really well interms of research with many impactful publications in flagship journals.,
- Infrastructure, facilities, ease of doing work, flexibility in working hours, my friends and colleagues, research supervisor and many more. In general I am acknowledge my Institute for every thing it gave me.
- Dislikes:
- Weather sometimes, another time excessive work, may be sometimes foods, overall there are very few things to complain about and I am more than happy during my stay in its camous.
Placement:
I have no idea on this, as I never applied for a industry job. My main aim is for academic post and continue my research.
Internship:
No. Though I visited the University of Heidelberg during my PhD and spent their three semesters. I got this opportunity by the German DAAD fellowship.
