Master of Science [MSc] (Artificial Intelligence)
Field of Study:
$37,240 /Yr
University of Surrey Artificial Intelligence MSc is a one-year, full-time campus degree at Stag Hill, Guildford, starting in February 2027. Overseas tuition is £28,000 (INR 35.57 Lakhs), while eligible Indian applicants normally need 55% or 60% depending on their institution.
The course combines machine learning, computer vision, language processing and responsible AI with a 60-credit individual project. It best fits applicants with a relevant technical degree who want both implementation experience and research-informed design skills.
- Institution of Engineering and Technology accreditation supports applicants who value a recognised engineering pathway alongside specialist AI study.
- Specialist computing facilities include graphics processing unit clusters for projects needing substantial computational capacity.
- The standard project can take an engineering design or research direction, allowing applicants to shape evidence for industry or doctoral applications.
Current Admission Status
Applications for the February 2027 intake are Open. International student deadline: 11 December 2026.
Indian applicants requiring a Student visa must meet the later offer-condition and CAS milestones after applying. Surrey publishes no cutoff time, so the portal date and controls govern submission.

Surrey Artificial Intelligence Fees and Living Costs 2027
For the February 2027 full-time route, Surrey confirms overseas tuition of £28,000 (INR 35.57 Lakhs). The fee covers the requested one-year route, while stationery and any optional personal equipment remain separate.
The standard international postgraduate deposit is £3,000 (INR 3.81 Lakhs) toward tuition rather than an additional charge. Surrey charges no application fee for this course, although the offer controls the deposit deadline.
2027 entry context: The target is February full-time study, while the table records other live modes because duration and fee exposure change materially.
| Fee item or route | Official amount | INR equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| February 2027 full-time overseas tuition | £28,000 | INR 35.57 Lakhs |
| February 2027 part-time overseas tuition | £3,200 per 15 credits | INR 4.06 Lakhs per 15 credits |

- The £3,000 deposit (INR 3.81 Lakhs) reduces the later tuition balance, so adding it again would overstate course cost.
- The five-year part-time route charges by completed credits and may face annual fee reviews, preventing a reliable fixed programme total.
- The September placement route costs more and requires students to secure their own placement, making it a distinct risk decision.

Cost of Living in Guildford for AI Students
Surrey publishes weekly planning figures rather than a course-specific living allowance. The table converts those figures into monthly and annual estimates, while insurance, entertainment and society costs remain outside the total.
Campus rent usually includes bills, while private rent generally does not. The conservative range includes Surrey’s published bills minimum, so remove that line when the selected contract covers utilities.
| Expense | Monthly (GBP) | Monthly (INR) | Annual (GBP) | Annual (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rent | £387.83 to £1,352.00 | INR 49,263 to INR 1.72 Lakhs | £4,654 to £16,224 | INR 5.91 Lakhs to INR 20.61 Lakhs |
| Bills when separate | From £130.00 | From INR 16,513 | From £1,560 | From INR 1.98 Lakhs |
| Food | From £173.33 | From INR 22,017 | From £2,080 | From INR 2.64 Lakhs |
| Travel | From £65.00 | From INR 8,256 | From £780 | From INR 99,076 |
| Books and stationery | From £21.67 | From INR 2,752 | From £260 | From INR 33,025 |
| Clothes | From £43.33 | From INR 5,504 | From £520 | From INR 66,050 |
| Television licence | From £17.33 | From INR 2,202 | From £208 | From INR 26,420 |
| Mobile phone | From £21.67 | From INR 2,752 | From £260 | From INR 33,025 |
| Laundry | From £21.67 | From INR 2,752 | From £260 | From INR 33,025 |
| Listed categories total | £881.83 to £1,846.00 | INR 1.12 Lakhs to INR 2.34 Lakhs | £10,582 to £22,152 | INR 13.44 Lakhs to INR 28.14 Lakhs |
The listed categories create a calculated living range of £10,582 to £22,152 (INR 13.44 Lakhs to INR 28.14 Lakhs) for one year. The upper end reflects high rent and separate bills, while the lower end needs checking against the chosen contract.
Adding target tuition produces a calculated core budget of £38,582 to £50,152 (INR 49.01 Lakhs to INR 63.70 Lakhs). This excludes the Student visa, health surcharge, flights, insurance and discretionary spending.
Surrey’s living estimate and the UK visa maintenance requirement answer different questions. Use the first for spending plans and keep the government amount separately available as financial evidence.

Student perspective
One AI student described newer housing as a 10 to 15 minute walk from teaching and flagged Guildford costs. Compare rent inclusions and walking routes in the student reviews before booking.
These comments are anecdotal and do not replace official University of Surrey data.
Key insight: Tuition plus listed living costs creates a calculated £38,582 to £50,152 (INR 49.01 Lakhs to INR 63.70 Lakhs) commitment. Check whether accommodation includes bills before fixing the budget.
Surrey Artificial Intelligence Admission 2027
Admission requires a UK 2:2 honours degree in a listed technical or quantitative subject, or a recognised international equivalent. Surrey maps this threshold to 55% or 60% in an Indian bachelor’s degree, depending on the awarding institution.
Relevant work experience may support applicants below the formal threshold, but the MSc is not a general conversion course. Applicants should demonstrate programming, mathematical reasoning or systems knowledge before committing to advanced machine learning modules.
Academic Eligibility and Course Preparation
Surrey names computing, communications, electronics, information systems, mathematics, physics and telecommunications among the accepted backgrounds. The admissions team makes the final equivalency decision for Indian degrees.
| Requirement | Published standard | Indian applicant action |
|---|---|---|
| Academic qualification | UK 2:2 honours degree or recognised equivalent | Present 55% or 60% overall, depending on the Indian institution |
| Accepted degree areas | Computing, communications, electronics, information systems, mathematics, physics or telecommunications fields | Map prior modules to programming, data, probability and systems foundations |
| Relevant experience | May be considered when formal academic requirements are not met | Quantify technical responsibilities, tools, outputs and project duration |
| Standardised admissions tests | No GMAT or GRE requirement is published | Prioritise academic evidence, references and a course-specific statement |
| Application documents | Qualifications, two referees, personal statement, English evidence and passport as required | Upload signed or stamped records with official translations where needed |
The February intake follows a different teaching sequence because spring semester modules come before the autumn fundamentals block. This structure makes prior programming and machine learning preparation especially important for the target intake.
- Use the statement to connect one technical project with Surrey’s machine learning, computer vision or language-processing curriculum.
- Describe dataset choices, model evaluation and limitations instead of listing programming languages without evidence.
- Review Python, linear algebra and probability before February because applied modules precede the autumn fundamentals sequence.
English Language Requirements
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic requirement is 6.5 overall with 6.0 in writing and 5.5 elsewhere. Surrey also accepts current Pearson, TOEFL and Duolingo routes at the component thresholds below.
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT policy lists both scoring systems. Applicants taking the revised test must use the 1.0 to 6.0 scale without converting an older score.
Current test-scale context: These scores correspond to the course’s exact IELTS profile, and Surrey normally requires test results within two years before entry.
| English evidence | Published score | Validity or use |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall, writing 6.0 and each other element 5.5 | Meet the writing and remaining component thresholds separately |
| Pearson Test of English Academic | 67 overall, writing 64 and each other component 59 | Online PTE Academic is not accepted |
| TOEFL iBT, new system | 4.5 overall with Reading 4, Listening 4, Speaking 4 and Writing 4 | Use for a revised-scale result |
| TOEFL iBT, old system | 88 overall with Reading 18, Listening 17, Speaking 20 and Writing 19 | Use only when the score report uses the older scale |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 overall, Writing 110 and each other component 100 | Share the official result with Surrey |
| India Class XII English route | 70% from CBSE or ISC, or 80% from most state boards | Surrey decides whether the specific board evidence is sufficient |
Indian applicants can use the school-English route when their board and marks satisfy Surrey’s policy. However, excluded boards need an accepted test, while medium-of-instruction evidence remains subject to Surrey’s assessment.
- Choose IELTS when the Class XII board is excluded or Surrey requests recent evidence during assessment.
- Book testing early enough to provide any outstanding result before the 6 January 2027 offer-condition deadline.
- Check the writing threshold separately because a strong overall result cannot compensate for a missed published minimum.
Student perspective
One February-route student found the reversed module sequence demanding for beginners. Two AI reviewers separately valued GPU access, so strengthen fundamentals before using the specialist facilities.
Tip for Indian students: The 55% or 60% threshold establishes eligibility, but February begins with applied modules. Show technical foundations and complete a focused refresher before enrolment.
Surrey Artificial Intelligence Application 2027
The February 2027 overseas application deadline is 11 December 2026 for the target full-time route. September 2027 full-time, placement and part-time applications remain open until 23 July 2027 for students requiring a visa.
Surrey publishes no daily cutoff hour or controlling timezone, so no reliable IST conversion is possible. Submit before the displayed portal date instead of assuming access lasts through midnight in India.
International applicant context: The table lists every published milestone for both live intake months and focuses on students requiring a visa.
| Application stage | February 2027 | September 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Applications opened | 30 June 2026 | 1 October 2026 |
| Overseas application deadline | 11 December 2026 | 23 July 2027 |
| Offer-condition documents deadline | 6 January 2027 | 30 July 2027 |
| CAS application deadline | 8 January 2027 | 20 August 2027 |
| Latest CAS issue date | 15 January 2027 | 1 September 2027 |
| Course start | 8 February 2027 | 20 September 2027 |
| Final registration | 19 February 2027 | No separate date published |
Only 26 calendar days separate the target application deadline and the offer-condition deadline. Applicants waiting for final results should upload available records early and prepare the remaining evidence before submitting.
Surrey publishes no fixed decision date or routine interview for this MSc. The personal statement, technical record and referees must therefore establish programme fit without relying on a later conversation.
Application Steps and Documents
Select Artificial Intelligence MSc, full-time study and February 2027 entry in Surrey’s online form. Complete the fee-status questionnaire because the application is not complete until both submissions are received.
The usual document set covers academic, referee, English and identity evidence. Preparing it before the application deadline protects the short interval to the CAS process.
- Upload signed or stamped degree certificates and transcripts with official English translations when required.
- Provide contact details for two referees who can assess technical ability, academic independence or relevant professional work.
- Use the statement to connect one implemented model with Surrey’s people-centred AI and individual project structure.
- Add accepted English evidence and a passport copy because the full-time route requires Student visa preparation.
Applicants using work experience as an academic exception should document responsibilities, tools, outputs and duration. A task list does not demonstrate readiness for advanced machine learning and independent project assessment.
The statement should also distinguish this technical MSc from Surrey’s Artificial Intelligence Conversion MSc. Evidence of programming and quantitative study supports the intended advanced route.
Application action
Use Surrey’s postgraduate application instructions to verify each portal milestone. Submit available evidence with the form instead of relying on the later condition deadline.
Application tip: Treat 11 December 2026 as the complete-file target and 6 January 2027 as the final evidence milestone. Make technical preparation visible in the statement.
Surrey Artificial Intelligence Scholarships 2027
The main February 2027 competition is the £5,000 International Excellence Award (INR 6.35 Lakhs). Self-funded overseas offer holders must apply before CAS allocation, with applications closing on 8 January 2027.
Applicants can instead use the automatic £2,000 Early payment discount (INR 2.54 Lakhs) by paying their deposit within 10 days of an offer. A separate 20% discount is restricted to eligible Surrey alumni.
February 2027 funding context: Each route has a different trigger and combination rule, so the highest headline value is not automatically the most usable award.
| Award | Published value | Eligibility and route | Deadline or trigger |
|---|---|---|---|
| International Excellence Award | £5,000 fee waiver INR 6.35 Lakhs | Self-funded overseas offer holder on an eligible full-time master’s course | 8 January 2027 and before CAS allocation |
| Early payment discount | £2,000 fee waiver INR 2.54 Lakhs | Self-funded overseas student on an eligible full-time master’s course | Deposit paid through the portal within 10 days of the offer |
| Surrey graduate discount | 20% off tuition | Self-funded student with an undergraduate degree from Surrey’s Guildford campus | University identifies eligible graduates after evidence is available |
The £5,000 award (INR 6.35 Lakhs) is application-based, reviewed monthly and allocated on a first-come basis. It cannot be combined with the alumni or early-payment discounts.
The £2,000 discount (INR 2.54 Lakhs) needs no separate application, but it requires rapid deposit payment. Surrey permits this discount alongside the alumni discount when both eligibility rules are satisfied.
The 20% alumni reduction requires previous undergraduate study at Surrey’s Guildford campus. Indian applicants without that history should exclude it from their funding plan rather than treat it as general support.
- Submit the course application early enough to receive an offer before the 8 January 2027 Excellence Award deadline.
- Choose between the Excellence Award and early-payment route before paying quickly because the fee waivers cannot be combined.
- Keep the gross £28,000 tuition (INR 35.57 Lakhs) funded until Surrey confirms an award in writing.
The GREAT Scholarship for India found on Surrey’s funding pages belongs to September 2026 entry. Excluding that closed cycle prevents an unavailable award from distorting the February 2027 budget.

Funding check
Verify the February 2027 Excellence Award rules after receiving an offer. Allocation must occur before CAS, making funding and visa timing interdependent.
Scholarship reality: The £5,000 award (INR 6.35 Lakhs) offers the largest general reduction, but selection is not guaranteed. Fund gross tuition and protect the pre-CAS deadline.
Surrey Artificial Intelligence Salary 2027
Surrey publishes no AI MSc cohort salary, offer rate or placement rate. A course-specific payback period would therefore require unsupported earnings assumptions and is omitted.
The calculated tuition and listed living commitment is £38,582 to £50,152 (INR 49.01 Lakhs to INR 63.70 Lakhs). That cost must be tested against broader university outcomes, external market salaries and the post-study work window.
ROI for Indian Applicants
Return on investment (ROI) connects verified cost with the evidence available for career decisions. The conclusion remains qualitative because Surrey does not publish an employment report for this MSc cohort.
- The £38,582 to £50,152 (INR 49.01 Lakhs to INR 63.70 Lakhs) core budget requires a loan model that assumes no scholarship.
- The 60-credit individual project can produce demonstrable code and evaluation evidence, so align its topic with a target AI role.
- The university-wide 94% employed or further-study figure is broad context, so never use it as this MSc’s placement probability.
- The 18-month Graduate visa window limits UK search time, so begin portfolio building and sponsorship research during the course.
Surrey identifies AI scientist, AI analyst, entrepreneurship and industry-sponsored doctoral study as possible directions. The course also covers health, sustainability, creative media and finance applications, but none establishes hiring volume.
The standard February route has no placement year. Applicants must therefore use labs, group design work and the individual project to create interview evidence within the one-year schedule.
Evidence scope: The table separates unavailable course outcomes, university-wide outcomes and official UK labour-market benchmarks.
| Evidence scope | Published evidence | INR equivalent or interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Artificial Intelligence MSc cohort | No salary, offer rate or placement rate published | Do not calculate a course-specific payback period |
| All Surrey graduates, latest Graduate Outcomes Survey | 85% in graduate-level employment and 94% employed or studying further | University-wide context, not an AI MSc outcome |
| UK artificial intelligence engineer market benchmark | £35,000 starter to £75,000 experienced | INR 44.46 Lakhs to INR 95.27 Lakhs |
| UK data scientist market benchmark | £32,000 starter to £83,000 experienced | INR 40.65 Lakhs to INR 1.05 Crore |
Source: University of Surrey course and institutional evidence, plus the official UK artificial intelligence engineer profile for external market pay.
The salary ranges span starter to experienced workers and do not represent Surrey graduates. Compare the starter end with debt service before using any UK salary in a funding decision.
Applicants targeting AI engineering should make model development, testing and risk assessment visible in their project. Data-science candidates should document data pipelines, evaluation choices and communication of results.
Take-home pay varies with tax code, pension contributions, location and gross salary. Test a real offer with the UK income tax estimator before setting loan repayments.

Student perspective
One AI student described employment searching as self-driven rather than campus placement. Treat the observation as a reason to build projects and networks, not as an outcome forecast.
ROI reality: Surrey publishes no AI cohort salary, so market ranges cannot prove repayment. Stress-test £38,582 to £50,152 (INR 49.01 Lakhs to INR 63.70 Lakhs) against starter pay and an India-return scenario.
UK Visa for Surrey Artificial Intelligence Students 2027
Indian full-time students need a UK Student visa after Surrey issues the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. The visa fee is £558 (INR 70,877), while the student health surcharge is £776 yearly (INR 98,568). From 30 November 2026, outside-London maintenance evidence is £1,203 monthly (INR 1.53 Lakhs) for nine months, totalling £10,827 (INR 13.75 Lakhs). Degree-level permission can allow 20 weekly work hours during term, subject to individual visa conditions.
- The Graduate visa lasts 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 and costs £937 (INR 1.19 Lakhs), plus £1,035 yearly IHS (INR 1.31 Lakhs).
- The Skilled Worker route generally requires £41,700 yearly (INR 52.97 Lakhs) or the higher occupation rate, so Graduate permission is not sponsorship.
- A qualifying sponsored route can normally lead to settlement after five years, but Graduate visa time does not itself create that route.
- Taught master’s students normally cannot bring dependants, except where government sponsorship or another published exception applies.
Check Out: UK Student visa requirements
Visa reality: Visa maintenance sits outside Surrey’s living estimate, and the Graduate route lasts 18 months. Target sponsored roles early because the usual salary threshold is £41,700 (INR 52.97 Lakhs).
Surrey Artificial Intelligence Ranking 2027
ShanghaiRanking places Surrey 7th in the UK and within the global top 75 for Computer Science and Engineering in its 2025 subject edition. This discipline includes research surrounding AI, but it is not an MSc league table.
Times Higher Education places Surrey joint 10th in the UK and 126 to 150 globally for Computer Science in 2026. Its scope includes artificial intelligence, software, cybersecurity and computing research.
Ranking scope: Both measures evaluate subject-level activity, while neither reports February-intake teaching quality, employment probability or individual project outcomes.
| Ranking | Edition | UK position | Global position | Subject scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects | 2025 | 7th | Top 75 | Computer Science and Engineering |
| Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject | 2026 | Joint 10th | 126 to 150 | Computer Science |
The Shanghai measure is useful for applicants seeking a research-informed project environment. However, the official curriculum and supervisor fit provide stronger evidence for choosing an individual AI topic.
The Times Higher Education band supplies broader computer-science context. Applicants should still inspect machine learning, computer vision and language-processing modules rather than treating a discipline band as programme evidence.
Honest take: The 7th UK Shanghai position supports Surrey’s subject research context, not a placement promise. Use project supervision and module sequence as stronger enrolment tests.
Surrey’s Artificial Intelligence MSc fits technically prepared applicants seeking machine learning depth, responsible AI context and an individual project. The February route accelerates entry but starts with applied modules before the autumn fundamentals sequence. Its material tradeoff is a £38,582 to £50,152 (INR 49.01 Lakhs to INR 63.70 Lakhs) core budget without course-cohort employment statistics. Submit a complete file before 11 December 2026, then resolve scholarship and CAS choices before 8 January 2027.
University of Surrey Artificial Intelligence MSc FAQs
Ques. Who should choose Surrey’s February Artificial Intelligence MSc?
Ans. Choose February when a relevant technical degree and prior programming support immediate applied study. Applicants needing fundamentals first may prefer September or the separate conversion course.

- High living cost in Guildford
- I chose off-campus accommodation. I found them on the university portal, there was no challenge in finding one. There are accommodations near the university building, like Band A or B. These were quite old, They have another set of building 10 mins walk away. These are newer and offer studio room and also ensuite rooms. I went with these, but I had to walk 10 to 15 mins everyday for lectures and labs.
- They also support private companies like Scape for student accommodation. These places are expensive but very modern.
