Concepts Used:

Analgesics

Analgesics are the class of drugs that are used medically by patients to relieve pain without causing a loss of consciousness.

Analgesics, due to their ability to reduce local inflammatory responses, is also known as an anti-inflammatory drug. Anti-inflammatory analgesics are mostly derived from two compounds: salicylic acid and phenacetin.

Various types of analgesics:

  • Non-Narcotic Analgesics do not cause any addiction once consumed. Both Aspirin and Paracetamol belong to this category.
  • Narcotic analgesics on the other hand are capable of inducing sleep and unconsciousness when consumed. Morphin, heroin, and Marijuana all belong to this category of analgesics.

The World Health Organization (WHO) gas described a three-step analgesic ladder in the pharmacologic treatment of pain:

  1. Mild pain – Use acetaminophen, aspirin, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs around the clock.
  2. Moderate pain – If pain persists or increases a mild opioid such as codeine or hydrocodone.
  3. Severe pain – If pain persists or if it is moderate to severe at outset, give a strong opioid or opiate such as morphine, fentanyl, or meperidine. A non-opioid medication may also be continued to assist with pain control or discontinued.

Some of these side effects include:

  • Extra dosage consumption can be fatal.
  • Euphoria
  • dysphoria
  • agitation
  • seizures
  • hallucinations
  • Muscular rigidity
  • Contractions.
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
