  • Students in LMU's Art History major learn the meaning and purpose of the visual art form, its development throughout history, its role in society, and its relationship with other cultural expressions. Through the major, students gain an inherent perception and understanding of art and its visual and symbolic majors. Art History majors learn to comprehend diverse traditional and contemporary artistic traditions within local and global historical, social, religious, and cultural contexts.
  • LMU's Art History program exposes students to diverse artistic traditions, providing a full understanding of the historical, religious, theoretical, and cultural context of works of art and visual culture. Our undergraduates study both the meaning and purpose of the visual arts, their development through history, their role in society, and their relationship with other expressions of culture. Through these studies, our students gain a keen perception and understanding of art and its visual and symbolic language.
  • All students are required to take a three-part introductory sequence, which establishes the groundwork for an understanding of the art of the western world from the prehistoric period until the present. Two classes focusing on non-Western art serve to complement the introductory sequence. Using these classes as a basis, students can then select additional upper-division coursework in their areas of interest from a wide array of class offerings.
  • As a capstone experience, majors take a junior/senior seminar that focuses on methodologies in art history. Students learn research techniques and complete a major paper as a culmination of the course; this advanced writing serves as a preparation for those students who wish to continue their studies in graduate school. In addition to their art history coursework, majors are required to take at least one studio art course and two semesters of a foreign language.
