Shannon Dunn Review at Illinois State University, Normal | Collegedunia

About my university

SD
7.5 /10

ISU is a large school with a small-town feel. Uptown is incredibly safe and comfortable to walk through with charming shops and a lively atmosphere. The quad is beautiful and has every kind of tree native to Illinois. Moreover, at ISU there is something for everyone. It's a very accepting community and I feel very at home here.

Course Curriculum :

I wish it was a bit more in-depth at times as courses often focus on the philosophy of subject matter rather than it's real-world applications. However, I do love how ISU has helped me broaden my horizons and open up to new ideas about history, art, and people in general.

Exams :

I got 1350 on my SAT and a 28 on my ACT (a 33 on reading being my highest score) I have also maintained a 3.8 GPA or above since highschool.

Placement :

Job opportunities are available but often underpaid due to a surplus of students. Graphic Design jobs, in particular, are taken for granted by the local businesses which are rather unfortunate. For someone just looking for experience however, there is plenty to be found.

Internship :

Yes, Design Streak is the Graphic Design internship on campus and I've heard nothing but good things. They work with many organizations on campus as well as local businesses, making it a great resume builder. However, I have not yet applied.

Events :

There are events for everything. If you're stressed before finals there are plenty of events going on as well as giveaways. There are also game nights, tournaments, and guest speakers coming in all the time. The welcome week also features concerts. Last year MAX was the featured artist and it was so much fun.

Fees :

Fees are generally about $1000 a semester with most going towards the athletic department. Other fees help supplement campus improvement, health, and RSO funding. The only place I see not benefiting from the fees are the fine arts which is rather unfortunate.

Scholarship :

Most of the financial aid is automatic when you file your FAFSA. In my experience, ISU is the most generous when it comes to financial aid and is likely the most affordable university in Illinois. I also applied to an art scholarship by entering the annual student art show and won a small award. There were over 30 given that night with many going to my friends.

Examination Structure :

Exams are generally easy if you study and professors are usually good at informing you on its material. I've never failed an exam here but I know some of the Natural Science Gen Eds are pretty difficult.

Faculty :

The professors here genuinely care about your progress and are here to help. Many are very knowledgeable and have cool projects of their own. It's great to have a mentor who has experience in the field. Counsellors are also great but a bit overburdened.

Hostel :

I've only lived in the dorms thus far and for the most part, they are kept clean and I feel very safe here. Manchester/Hewitt is definitely my favourite and tends to have the least issues. My only warning is that off-campus rental companies are often predatory and can sell your property to other companies without consequences.
