RWTH Aachen University is Germany's largest technical university and one of Europe's most respected institutions for engineering and applied sciences. Ranked #105 in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and #92 by Times Higher Education 2026, it draws thousands of applications from Indian students every year — particularly for its Master's programs in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Automotive Engineering. The university has over 45,000 enrolled students and an acceptance rate of approximately 10%, making it genuinely competitive.

What makes RWTH Aachen stand out for Indian students is its zero tuition fee structure for most Bachelor's and Master's programs. You only pay a semester contribution fee. However, the admission process has specific requirements that many applicants misunderstand — from grade conversion rules to language certificates to document formats. This article breaks down every requirement directly from the official RWTH Aachen website, so you know exactly what to prepare.

RWTH Aachen Admission Requirements for Indian Students: Bachelor's Programs

Indian students applying for a Bachelor's degree at RWTH Aachen must meet three core requirements: a valid university entrance qualification, language proficiency and timely application submission. All Bachelor's programs at RWTH are taught in German, which means German language proficiency is non-negotiable for undergraduate applicants.

What qualifies as a university entrance qualification for Indian students?

Your 10+2 certificate (CBSE, ISC or state board) is your university entrance qualification (HZB). RWTH requires that the overall average grade of your HZB must be equivalent to at least a German grade of 2.5. If your grade is below this threshold, you cannot apply directly — even for open-admission programs.

There is one exception: if your grade is below 2.5, you can compensate by submitting a valid TestAS score. TestAS is an aptitude test for international students and is offered only four times a year, so plan well in advance. For Medicine (model program) and Dentistry, a TestAS score is always mandatory regardless of your grades.

You can verify whether your Indian degree is recognized in Germany using the ANABIN database (anabin.kmk.org). If your 10+2 does not directly qualify you for a German university, you have two options: complete one or two semesters at an Indian university first, or attend a Studienkolleg (preparatory college) in Germany.

Language requirements for Bachelor's applicants

Since all Bachelor's programs are in German, you must prove German language proficiency at C1 level at the time of enrollment. Accepted certificates include DSH (Stage 2) and TestDaF (Level 4). Some programs like Computer Science additionally require proof of English at B2 level.

Note for Indian students: RWTH strongly recommends starting German language preparation in India itself. A residence permit for language learning in Germany is typically limited to 12 months and does not guarantee passing the required exam in time. The Goethe Institute has branches across India and is a reliable starting point.
Requirement Details
Academic Qualification 10+2 certificate (CBSE/ISC/State Board) equivalent to German Abitur; minimum grade equivalent to German 2.5
German Language C1 level — DSH Stage 2 or TestDaF Level 4 (required at enrollment)
English Language B2 level for select programs (e.g., Computer Science)
TestAS Optional (compensates for grade below 2.5); Mandatory for Medicine and Dentistry
Documents Required HZB (school transcripts/leaving certificate), tabular CV, language certificates, passport copy
Application Fee None
Application Portal RWTHonline (online.rwth-aachen.de)

For some Bachelor's programs, a preliminary internship is required before enrollment. Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration and Engineering (Mechanical) require a six-week internship. Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering require four weeks. Check your specific program page before applying.

RWTH Aachen Master's Admission Requirements for Indian Students

For Indian students, the Master's route is the most common and accessible path into RWTH Aachen. Most Master's programs are consecutive, meaning your Bachelor's degree must be in a related field. A philosophy graduate cannot apply for Mechanical Engineering — the content of your undergraduate degree must align with the Master's you are applying for.

What academic qualification do you need?

You need a first qualifying degree — typically a Bachelor's or equivalent — from a recognized university. RWTH checks whether your university is recognized in Germany via the ANABIN database. Most Indian universities (IITs, NITs, central universities and many private universities) are listed and recognized.

Once you submit your application through RWTHonline, the International Office first confirms your formal eligibility. Your application is then forwarded to the relevant Examination Board, which checks whether your Bachelor's coursework matches the Master's program requirements. This review process can take several months.

You do not need to have completed your Bachelor's degree at the time of application. However, you must be able to provide grades for all semesters except your last two.

Language requirements for Master's applicants

RWTH offers Master's programs in both German and English. Your language requirement depends on the medium of instruction of your chosen program.

For English-taught programs, accepted certificates include IELTS and TOEFL. Indian students are not exempt from English language testing — the exemption only applies to students who completed their undergraduate degree in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland or New Zealand. Completing an English-medium degree in India does not qualify for a waiver.

RWTH does not accept TOEFL MyBest Scores. Your required minimum score must be achieved in a single exam sitting.

Requirement Details
Academic Qualification Relevant Bachelor's degree from a recognized university; content must align with chosen Master's
IELTS (English programs) Minimum 6.0 – 6.5 (varies by program)
TOEFL iBT (English programs) Minimum 90 (single sitting; MyBest Scores not accepted)
German (German-taught programs) B2 or C1 level — DSH Stage 2 or TestDaF Level 4
GRE Required for select programs (e.g., Electrical Engineering); recommended for competitive programs
Documents Required Transcript of records (all semesters except last two), module catalog/course descriptions, CV (list format), language certificate; additional documents per program
Application Fee None
Application Portal RWTHonline (online.rwth-aachen.de)

If your documents are not in German or English, you must submit both the original and a certified translation. Submitting only the translation or only the original is not accepted.

Indian student insight (Quora): "I had a CGPA of 8.8/10 and a TOEFL of 112. The SOP must explain why you want that specific course at that specific university — all three should connect. LORs from professors who have completed their PhD carry more weight in the German system." — RWTH Aachen alumnus, M.Sc. Mechanical Engineering

Documents Required for RWTH Aachen Admission: Indian Students Checklist

All documents must be uploaded as PDFs through RWTHonline. No physical documents need to be mailed to the university. RWTH advises strongly against using agencies for your application — the process is free and straightforward, and using an agency can result in loss of access to your own account.

For Bachelor's applicants:

  • University entrance qualification documents (10+2 transcripts and leaving certificate)
  • Tabular CV (resume in list format)
  • Language proficiency certificate (German C1 — DSH Stage 2 or TestDaF Level 4)
  • TestAS result (if grade is below 2.5 or if applying for Medicine/Dentistry)
  • Passport copy
  • Proof of preliminary internship (for applicable programs)

For Master's applicants:

  • Transcript of records (all completed semesters except the last two)
  • Module catalog or course descriptions for all completed courses
  • CV in list format
  • Language proficiency certificate (IELTS/TOEFL for English programs; DSH/TestDaF for German programs)
  • GRE score (if required by the specific program — e.g., Electrical Engineering)
  • Final degree certificate (if already completed)
  • If applying for a higher semester: both Bachelor's and Master's level transcripts

Documents not in German or English must be accompanied by a certified translation. Both the original and the translation must be uploaded — neither alone is sufficient.

Important: RWTH will notify you of missing documents only through the RWTHonline self-service portal. Check your application status regularly — the university does not send email reminders for missing documents.

How Competitive Is RWTH Aachen for Indian Students? Real Profiles and Insights

RWTH Aachen has an acceptance rate of approximately 10%, making it one of the more selective German universities — but Indian students with strong profiles are regularly admitted. The difficulty varies significantly by program. Automotive Engineering, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering are among the most competitive tracks.

Based on Quora and Collegedunia student profiles, here is what admitted Indian students typically had:

Profile Element Typical Range for Admitted Indian Students
Bachelor's CGPA 8.0 – 9.5 / 10 (most admitted students above 8.2)
TOEFL iBT 100 – 117 (minimum 90)
IELTS 6.5 – 8.0 (minimum 6.0)
GRE (where required) 310 – 325 (Quant 160+ recommended)
Work Experience Not mandatory but strengthens profile; internships in relevant field help
Research/Publications Not required but differentiates competitive applicants
Indian student insight (Quora): "I have personally not known anyone in my course with less than an 8.2 CGPA in bachelor's studies — with two exceptions who had exceptional research backgrounds. Good grades don't guarantee a seat, but bad grades ensure you don't have a chance." — Vikrant Srivastava, CAME program, RWTH Aachen (graduated 2017)

The SOP (Statement of Purpose) and LORs carry significant weight. Indian LORs that describe candidates in superlative terms without specifics are often viewed skeptically by German admission committees. A focused SOP that clearly connects your past work to the specific program and research environment at RWTH is more effective than a generic one.
