The past decade has witnessed an explosion in the sophistication of big data platforms, often using web-based intelligence applications, in a range of diverse business situations Ð from the remarketing techniques incorporated into online advertising to personalised medicine practices being used to inform patient treatment.

As the complexity of information systems increases, the skills required by those managing them are becoming highly specialised, yet at the same time more broad-based. Information systems managers not only need to have advanced technical knowledge, but also critical management skills to analyse business needs, solve problems and ensure that the people, processes and practices within a business operate seamlessly.
