No elevation to success - Swansea University

6.8 /10

The university course -BSc Applied Medical Sciences is a fantastic pathway for those looking to go into medical research, enterprise, or study Medicine afterwards. The location is really relaxing with the beach near the university campus and the lecturers and support network is really welcoming and encouraging. I chose Swansea particularly due to the 2nd year Pathways that they provide to study Graduate Entry Medicine.

Course Curriculum :

It is very well structured. In the First Year- core modules are covered such as Human Physiology, Anatomy, Eukaryotic Cell Biology, and Biochemistry. There are multiple assignments to complete, such as essay writing and presentations. The skill developments that arise from such assignments as well as generally with the way that the module is taught, means it fundamentally trains you to be an actual Biomedical Scientist. In the Second year-you have more choices in the modules that you select. The core modules are Human Immunology, and The Cardiovascular System-these are more advanced and have really in-depth knowledge about specific body systems and their pathology as well as their pharmacology used to treat specific conditions. The course module is overall very scientifically relevant. Most lecturers will have links to current scientific studies taking place or scientific studies that have taken place in conjunction with the material that is taught-so you're always up to date! The experience of a biomedical scientist is very present, we have to conduct practicals and write assignments regarding those lab practicals, which develops our skills as a scientist but also as critical thinkers.

Exams :

I didn't take any standardized tests. Simply presented my A-level results which met the minimum expected requirement of BBB-CCC. This is for the foundation year-which is a 'pre-BSc' year before 1st year. It is kind of like an access program for students looking to try and settle into university or for other reasons before fully immersing in their BSc studies.

Placement :

Post-study career prospects are excellent. There are many students who go on to do master, Ph.D., and even Medicine after studying for this degree. There are research opportunities present if one is interested, but that would require a separate application process. However, you will be guided in this application when you start studying.

Internship :

Yes, I have opted in for SPIN placements, which is an undergraduate research opportunity-it is a funded research program. However, as this is separate from the actual degree program, the student will need to provide their own CV and they will be shortlisted from there. There are other internship opportunities present-and more information will be provided, once the student is enrolled in internships, placements and funding.

Events :

There are numerous extracurricular activities you can immerse yourself in. If you're interested in current UK politics (like I am!) then there is different societies and debate clubs for that. There are also different kinds of sports, such as rowing, badminton and also cultural societies, things as Hindu Society, and Sri Lankan Society.

Fees :

Currently it is £9250 for each academic year.

Scholarship :

No Scholarship

Faculty :

The faculty and teaching staff are incredibly supportive. The ways in which they handle students' issues and problems and provide academic support are very immersive. Initially, it was hard to get used to, the scientific rigor that is expected from students, in their written communication, and understanding of the material. However, with time and support, gradually I built up the confidence and ability to write essays and present them scientifically.

Hostel :

So the first year, my accommodation was in student halls, which I personally liked because it was 3 minute walk from campus. However then, I had decided to shift to private accommodation nearer to the City Centre, as that suited me best. The facilities are really accessible, but I personally would recommend, looking closer to the University Campus.
