Rachna Review at Ludwig Maximilian University Of Munich [LMU], Munich | Collegedunia

My experience at LMU, Munich.

R
6.2 /10

Quite good. It was nice in the sense that the education system was quite extensive and the staff was very cooperative. There was also the option of finishing your studies within 5 semesters and with Corona, they extended it to 6 semesters. The halls where the classes were conducted were also well equipped.

Course Curriculum :

The curriculum is very up to date! The cover the latest researches and findings in the domain of interest and they also give us chance to work with real data and publication options. But if course, one needs to be exceptionally good at something for the professors to read to your paper and show interest in publishing it. They also teach the basics of all softwares like R, python, SQL etc.

Exams :

It depends on the course actually. For my master's course in Epidemiology, there was no requirement to submit any document that proved statistical or English proficiency. There was a face to face interview conducted after a written test which was designed to test the students' English language proficiency and statistical knowledge. So, I didn't sit for either GRE nor IELTS/TOEFL. A fully descriptive CV along with a filled up extensive motivation form from the department and certified copies of all educational certificates was asked to submit. Nothing else. There was a written online objective exam which was for an hour. They tested the statistical knowledge and general knowledge on the subject. Once that was cleared, students were invited for an interview. It was a video call and 2 PhD students or 1 PhD student and a professor took the interview and they asked basic statistical questions and case studies and also practical questions like if I can afford my stay there.

Placement :

I don't have the status but I don't think many students were placed. Almost everyone got jobs through LinkedIn or other job portals. But this could be because of many reasons like people choosing to study further or not being happy with the salary etc.

Internship :

No. I didn't do that. I got an internship directly from the uni.

Fees :

No tuition fee. The semester fee was €142.

Scholarship :

Yes. I received a 1 time grant of €1200 based on my performance.

Faculty :

The student staff ratio was very good. Every subject in the curriculum was divided into smaller subjects and each smaller subject was taught by a specialized professor/guest lecturer. There were tutorials which were taken by either the PhD students or by the top students of the same class who had a previous professional experience. Every person who taught was able to pass on huge amount of knowledge.

Campus Life :

Everything is perfect. There are projectors, white boards etc. It's not super modern as we see in movies, but quite good for the small semester fee that we pay.

Hostel :

Accommodation in Munich is as difficult as climbing Mount Everest and coming back down safely. Private accommodation is extremely costly and the dorms have a huge waiting time. It's best to try to connect to people who are already in Munich and can help you with dorm subletting. One should easily have at least ? 22-25 lakhs for a 2 year stay in Germany even if you get a side job while studying there.
